Chapter 5: My Father's Forged Signature
Dad read the document three more times.
Each time, his expression grew more severe.
The filing appeared to transfer an interest in the house to Bennett Family Holdings LLC, the company Vanessa had created. The paperwork bore Dad's name, his address, and what appeared to be his signature.
But he hadn't signed it.
I stood beside him, trying to understand how someone could use his identity to move property without his knowledge.
"Could it be a mistake?"" I asked.
Dad shook his head.
"The signature is supposed to be mine. If I didn't sign it, we need to find out who submitted it and what supporting documents they used.""
Marcus sank into an armchair.
"Mom wouldn't forge your signature.""
Neither Dad nor I answered.
Marcus looked from one of us to the other.
"She wouldn't, right?""
Dad put the phone down.
"Marcus, I hope there's an innocent explanation. But hoping doesn't make it true.""
"She's my mother.""
"And Sophie is my daughter. That didn't stop her from taking Sophie's money.""
Marcus's face crumpled.
He stared at the carpet, twisting his hands together.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Dad walked toward the kitchen, then stopped and turned back.
"Where is Vanessa?""
Marcus glanced upstairs.
"In her room, I think.""
"Go get her.""
Marcus hesitated.
"What am I supposed to say?""
"Tell her we need to discuss the property filing.""
Marcus climbed the stairs.
I heard him knock.
Then his voice.
"Mom? Dad needs you downstairs.""
A muffled reply followed.
"What does he want now?""
"He found a document.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"What document?""
Marcus answered too quietly for me to hear.
A door opened.
Footsteps crossed the landing.
Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs wearing a fresh blouse, her hair brushed, and her makeup carefully repaired.
She had transformed herself in less than ten minutes.
She no longer looked like a woman who had been caught.
She looked like someone preparing to make a case.
"What is this about?"" she asked.
Dad held up his phone.
"The property filing.""
Her face remained composed.
"What about it?""
"Did you submit this document?""
She glanced at the screen.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"It bears my signature.""
"Then you must have signed it.""
"I didn't.""
"Maybe you forgot.""
Dad took one step toward her.
"I don't forget signing legal documents that transfer property.""
Vanessa descended the stairs with deliberate calm.
"Daniel, you've been under a tremendous amount of stress today. You're jumping to conclusions.""
"Did you file this document?""
She folded her arms.
"I handled some administrative paperwork for the company.""
"That isn't an answer.""
"I didn't forge anything.""
"Then why does the filing contain a signature I didn't authorize?""
She looked at the screen again.
"Maybe the attorney used an old signature on file.""
Dad stared at her.
"Which attorney?""
Vanessa hesitated.
He noticed.
"Name him.""
"I don't remember.""
"You don't remember the name of the attorney who supposedly prepared a document transferring our house?""
"Our house isn't being transferred.""
"Then explain the filing.""
She drew a slow breath.
"You're making a mistake by assuming the worst.""
Dad's voice rose.
"Stop telling me what I'm assuming and start telling me what you did!""
Vanessa's composure cracked.
"I was trying to protect our family!""
"From what?""
"Financial disaster!""
The words echoed through the living room.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Vanessa pressed her hands against her face.
"The debts were getting worse. My mother needed help. Marcus needed stability. I thought if I could consolidate everything, we could start over.""
Dad stared at her.
"You thought transferring the house to your company would solve your debts?""
"I thought I could refinance it.""
"Without telling me?""
"You would have said no!""
"Because it's not your property to transfer!""
Vanessa looked toward Marcus.
"Please tell him I was trying to do the right thing.""
Marcus didn't move.
"Mom, I don't know what the right thing was anymore.""
She stared at him in disbelief.
"After everything I've done for you?""
He flinched.
"That's exactly what you keep saying. Everything is always about what you've done for me. But you never asked whether I wanted a car that cost my sister her future.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"You loved that car.""
"I did.""
"Then why are you turning against me?""
Marcus looked down.
"Because I think you stole from Sophie.""
The room fell silent.
Vanessa seemed to shrink.
For the first time, her own son had said the word she had spent the entire afternoon avoiding.
