Amused

Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Perfect Smile

The message on my phone burned brighter than the lights of the entire city.

*“If you tell anyone what happened tonight, I’ll make sure Ethan Carter loses everything.””*

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

Not because Andrew threatened me.

I had heard worse.

I had lived through worse.

But because he knew.

He knew Ethan was the one person who could expose him.

And somehow, that scared him more than anything else.

Ethan picked up my phone from the table, his eyes moving across the screen. The muscles in his jaw tightened with every word.

“Did he send this before or after he hurt you?”” he asked.

I reached for the phone.

“Give it back.””

“Lena.””

“Give it back, Ethan.””

Something in my voice made him stop.

Not anger.

Fear.

He handed it to me immediately.

That was the thing about Ethan Carter.

Everyone in New York knew him as a ruthless billionaire who could walk into a boardroom and make experienced executives nervous with a single look.

But with me, he always listened.

Even when he shouldn't.

Especially when he shouldn't.

I deleted the message.

Ethan watched me do it.

“You just erased evidence.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because evidence doesn’t matter if the person holding it gets destroyed.””

His expression darkened.

“You think Andrew can destroy me?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer came so easily that it surprised even me.

Ethan gave a small, humorless laugh.

“Lena, my company survived a financial collapse, three lawsuits, and a hostile takeover attempt. You think Andrew Vaughn sending threats is going to scare me?””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

I looked toward the door.

Andrew was still waiting outside.

The same man who had smiled at charity events.

The same man who kissed my forehead in front of cameras.

The same man whose name appeared on hospital walls and magazine covers.

The world saw a miracle surgeon.

I saw the man who locked doors behind him.

“He doesn’t need to destroy you directly,” I whispered.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he knows how people work.””

I swallowed.

“Andrew doesn’t attack people where they’re strongest. He finds the thing they love and makes them afraid to lose it.””

Ethan stared at me.

“And what does he think I love?””

My eyes dropped.

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t have to.

Because the silence between us did.

For one dangerous second, neither of us moved.

Then Ethan looked away.

“Lena…”

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t pretend you don’t know.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

His eyebrows pulled together.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

I almost smiled.

That was the cruelest part.

Ethan Carter was brilliant with numbers, negotiations, and business strategies.

But when it came to feelings, he could be completely blind.

For almost a year, I had loved him quietly.

I had memorized the way his face softened when he talked about his mother.

The way he stayed late in his office because he didn't want his employees working alone.

The way he secretly paid medical bills for strangers and refused to take credit.

I had fallen in love with the man nobody else saw.

But Ethan had only ever seen me as his assistant.

His reliable employee.

The woman who organized his life.

Not the woman who had spent countless nights wondering what it would feel like if he looked at me differently.

A loud knock interrupted us.

“Lena.””

Andrew’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Open the door.””

My stomach twisted.

Ethan stepped between me and the entrance.

“No.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Please.””

He looked down at my hand.

“Please what?””

“Not tonight.””

His eyes searched mine.

“Why are you protecting him?””

The question hurt because I didn’t have an answer.

Or maybe I did.

I was protecting everyone.

Except myself.

“Because if this comes out tonight, the entire charity event becomes a disaster,” I said.

Ethan stared at me like he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

“You’re worried about the event?””

“I’m worried about the children’s hospital.””

His expression changed slightly.

That was the one thing he knew about me.

I always put other people first.

Even when I was falling apart.

“The expansion funding,” I whispered.

“The hospital needs it.””

Ethan shook his head slowly.

“Lena, Andrew is the reason you’re afraid. Not the reason you’re responsible.””

I looked away.

Because a small part of me wanted to believe him.

A small part of me wanted someone else to carry the weight for once.

But fear had been my companion for too long.

It knew my name.

It knew my habits.

It knew exactly how to convince me to stay silent.

Another knock.

This time, Andrew sounded irritated.

“Lena, we’re running out of time.””

I closed my eyes.

The memory came instantly.

Andrew standing over me two weeks earlier.

His voice low.

His fingers gripping my wrist.

His smile disappearing the moment no one was watching.

“You know what happens to people who ruin my reputation?””

I opened my eyes.

Ethan was still watching me.

And suddenly, I realized something.

He wasn't asking me to be brave.

He was asking me to stop being alone.

I reached for the door.

Ethan caught my wrist gently.

Not like Andrew.

Never like Andrew.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The honesty surprised us both.

“But I have to.””

Ethan released my hand.

And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes that frightened me.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Determination.

I opened the door.

Andrew stood outside wearing the same perfect tuxedo that would soon appear in every photograph from the gala.

His hair was styled perfectly.

His smile was warm.

Anyone walking by would have thought he was the most loving fiancé in the world.

Then his eyes moved past me.

And landed on Ethan.

The smile disappeared.

Only for half a second.

But I saw it.

Ethan saw it too.

“Mr. Carter,” Andrew said smoothly.

“Dr. Vaughn.””

The two men stared at each other.

The billionaire and the celebrated surgeon.

Two men the city admired.

Two men who understood power.

Andrew recovered first.

“Interesting place to find you.””

Ethan smiled faintly.

“Is it?””

Andrew glanced at me.

Then at my covered arms.

His eyes narrowed.

A silent warning.

I felt my chest tighten.

But Ethan noticed.

Of course he noticed.

“Everything okay, Lena?”” Andrew asked.

There it was.

The performance.

The gentle voice.

The fake concern.

I forced a smile.

“I'm fine.””

Andrew stepped closer.

“You scared me. I thought something happened.””

Ethan’s expression didn't change.

But I knew him well enough to see the anger beneath the surface.

Andrew placed a hand on my shoulder.

I flinched.

Barely.

But Ethan saw.

Andrew saw him see it.

And for a moment, the mask slipped.

His fingers tightened.

Just slightly.

Then he smiled again.

“Are you ready, sweetheart?””

I nodded.

Before I could move, Ethan spoke.

“Dr. Vaughn.””

Andrew turned.

“Yes?””

Ethan’s voice was calm.

Almost polite.

“I think we should talk.””

Andrew smiled.

“I’m afraid I’m about to receive an award.””

“Congratulations.””

“Thank you.””

“But afterward.””

Andrew studied him.

“About what?””

Ethan looked directly into his eyes.

“About why my employee is afraid of you.””

The hallway went silent.

My heart stopped.

Andrew’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Enough for Ethan to know.

Enough for me to know.

The perfect surgeon had finally realized something.

The one person he could never control had just learned the truth.

Andrew stepped closer to Ethan.

“You should be careful what you accuse people of.””

Ethan didn’t move.

“I’m not accusing you.””

A pause.

“I’m investigating.””

Andrew’s smile returned.

But this time, there was nothing warm about it.

“Then investigate carefully.””

He looked at me.

“Because sometimes the person you think you’re saving is the person who destroys you.””

Then he walked away.

Leaving me frozen in the hallway.

Leaving Ethan watching him disappear into the crowd.

May you like

And leaving behind one question that terrified me more than anything else.

Why did Andrew seem so certain that he already knew exactly how Ethan Carter would fall?
