Amused

Chapter 3: My Sister's Confession

Marcus couldn't speak.

His younger sister stood less than six feet away, wearing the same silver necklace their father had given her on her twenty-first birthday.

The necklace he had helped her choose.

The necklace she'd worn to their father's funeral.

Now she was telling him she'd been involved in stealing his inheritance.

"Say that again," Marcus whispered.

Olivia swallowed.

"I was involved.""

"With Vanessa?""

She nodded.

"And Robert Hayes.""

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

The attorney's face had become unreadable.

Vanessa stepped away from the staircase.

"Olivia, don't.""

Olivia laughed bitterly.

"Don't what? Tell him the truth?""

"You don't know what you're doing.""

"I've known exactly what I've been doing for six years.""

Marcus stared at his sister.

"Why?""

Olivia looked down at her hands.

For a moment, she seemed twenty-four again.

The young woman who had called him crying after her first breakup. The girl who had once slept on his bedroom floor during a thunderstorm because she was afraid of lightning.

He remembered promising their father that he would always look after her.

"Why, Olivia?""

She raised her eyes.

"Because I thought Dad had left me nothing.""

Marcus frowned.

"What?""

"He left you the company. The estate. The investments.

Everything. I got a small apartment and a monthly allowance.""

"That wasn't true.""

"I know that now.""

"You were given a trust.""

"A trust I couldn't access without your approval.""

Marcus stared at her.

Their father had created a separate education and support fund for Olivia. Marcus remembered reviewing it with Daniel years earlier.

It had been designed to give her financial independence without exposing her to unnecessary risk.

He had assumed she understood.

"You had money," he said.

Olivia shook her head.

"I had restrictions. I wanted more.""

"So you stole from me?""

Her eyes filled.

"I didn't think it would hurt you.""

Marcus took a step back.

"That might be the most insulting thing you've ever said to me.""

Olivia wiped her cheeks.

"After Dad died, Vanessa came to me. She told me he'd been worried about you. She said he had changed his will because he didn't think you were responsible enough to manage everything.""

Marcus looked at his wife.

Vanessa didn't deny it.

Olivia continued.

"She said Robert could help us move some money into accounts that would be protected from your business creditors.""

Marcus frowned.

"Business creditors? I didn't have any.""

"I know.""

"Then why would you believe that?""

Olivia looked away.

"Because Vanessa showed me documents.""

"What documents?""

"Letters. Financial statements. A note that supposedly came from Dad.""

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

"Did you ever verify them?""

Olivia shook her head.

"No.""

"Did you ever call Daniel?""

"No.""

"Did you ever ask me?""

She started crying.

"No.""

Marcus stared at her.

"You trusted my wife more than your own brother.""

Olivia's shoulders shook.

"I was angry.""

"About what?""

"Everything!""

Her voice echoed through the room.

She took a breath.

"Do you know what it was like growing up as your little sister? Dad talked about you constantly. Your grades.

Your company. Your achievements. Every time I did something, he asked what you thought about it.""

Marcus looked stunned.

"That's what this is about?""

"No. It's about how I felt.""

"So you stole my inheritance because you felt overlooked?""

Olivia pressed her lips together.

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds exactly like what you did.""

She reached into her envelope and removed a photograph.

It showed Olivia, Vanessa, and a man Marcus recognized from his father's company records.

Robert Hayes.

They were standing outside a restaurant.

The date printed on the back was March 14.

The same date from the mysterious message.

Marcus stared at it.

"Where did you get this?""

"From Robert's old office.""

"How?""

Olivia hesitated.

"After he died, his widow gave me some of his personal belongings.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Did you know?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Olivia removed another item.

A folded letter.

"This was inside his desk.""

Marcus opened it.

The handwriting was his father's.

He recognized it immediately.

To my children,

If something happens to me before I can explain the changes to the estate, I want you both to know that I have made arrangements to protect you.

Marcus, you have worked hard for everything you have built. I trust you to continue building it.

Olivia, your future matters just as much. Never believe that I love you less because I have chosen a different way to protect your inheritance.

Marcus stopped reading.

He looked at his sister.

"Where did you get this?""

"Robert's widow.""

"Why didn't you give it to me?""

Olivia lowered her head.

"Because by then, the money was gone.""

Marcus placed the letter on the table.

"What does that mean?""

Olivia looked at Vanessa.

"Tell him.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Olivia, don't.""

"Tell him what you did with the money.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You're the one who agreed to everything.""

"And you're the one who kept taking more!""

Marcus stepped between them.

"Enough. Both of you.""

He turned toward Vanessa.

"Where did the money go?""

She folded her arms.

"I didn't steal four million dollars.""

"Then where is it?""

"Some of it went into investments.""

"What investments?""

She didn't answer.

"Some went to Ethan," Olivia said.

Vanessa snapped her head toward her.

"Shut up!""

Olivia continued.

"And some went to Derek.""

Marcus went still.

The bedroom intruder.

The man who had been hiding in his closet.

Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.

"Derek?""

She looked away.

"He's not important.""

"How much?""

"Marcus...""

"How much money did you give him?""

Vanessa's silence stretched.

Daniel opened his folder.

"We found three transfers to an account associated with Derek Miller. The total is approximately $280,000.""

Marcus stared.

"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars?""

Olivia nodded.

"He said he needed money to start a construction business.""

Marcus almost smiled.

"Construction?""

"That's what he told Vanessa.""

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

The closet.

The excuses.

The strange pants.

"Was he actually in our house to fix something?""

Olivia looked at him.

Then she let out a small, exhausted laugh.

"No.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Of course not.""

"He was there to get the last set of documents.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"What documents?""