Dad put his phone on the table.
"Here's what happens now. Tomorrow, the attorney will examine the property documents. We'll contact the bank and request a full review of the transactions. Nobody touches that company account until we know what it contains.""
Vanessa's expression turned hostile.
"You can't freeze my account.""
"We aren't freezing anything ourselves. We're getting legal advice and reporting suspected unauthorized transactions.""
"You would destroy me over a misunderstanding?""
Dad looked at her for a long moment.
"You keep calling this a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding is when someone takes the wrong package from the porch. This is a pattern of financial decisions made in secret.""
Vanessa's chin trembled.
"You don't understand how much pressure I've been under.""
Dad answered quietly.
"Then you should have asked for help.""
She looked at me.
"And what would Sophie have done? She would have complained about every penny. She thinks the world owes her something because she worked a few shifts at a grocery store.""
I felt my face grow hot.
Dad immediately stepped forward.
"Enough.""
Vanessa continued.
"She has no idea what it takes to maintain a household. She doesn't pay the mortgage. She doesn't manage the bills. She doesn't know what it means to keep a family afloat.""
I stared at her.
"You could have asked me to help. You could have explained that you were in trouble. You could have told me the truth.""
"And what would you have done?""
"I would have protected my money!""
Her mouth snapped shut.
I continued, my voice shaking.
"Because it's mine. Because I earned it. Because college is the one thing I've spent years working toward, and you decided that your problems were more important than my future.""
Vanessa looked away.
Dad picked up his phone.
"I'm calling the attorney again.""
This time, he didn't leave the room.
He put the call on speaker and explained what he had found. The attorney, a man named Robert Hayes, listened without interrupting.
When Dad finished, Robert asked a series of questions about the property's ownership, the company, and the suspicious signature.
Then he said something that made Dad sit down.
"Daniel, do not confront Vanessa about any additional documents until we know what was filed. I want copies of everything. And I need you to understand that if your signature was forged, this may be more serious than a marital financial dispute.""
Vanessa stared at the phone.
Robert continued.
"Has anyone contacted you about selling the property?""
"No," Dad answered.
"Has anyone asked you to sign a refinancing agreement, deed, or loan guarantee recently?""
"No.""
"Did you authorize Vanessa to act on your behalf with a lender?""
"No.""
There was a brief pause.
"All right. I'll start with the public property records and the documents filed under Bennett Family Holdings. I'll also advise you on notifying the relevant institutions that the signature is disputed.""
Dad thanked him and ended the call.
Vanessa immediately stood.
"I'm going to bed.""
"No," Dad said.
She turned sharply.
"What?""
"We need to know whether you've got copies of the property documents.""
"I've told you everything I know.""
"No, you haven't.""
"You cannot keep interrogating me!""
Dad pointed toward the stairs.
"Go get every document relating to Bennett Family Holdings. Bring it down here.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she laughed.
A short, bitter sound.
"You really think you can order me around because you're angry?""
"No. I'm asking you to cooperate with an investigation into what you've done.""
"An investigation?""
"Yes.""
Her face changed.
"You're actually going to report me?""
Dad's voice became quieter.
"If the records show that you stole money or forged my signature, I will take whatever lawful steps are necessary to protect my daughter and my property.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel, I love you.""
He looked at her without moving.
"Then why did you do this?""
She had no answer.
She turned and climbed the stairs.
A few minutes later, we heard drawers opening and closing upstairs.
Dad sat on the couch, his elbows resting on his knees.
I sat beside him.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then I whispered, "Did you know she was in debt?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Did you know she had a company?""
"No.""
"Did you know she was trying to transfer the house?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"No, sweetheart. I swear to you, I didn't know.""
I looked at his hands.
They were trembling.
I had been so angry with him earlier that I hadn't fully considered what this meant for him.
Vanessa hadn't simply taken my money.
She had built a secret financial life inside the home where we all lived.
She had hidden it from the man she married, the girl whose savings she emptied, and even the son she claimed to be protecting.
"Dad?""
He looked at me.
"I'm sorry I didn't check the account sooner.""
I swallowed.
