Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Lie

Marcus didn't wait for Detective Harris.

He called Daniel back.

The phone rang six times before going to voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Then a message appeared.

Meet me at Williams Holdings. Alone. If you want the truth about your father, come before midnight.

Olivia read it over his shoulder.

"You're not going.""

Marcus looked at her.

"I have to.""

"No. It's obviously a trap.""

"Maybe.""

"Marcus, Daniel has been lying to you for years.""

"I know.""

"Then why would you meet him?""

Marcus looked toward the photograph.

"Because I want to know what Dad left me.""

Detective Harris stepped closer.

"You're not going anywhere alone. We'll arrange surveillance.""

Marcus nodded.

For once, he wasn't going to make decisions based on emotion.

Not anymore.

Williams Holdings occupied forty-two floors of a glass building in downtown Manhattan.

Marcus had worked there almost every day for fifteen years.

He knew the security guards, the receptionists, the maintenance staff, and the night cleaners.

But when he entered the building shortly before eleven, something felt wrong.

The reception desk was empty.

The security gate was unlocked.

The elevators were already waiting.

Marcus pressed the button for the executive floor.

Detective Harris and two officers were positioned in the lobby. Another team was waiting outside.

The elevator doors closed.

On the thirty-eighth floor, they opened.

Daniel stood beside the conference room.

He was wearing the same charcoal suit Marcus had seen him wear at the house.

His briefcase rested on the table.

"Marcus.""

Marcus stepped out.

"Where's Thomas?""

Daniel glanced toward the windows.

"He isn't here.""

"Then why am I here?""

"Because you deserve the truth.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You've had six years to tell me.""

Daniel nodded.

"I know.""

"Did you help Thomas steal my inheritance?""

Daniel sat down.

"Yes.""

The answer was so simple that Marcus almost lost his balance.

"You admit it?""

"I helped him redirect the funds.""

"Why?""

Daniel folded his hands.

"Your father asked me to.""

Marcus stared.

"What?""

"Richard believed Thomas was going to destroy the company. He wanted to move the assets somewhere Thomas couldn't reach them.""

Marcus frowned.

"Then why did the money go to Vanessa?""

"Because she was supposed to act as a temporary trustee.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That doesn't explain the fake marriage.""

Daniel looked down.

"That was Thomas's idea.""

"And you helped?""

"I didn't create the marriage arrangement. But I knew about it.""

Marcus felt his anger rising.

"Why didn't you stop it?""

Daniel looked exhausted.

"Because I was trying to protect something.""

"What?""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

Inside was a thick folder.

He removed a document and placed it on the table.

"This is the original ownership agreement for Williams Holdings.""

Marcus examined it.

His father's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did Thomas's.

And another signature.

Marcus frowned.

"What's this?""

"Your mother.""

Marcus looked up.

"Mom?""

Daniel nodded.

"Before Eleanor died, she held fifty-one percent of the company through a family trust.""

Marcus stared.

"That's impossible. Dad owned the company.""

"Your father managed it. He didn't own all of it.""

Daniel continued.

"After her death, Thomas and Richard transferred the shares into a holding structure. Richard eventually discovered that Thomas had falsified several documents to gain control.""

Marcus looked at the agreement again.

"Who owns the company now?""

Daniel removed another page.

"You do.""

Marcus looked up.

"What?""

"Your mother transferred her controlling shares to you before she died. The documents were sealed until your twenty-fifth birthday.""

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

"I'm forty.""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father knew. But he was afraid Thomas would challenge the transfer.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because the original documents disappeared.""

Marcus stared at the table.

"So all these years, I thought I was building a company my father left me.""

Daniel nodded.

"But it was partly your mother's company from the beginning.""

Marcus felt something shift inside him.

His mother's company.

Her legacy.

The money she'd worked for.

The business she'd wanted to protect.

And someone had spent years trying to erase her from it.

"Where are the original share certificates?""

Daniel pointed toward the folder.

"One copy is here. The originals are with Thomas.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because Thomas was planning to use them to transfer control to a private investment group.""

Marcus frowned.

"Which group?""

Daniel placed another document on the table.

The name was unfamiliar.

*Northbridge Global Partners.*

Marcus recognized the company logo.

He had seen it in business news.

Northbridge had been attempting to acquire several major American companies.

Including Williams Holdings.

Marcus looked up.

"Thomas was selling my company?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

Marcus stood.

"You're telling me my uncle is selling a company he doesn't own?""

Daniel nodded.

"And the buyers believe they have legal authority to complete the transaction.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Why?""

Daniel removed the final document.

"Because someone filed a revised ownership agreement six months ago.""

Marcus read the page.

His own name appeared.

His signature appeared beneath it.

But he had never signed it.

Again.

Another forgery.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"How many times has someone used my signature?""

Daniel sighed.

"At least seven.""

Marcus felt sick.

"Seven?""

"Possibly more.""

He leaned against the table.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Because Thomas has become dangerous. He knows the original documents are missing, and he believes I have them.""

Marcus studied him.

"Do you?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus reached for the folder.

Daniel quickly placed his hand over it.

"Not yet.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Move your hand.""

Daniel shook his head.

"There's one more thing you need to know.""

Marcus's patience snapped.

"Enough secrets!""

Daniel stood.

"Your father didn't die because Thomas withheld his medication.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

"Thomas tried to force him to sign the revised will. But Richard had already been given medication by the hospital staff.""

Marcus stared.

"Then what happened?""

Daniel looked toward the conference room door.

"Your father suffered a cardiac event. Thomas was there. He didn't call for help immediately.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"Why?""