Olivia reached into the envelope and removed a photograph of a small metal safe.

It was sitting inside a room Marcus didn't recognize.

"These.""

She handed him a second photograph.

A close-up showed several folders inside the safe.

On one folder, written in black marker, were the words:

*WILLIAMS TRUST — ORIGINAL SIGNATURES.*

Marcus looked up.

"Where is this?""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Olivia, you promised.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"What did she promise?""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"Nothing.""

Olivia shook her head.

"I promised I wouldn't tell him until I had proof.""

"Proof of what?""

Olivia took a deep breath.

"That the transfer wasn't the only thing they falsified.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"What do you mean?""

Olivia placed another document on the table.

It was a copy of a legal authorization.

Marcus recognized his own signature.

Or what was supposed to be his own signature.

He frowned.

"I never signed this.""

Daniel examined the page.

His face changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"From Derek's apartment.""

Marcus stared.

"Why were you in Derek's apartment?""

Olivia hesitated.

"Because I was trying to get the documents back.""

Vanessa laughed sharply.

"Don't pretend you suddenly became innocent.""

Olivia turned on her.

"I'm not innocent! I know what I did!""

"Then stop acting like you're the victim!""

Marcus raised his voice.

"Both of you, stop!""

The room fell silent.

He looked at the forged authorization.

It gave someone permission to sell a property belonging to the estate.

A property he hadn't known existed.

"What property?""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Your father's lake house.""

Marcus's head snapped up.

"The house in Connecticut?""

"Yes.""

"That property was never part of the inheritance.""

"According to the original trust, it was.""

Marcus stared at him.

"How much is it worth?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Approximately two million dollars.""

Marcus felt the room closing in.

Four million dollars had disappeared.

Now there was another two-million-dollar property involved.

And someone had forged his signature to sell it.

"Was it sold?""

Daniel examined the document.

"Not yet.""

Marcus exhaled.

"Thank God.""

"But there's a complication.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Of course there is.""

Daniel turned the page.

"The property is scheduled to transfer ownership tomorrow morning.""

"To whom?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he placed the final page in front of Marcus.

The buyer's name was printed clearly.

*DEREK MILLER.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She was crying again.

But this time, he didn't see shame in her expression.

He saw panic.

"Why is Derek buying my father's house?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I can explain.""

Marcus pointed at the document.

"Then explain.""

She looked at Olivia.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, she looked directly at Marcus.

"Derek isn't just my boyfriend.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"Then what is he?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He's the person who helped me move the money.""

Marcus stared at her.

"That much I gathered.""

She shook her head.

"No. You don't understand. Derek has been handling the estate for years.

Robert introduced us. He was supposed to keep everything safe until the right time.""

"Right time for what?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"Until the property could be sold without anyone questioning the transfer.""

Marcus looked at the papers.

Then back at her.

"You're telling me the man I found hiding in my closet was involved in stealing my father's estate?""

Vanessa nodded faintly.

"And the bedroom?""

She closed her eyes.

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

Marcus let out a cold laugh.

"Apparently, neither was getting caught.""

Daniel gathered the documents.

"Marcus, we need to contact the authorities and request an emergency injunction before the property transfer.""

"Do it.""

"Immediately?""

"Right now.""

Daniel picked up his phone.

Olivia stepped closer.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

He looked at her.

"What now?""

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small silver key.

"I found this in Robert's desk.""

Marcus frowned.

"What does it open?""

Olivia glanced at Vanessa.

"The safe in your father's old study.""

Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.

His father's study had remained untouched since his death.

He'd kept it locked because he couldn't bring himself to change anything.

Not the books.

Not the photographs.

Not even the coffee cup Richard had left beside his desk.

Marcus stared at the key.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""

Olivia's voice broke.

"Because I was afraid of what you'd find.""

"What's inside?""

She looked at him.

"An original copy of Dad's final will.""

Marcus frowned.

"Daniel already has the will.""

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

"Yes. I do.""

Olivia shook her head.

"Not the one I'm talking about.""

Marcus looked between them.

"What do you mean?""

Olivia took a shaky breath.

"The will Daniel has was signed six months before Dad died.""

Daniel's face went pale.

Marcus turned toward him.

"And the original?""

Olivia placed the key in Marcus's palm.

"It was signed two weeks before he died.""

The room fell silent.

Then Olivia whispered the words that changed everything.

"Marcus, Dad didn't leave you four million dollars.""

She paused.

"He left you everything.""

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the key.

"Give me that!""

Marcus stepped back.

Daniel grabbed her wrist before she could reach him.

"Mrs. Williams, don't.""

Vanessa struggled.

"You don't understand! If he opens that safe, everything is over!""

Marcus stared at her.

And for the first time that night, he realized something.

His wife wasn't afraid of losing him.

She was afraid of what his father had left behind.

His phone vibrated.

An incoming call.

Unknown number.

Marcus answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through, low and hurried.

"Mr. Williams? This is Detective Harris with the financial crimes unit.""

Marcus straightened.

"Yes?""

"We need you to come to our office immediately.""

"Why?""

There was a pause.

Then the detective said:

"We've just arrested Derek Miller.""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She had stopped struggling.

Her face was completely white.

The detective continued.

"And during the arrest, we recovered a document with your signature.""

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

"What document?""

"A marriage certificate.""

Marcus frowned.

"Whose marriage certificate?""

The detective lowered his voice.

"Yours, Mr. Williams.""

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

"That's impossible. I'm married to Vanessa.""

"That's exactly why we need you here.""

The detective paused.

"According to the document we recovered, you legally married another woman four years ago.""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at him.

May you like

And then, very quietly, she whispered:

"Marcus... I can explain that, too.""