"I know.""
"I should have moved it into your name when you turned eighteen. I should have checked every statement. I trusted her to respect what belonged to you.""
His voice broke.
"I thought I was keeping our family together.""
I leaned against his shoulder.
For the first time that day, I let myself cry without trying to hide it.
He wrapped his arms around me.
"I will help you get your money back," he whispered.
"I can't promise it will be easy, and I can't promise we can recover every dollar immediately. But I will do everything I can.""
I closed my eyes.
"That's all I need you to do.""
We stayed that way until Marcus returned from upstairs.
He was holding a folded piece of paper.
"Dad?""
Daniel released me and looked up.
"What is it?""
Marcus approached slowly.
"I found this in Mom's desk. It's a copy of the document she made me sign.""
Dad took the paper.
The top half appeared to be a routine vehicle delivery acknowledgment. It listed the sports car's make, model, vehicle identification number, and purchase price.
But the lower half contained several paragraphs of dense legal language.
Dad read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
"What does it say?"" I asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
He took out his phone and photographed the document, then sent it to Robert.
Marcus shifted nervously.
"Is it bad?""
Dad looked at him.
"Did your mother explain any of this to you?""
"No. She said it was just a form for the dealership.""
Dad pointed to a paragraph halfway down the page.
"This document doesn't just acknowledge receipt of the vehicle. It appears to contain language about accepting responsibility for certain obligations connected to the purchase.""
Marcus's face went pale.
"What obligations?""
"I don't know yet. Robert needs to review it.""
Marcus grabbed the back of a chair.
"I didn't agree to pay for a car I didn't buy!""
Dad held up a hand.
"Calm down. We aren't making assumptions. We'll find out what you signed and whether it's enforceable.""
Marcus stared at the document.
Then he whispered, "Mom told me it was a gift.""
I looked at him.
"Maybe it was. But why would a gift need all this paperwork?""
He didn't answer.
Dad's phone vibrated.
Robert had replied.
The message contained only one sentence:
*Do not sign or transfer anything else. I need to speak with you immediately.*
Dad called him back.
I could hear Robert's voice through the speaker, urgent and precise.
"Daniel, I've located the property filing. The document you sent appears to be part of a larger transaction. There is a loan application associated with Bennett Family Holdings, and your name appears in the supporting records.""
Dad went still.
"What kind of loan?""
"A secured loan connected to the property.""
"How much?""
Robert paused.
"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
Dad closed his eyes.
The exact amount scheduled to leave the company account on Monday.
Robert continued.
"The lender's records indicate that the funds were advanced against the property, with a payment arrangement due to be finalized at the beginning of next week.""
Dad looked at me.
"Did Vanessa tell you anything about a loan?""
"No," I whispered.
He turned back to the phone.
"Robert, I never applied for this loan. I never authorized it.""
"Then we need to establish how your information and signature were used. I want you to send me every document you have, including the vehicle agreement Marcus signed.""
Dad looked at the paper in his hand.
"Do you think the car is connected?""
"I can't say yet. But the timing is concerning.""
After the call ended, Dad sat motionless.
Marcus began pacing.
I looked toward the staircase.
Vanessa had gone quiet upstairs.
Too quiet.
Then my phone buzzed.
An unfamiliar number had sent me a message.
*Sophie, this is Patricia. Vanessa's mother. I need to talk to you before Monday. Your stepmother hasn't told you the truth about where your money went.*
I read the message twice.
Then another arrived.
*And if Daniel discovers what she did with the house, someone could lose far more than $85,000.*
I raised my eyes to Dad.
He saw my expression.
"What is it?""
I turned the screen toward him.
He read the messages.
Then he looked toward the ceiling, where Vanessa's bedroom was directly above us.
"Call her," he said.
My fingers trembled as I pressed the number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then Patricia answered in a whisper.
"Sophie? Thank God.""
"What did Vanessa do?""
There was a long silence.
Then Patricia said, "Your father isn't the only person she used to get that loan.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who else?""
Patricia took a shaky breath.
"Me.""
May you like
And before I could ask another question, she added:
"She used my house, too.""
