Amused

Chapter 4: The Name We Never Suspected

The name on the page didn’t make sense.

My mind refused to accept it.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time, hoping the letters would somehow become something else.

They didn’t.

The handwriting was my father’s.

The ink was old.

The truth was sitting right in front of us.

And still, every part of me rejected it.

Daniel lowered the ledger slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Arthur.

Especially not Arthur.

Because the name written on that final page belonged to someone we had spent our entire lives trusting.

Someone who had stood beside my father.

Someone who had sat at our family table.

Someone who had comforted us after Thomas disappeared.

Ethan finally whispered it.

“No.””

Just one word.

But it carried years of memories.

Years of loyalty.

Years of denial.

Daniel looked at him.

“You know what this means.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No. It means something else.””

His voice grew louder.

“It has to.””

Arthur stared at the page.

His face had lost all color.

“Thomas…”

He stopped.

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

His eyes moved to me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing power.

Fear of losing someone.

“It’s Michael.””

The room went silent.

Ethan froze.

“My father?””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“No.””

Ethan stepped back.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Michael Vale?””

Arthur didn’t respond.

Ethan grabbed the ledger.

“You’re wrong.””

His hands were shaking.

“My father died twelve years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how could he be the person who betrayed Thomas?””

Arthur looked at him.

“Because your father wasn’t the person Thomas was investigating.””

He pointed to the final page.

“He was the person Thomas thought he could trust.””

The words hit harder than any accusation.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked like someone had taken away the ground beneath him.

“My father loved Thomas.””

Arthur nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Because there was no easy answer.

No explanation that could erase a lifetime of friendship.

Daniel took the ledger from Ethan.

“Start talking.””

Arthur looked at him.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“You knew about this for ten years. You knew my father was afraid. You knew Ethan’s father was involved. And you let us believe Thomas abandoned us.””

Arthur looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel laughed.

“A mistake?””

His voice cracked.

“My father disappeared. My mother spent years wondering if he was alive. Emily spent years believing she wasn’t worth staying for.””

I looked away.

Because that part was true.

No matter how many people told me Thomas loved me, there was always a small part of me that wondered why love wasn’t enough to make him stay.

Daniel continued.

“And you call that a mistake?””

Arthur accepted the anger.

Maybe because he deserved it.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Arthur looked toward the window.

“From the same thing Thomas was trying to protect you from.””

Nobody moved.

“Your father discovered that someone inside Cole Capital was moving money through illegal accounts.””

Daniel looked at the ledger.

“Richard.””

“No.””

Arthur shook his head.

“Richard was greedy. But he wasn’t smart enough to build something like that.””

“Then who was?””

Arthur looked at Ethan.

“Michael.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You keep saying his name like it explains everything.””

Arthur sighed.

“Your father was brilliant.””

Ethan looked away.

“He was loyal.””

“Yes.””

“Then why betray Thomas?””

Arthur’s silence was painful.

“Because someone gave him a reason.””

“What reason?””

Arthur looked at the ledger.

“The same reason people betray the people they love.””

I stared at him.

“Money?””

“No.””

Arthur shook his head.

“Fear.””

The word hung there.

“My father was afraid of what?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Your father.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Thomas?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Arthur nodded.

“I know.””

He walked toward the table.

“Thomas built Cole Capital because he believed people could be better than their circumstances. He trusted loyalty. He trusted friendship.””

Arthur’s voice became quieter.

“But Thomas also had one weakness.””

Daniel asked, “What?””

“He believed he could save everyone.””

The room went still.

Arthur continued.

“When he discovered what was happening inside the company, he didn’t immediately expose anyone.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to understand why.””

I thought of my father.

The man who stayed late at work because he believed every employee had a story.

The man who remembered the names of security guards.

The man who donated millions but still attended local charity meetings himself.

That was always his flaw.

He looked for the good in people.

Even when there was none.

Arthur looked at Ethan.

“Michael had debts.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

“He hid them from everyone.””

Ethan shook his head.

“My father never had money problems.””

Arthur looked at him sadly.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

A painful silence followed.

Ethan’s eyes moved downward.

“My father was always careful.””

“He was.””

“Then why would he risk everything?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Because someone pressured him.””

Arthur nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at the ledger.

“Who?””

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“That’s what Thomas was trying to find out.””

Another notification appeared on Arthur’s phone.

This time, he didn’t need to show us.

His face said enough.

“What now?”” Daniel asked.

Arthur looked at the screen.

“The police are searching my office.””

“For what?””

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Arthur looked at us.

“Thomas’s disappearance.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Arthur put the phone down.

“The files released tonight include information about the night Thomas vanished.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What information?””

Arthur hesitated.

Then he said:

“My fingerprints were found on Thomas’s personal vehicle.””

Nobody spoke.

The accusation was clear.

Arthur Vale wasn’t just being investigated for financial crimes.

He was being connected to my father’s disappearance.

I looked at him.

“Did you hurt him?””

Arthur’s eyes met mine.

And the pain there almost made me look away.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I would never hurt Thomas.””

“But you lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Arthur looked toward the ledger.

“Because Thomas asked me to.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You expect us to believe that?””

“I don’t expect you to believe anything.””

Arthur walked closer.

“I spent ten years carrying the weight of a promise I never should have made.””

“What promise?””

Arthur looked at Ethan.

“Never tell you what happened that night.””

Ethan went still.

“You were there.””

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like a man standing at the edge of a cliff.

Then he finally spoke.

“The night Thomas disappeared, he didn’t leave.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Your father was taken.””

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered:

“By who?””

Arthur looked at the final page of the ledger.

Then at Ethan.

Then at me.

And his answer changed everything.

“By someone who wanted everyone to believe he was gone.””

The lights flickered again.

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

The security officers outside shouted.

Arthur immediately turned.

“What was that?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Your people?””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

The handle moved.

Just like before.

But this time, nobody had a key.

Someone was forcing their way in.

Ethan stepped in front of me.

Daniel grabbed a metal chair.

Arthur stood completely still.

Because he recognized something before any of us did.

The sound.

The rhythm.

The way the person outside knocked.

His face turned pale.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

Arthur whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“That’s impossible.””

The door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came from the other side.

A voice none of us expected to hear.

A voice that belonged to a man who had been dead for twelve years.

“Arthur.””

Nobody moved.

The voice spoke again.

“Open the door.””

Ethan stopped breathing.

Because he knew that voice.

Arthur stepped backward.

And for the first time that night, the powerful chairman of Cole Capital looked completely terrified.

“Michael.””

May you like

The door began to open.

And the dead man who had destroyed our family’s trust was about to walk back into our lives.
