Amused

Chapter 7: The Shadow Beside Me

For several seconds, I couldn’t turn around.

My body refused.

My mind was fighting a battle it couldn’t win.

Because there was only one person standing beside me.

Only one person who had stayed close after my father vanished.

Only one person who had spent years telling me I was safe.

My mother’s brother.

My father’s oldest friend.

The man who had held my hand at the funeral.

The man who had promised me, at thirteen years old, that I would never be alone.

Arthur.

But when I finally turned, he wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at the floor.

Like he already knew.

Like he had been waiting for this moment for twelve years.

“Arthur.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Everyone watched him.

Daniel.

Ethan.

Michael.

Richard.

No one said anything.

Arthur slowly lifted his eyes.

And the pain on his face was worse than anger.

Because anger would have meant he was fighting.

This looked like surrender.

“Tell me it isn’t you.””

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Arthur looked at me.

“Emily…”

“Tell me.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell me my father was wrong.””

Arthur opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence destroyed something inside me.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it was enough.

Daniel stared.

“You knew all this time.””

“Yes.””

“And you let us search for the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Arthur looked at the photograph on the table.

“At first, because Thomas asked me to.””

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel’s expression changed.

“At first?””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?””

Arthur looked at him.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“No.””

Michael stepped closer.

“I know exactly what happened.””

His voice became colder.

“You chose your promise over the people you were supposed to protect.””

Arthur looked away.

And I knew.

Michael was right.

Because my father’s message hadn’t said the person beside me betrayed him.

It said the person beside me knew the truth.

There was a difference.

A terrible difference.

I stepped closer.

“Did you hurt him?””

Arthur looked at me.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I would never hurt Thomas.””

“Then what did you do?””

Arthur’s face tightened.

“I protected the secret.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas believed the truth would put you in danger.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Arthur looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Make it sound like you were protecting me.””

My voice rose.

“You were protecting a lie.””

Arthur accepted the accusation.

Maybe because he knew he deserved it.

“You’re right.””

The room went silent.

I wasn’t prepared for him to admit it.

“I was.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then tell us everything.””

Arthur remained quiet.

Richard stepped forward.

“You owe them that.””

Arthur looked at him.

A strange sadness passed between them.

“You’re the last person who should say that.””

Richard nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, nobody saw Richard as the villain.

Because everyone in that room carried guilt.

Everyone had a piece of the disaster.

Arthur walked toward the table.

He looked at the ledger.

“The night Thomas disappeared, he called me.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You said you weren’t there.””

“I said I didn’t know everything.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

Arthur nodded.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“He asked me to meet him.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he found something.””

“What?””

Arthur took a breath.

“The person behind the company’s financial manipulation.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Michael?””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone went still.

“Then who?””

Arthur looked at me.

And I knew before he spoke.

Because suddenly, everything connected.

The warnings.

The protection.

The constant presence.

The person my father trusted to keep me safe.

“The threat wasn’t outside the family.””

Arthur whispered.

“It was inside.””

I felt sick.

“Who?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

My father’s handwriting.

I stopped breathing.

“You had that?””

Arthur nodded.

“He gave it to me the night he disappeared.””

Daniel stared.

“You had a letter from Dad for twelve years?””

“Yes.””

“And you never gave it to Emily?””

Arthur looked down.

“No.””

“Why?””

Arthur’s voice broke slightly.

“Because Thomas told me not to.””

I grabbed the envelope.

“Why would he write to me and then tell you not to give it to me?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Because the letter wasn’t meant to be opened until you were ready.””

I laughed.

A small, broken sound.

“Ready?””

I held the envelope.

“My father disappeared when I was thirteen.””

My eyes burned.

“When exactly was I supposed to be ready?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

The ink had faded slightly.

But the words were clear.

*Emily,*

My hands trembled.

I had imagined reading my father’s words a thousand times.

I never imagined they would hurt this much.

*If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.*

I swallowed.

*I need you to understand something. I never left because I stopped loving you.*

The room blurred.

I stopped reading for a moment.

Daniel looked away.

Even Ethan looked down.

Because everyone knew how much those words mattered.

I continued.

*The person you trust most may not be the person who protects you. Sometimes the person who protects you is the one who carries the burden of hurting you.*

My eyes moved faster.

*Arthur will make choices you hate. He will hide things from you. He will hurt you. But he is doing what I asked him to do.*

I looked up.

Arthur was watching me.

My heart sank.

Because my father had defended him.

But then I read the next line.

And everything changed.

*However, Arthur is not the only person I asked to protect you.*

I froze.

“What?””

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

*There is one person I trusted above all others. Someone who has been with you since the beginning.*

The page shook in my hand.

*Someone who knows every weakness in our family.*

My breathing became shallow.

Because I understood.

My father wasn’t describing Arthur.

He wasn’t describing Richard.

He was describing someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone who had access to every part of my life.

The next sentence was underlined.

*If Arthur is reading this with you, then he has finally accepted that he cannot protect you forever.*

Arthur lowered his head.

And then came the final line.

The line that made every person in the room go silent.

*Emily, the person who betrayed me is not the person who stood against me.*

My hands went cold.

*It is the person who stood beside you after I was gone.*

I dropped the letter.

Because suddenly, Arthur wasn’t the person beside me.

Not anymore.

The words were clear.

The betrayal came from someone who comforted me.

Someone who stayed.

Someone who helped me survive losing my father.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily…”

But I already knew.

My eyes moved slowly around the room.

Not toward Arthur.

Not toward Richard.

Not toward Michael.

Toward the one person who had been there every day.

The one person who knew my schedule.

My fears.

My memories.

My entire life.

The one person my father had trusted enough to leave me with.

And then I heard the sound.

A small gasp.

A frightened breath.

Coming from behind me.

I turned.

And saw the person I had spent ten years calling family.

Their face had gone pale.

Because they knew the letter wasn’t a warning anymore.

It was an accusation.

“Emily,” they whispered.

I couldn’t move.

“Please.””

My voice barely came out.

“How long?””

They looked at me.

And for the first time in my life…

They looked like a stranger.

“Before I answer that…”

Their eyes moved to the ledger.

“You need to know something.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

They swallowed.

“The reason your father disappeared…”

A pause.

“The reason Arthur, Richard, and Michael all lied…”

Another pause.

“Was because Thomas discovered the truth about me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then they said the name.

May you like

The name that finally explained why my father chose silence over goodbye.

And my entire world broke apart.