"Because he was trying to get the documents.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"By the time the nurse arrived, it was too late.""

Marcus looked away.

His father had died while someone searched his belongings.

He gripped the table.

"Did you know?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Marcus stared at him.

"And you said nothing.""

"I was afraid.""

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"Everyone was afraid. Nobody was afraid enough to tell the truth.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I deserve that.""

Marcus looked at the folder.

"Give me the documents.""

Daniel slowly removed his hand.

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were the original share certificates, the original trust agreement, and a sealed envelope.

The envelope had his name written across it.

His father's handwriting.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

He opened it.

My son,

If you are reading this, I have failed to protect you from the people I trusted.

I spent too many years believing that keeping the family together was more important than telling the truth.

I was wrong.

Marcus stopped.

His eyes burned.

He continued.

Your mother built the foundation of this company. I helped expand it, but she was the reason it existed.

I allowed Thomas to take control because I believed I could eventually repair the damage.

I also allowed Vanessa into our family because I believed she loved you.

Marcus's hands trembled.

I was wrong about both.

He swallowed.

There is one final document in this envelope. It explains why Thomas wanted the company so desperately.

Marcus removed a folded sheet.

It was a medical report.

His father's name appeared at the top.

Below it was a diagnosis.

*ADVANCED CARDIAC DISEASE — TERMINAL.*

The report was dated eight months before Richard died.

Marcus stared.

His father had known he was dying.

He turned the page.

There was a second medical report.

This one belonged to Thomas.

Marcus frowned.

Then he read the diagnosis.

*CHRONIC NEUROLOGICAL CONDITION — PROGRESSIVE COGNITIVE DECLINE.*

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Why does Thomas have a medical report in Dad's envelope?""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Because your father wanted you to understand something.""

"What?""

"Thomas was not the person making all the decisions during the final year.""

Marcus looked down.

"Who was?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then a voice came from behind him.

"I was.""

Marcus spun around.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

She was no longer wearing the gray sweater from the police station.

Her hair was perfectly styled, and she carried a black handbag.

Marcus stared.

"How did you get out?""

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"I was never formally charged. My attorney arranged my release pending further investigation.""

Marcus looked at Detective Harris's empty position.

He suddenly realized the officers were no longer outside the conference room.

"Where are the police?""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Busy.""

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Marcus, I didn't know she was coming.""

Vanessa walked into the room.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

"You've been looking in the wrong direction this entire time.""

Marcus stared.

"What do you want?""

"The company.""

He laughed.

"You don't own a single share.""

Vanessa opened the envelope.

Inside was another legal document.

It contained a clause from the original family trust.

Marcus read it.

Then read it again.

His face went pale.

The document stated that if Richard Williams died without transferring the company shares to his designated successor, control would pass to his surviving spouse.

Marcus looked up.

His father had been married to Eleanor.

Eleanor had died first.

But the clause had been amended.

The amendment listed Vanessa as the surviving spouse of Marcus Williams.

And if the marriage certificate was accepted as valid, she could claim control of the company through a secondary beneficiary arrangement.

Marcus stared at her.

"That's why you arranged the fake marriage.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Exactly.""

"You were trying to become my legal spouse on paper so you could claim the company?""

"Not just the company.""

She smiled.

"Everything.""

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

"You knew?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I never saw this amendment.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Of course you didn't. Robert prepared it privately.""

Marcus felt the pieces coming together.

The fake marriage.

The missing inheritance.

The altered will.

The property sale.

The forged signatures.

It had all been designed to place Vanessa in control.

But one question remained.

"Why Derek?""

Vanessa's smile faded.

"Because he was supposed to handle the property transfer.""

"And the affair?""

She shrugged.

"That was personal.""

Marcus stared.

"You destroyed our marriage for money?""

Vanessa looked almost offended.

"Marcus, our marriage was already over.""

"No. You ended it.""

She leaned forward.

"You think you were the only person making sacrifices? I spent years pretending to be happy while you built your company and ignored me.""

Marcus shook his head.

"You had access to everything.""

"Not everything.""

Her eyes hardened.

"I wanted control.""

She pointed toward the documents.

"And now I have it.""

Before Marcus could respond, the conference room door opened.

Detective Harris entered with two officers.

"Vanessa Williams, you're under arrest.""

Her smile disappeared.

"What?""

Harris stepped forward.

"We have a warrant based on the forged ownership documents and evidence recovered from Mr. Miller.""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then the door.

She suddenly grabbed the envelope and threw its contents into the air.

Papers scattered across the conference table.

"YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE DOING!""

The officers seized her arms.

She struggled.

"Marcus! Tell them! You know I was doing this for us!""

Marcus watched without moving.

Vanessa was dragged toward the door.

Then she turned her head.

"There's something your father never told you!""

Marcus stared.

She smiled through her tears.

"Your mother had another child.""

Everything stopped.

Marcus felt his heart pound.

"What?""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"That's the real reason your father hid the original will.""

The officers pulled her away.

But her final words remained in the room.

"Your mother's first child is alive, Marcus.""

He stood motionless.

Olivia appeared in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

And when Marcus turned toward her, she was already crying.

"Olivia?""

She shook her head.

"Marcus...""

He stepped toward her.

"Did you know?""

Olivia nodded.

"Yes.""

His voice broke.

"Who is my mother's other child?""

Olivia reached into her handbag and removed a photograph.

It showed a young man standing beside Eleanor Williams.

He had Marcus's eyes.

His father's jaw.

And the same unmistakable smile.

May you like

On the back, written in Richard's handwriting, were four words:

*My son. Your brother.*
