Amused

Chapter 2: The Missing Fifty Thousand

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The balloons bobbed gently above the sports car. A piece of gold ribbon fluttered across the patio, catching beneath one of the tires.

Marcus stared at his shoes.

Vanessa stared at Dad.

I stood between them, clutching my empty phone as if it were the only proof that I hadn't imagined everything.

Dad broke the silence.

"Vanessa, I asked you a question.""

She set her glass on the patio table.

"Not out here, Daniel.""

"Where would you prefer? The living room? The kitchen? The room where you decided my daughter's future was yours to spend?""

Her face tightened.

"Don't speak to me like that.""

"Then stop giving me reasons to.""

I had never heard Dad speak to Vanessa in that tone. Even when they argued, he usually lowered his voice and tried to find a compromise.

This wasn't a compromise.

He was looking at her as if he had just discovered he didn't know the woman standing in front of him.

Vanessa reached for my phone.

"Give me that. I need to see what transactions you're talking about.""

Dad pulled it away.

"No.""

"It's Sophie's phone!""

"And it's her money. Apparently, those boundaries haven't meant much to you lately.""

Vanessa's cheeks turned red.

"You are embarrassing me in front of everyone.""

I let out a disbelieving laugh.

"You're worried about being embarrassed?""

She whipped around.

"Don't you dare take that tone with me.""

"Then where's my money?""

"Sophie," Dad said gently, placing a hand on my shoulder.

"Let me handle this.""

I wanted to believe that he could.

But I had just watched my savings disappear while the adults in my life celebrated.

I stepped away from his hand.

"I want an answer, too.""

Dad nodded once.

"You're right.""

He faced Vanessa again.

"Show me the account you transferred the money into.""

She crossed her arms.

"I don't have to show you every financial detail of my life.""

"You're my wife. This money was taken from my daughter's account. I absolutely have to know.""

"You don't understand what happened.""

"Then help me understand.""

Vanessa glanced toward Marcus.

He immediately shook his head.

"Mom, don't look at me. I didn't do anything.""

"No one's accusing you yet," Dad said.

Marcus looked offended.

"Yet? Seriously?""

"You received a thirty-five-thousand-dollar car funded by money that didn't belong to you. I think a few questions are reasonable.""

Marcus shoved the keys into his pocket.

"I never asked her to take Sophie's money.""

I stared at him.

"You told me last month that you couldn't afford new tires.""

"I was joking.""

"You complained about your insurance bill for an entire dinner.""

"Okay, and?""

"And now you have a sports car!""

"Can you stop acting like everything I get is an attack on you?""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"Everything you get isn't an attack on me. But this was literally taken from me!""

Dad stepped between us.

"Both of you, stop.""

Marcus threw his hands into the air.

"Fine. I'm going inside.""

"You're staying here," Dad said.

Marcus froze.

"What?""

"Nobody is leaving until I understand what's happened.""

Vanessa gave a short, bitter laugh.

"You're treating us like criminals.""

Dad looked down at the phone.

"I'm treating this like a serious financial problem. Eighty-five thousand dollars doesn't vanish because somebody had a bad afternoon.""

He opened the transaction details and asked me to identify anything I recognized.

Most of the transfers were unfamiliar.

The first was for $10,000, sent nearly six weeks earlier.

The second was for $15,000.

Then $5,000.

Then another $20,000.

The final transfer to the dealership was listed as $35,000.

The amounts added up to eighty-five thousand dollars exactly.

Dad's thumb stopped over the first transaction.

"These started six weeks ago?""

I nodded.

"I didn't know. I thought the account was fine.""

"Did you give Vanessa permission to access it?""

"No.""

He looked at her.

"Did Sophie give you permission?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"I was trying to help this family.""

"That's not an answer.""

"I had access to the account because of the original arrangement.""

"That arrangement was for managing her savings while she was a minor. Not for spending them.""

"She turned eighteen only recently.""

"Which is exactly why we were supposed to move the account into her name.""

Vanessa looked away.

I remembered the appointment we had postponed. I remembered Dad promising we would go to the bank together.

For the first time, anger toward him rose alongside my hurt.

"Why didn't we transfer it sooner?""

Dad flinched.

"I should have followed through.""

"You promised me.""

"I know.""

"You said it was my money.""

"It is your money.""

"Then why could she take it?""

His eyes filled with something I rarely saw there.

Shame.

"I thought the account was secure. I should have checked. I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

"Exactly! Daniel, you were responsible for the account, too. Why are you acting as if I did everything alone?""

Dad turned slowly.

"Because you're the one who took it.""

"I used it for our family.""

"Thirty-five thousand dollars for a sports car is not a family necessity.""

"It's an investment in Marcus's future.""

"His future doesn't require a sports car.""

Marcus muttered, "You don't have to insult it.""

Dad ignored him.

"And the other fifty thousand?""

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"I sent some money to my mother.""

Dad stared at her.

"Some money?""

"For a trip.""

The words fell into the silence like a glass shattering.

I blinked.

"Your mother?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"She has worked hard her entire life. She never gets to enjoy anything. I wanted to give her a beautiful vacation.""

I couldn't tell whether I wanted to scream or laugh.

"You bought your mother a vacation with my college fund?""

"Don't be dramatic. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.""

"How much?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Dad stepped closer.

"How much did you send her?""

She swallowed.

"Daniel, I was going to replace the money.""

"How much?""

"I had a plan.""

"HOW MUCH?""

The shout startled even Marcus.

Vanessa backed toward the patio table.

"Fifty thousand," she whispered.

My knees nearly gave way.

Fifty thousand dollars.

My entire savings account had been reduced to a sports car and somebody else's holiday.

Dad looked physically ill.

"Fifty thousand dollars for a trip?""

"It wasn't just a trip," Vanessa said quickly.

"There were hotels, flights, private tours, a cruise, shopping—"

"Stop.""

She fell silent.

Dad pressed a hand against his forehead.

"Tell me you didn't spend all of it.""

"I didn't spend every dollar myself.""

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the house.

"I made some arrangements.""

"What arrangements?""

"Daniel, please. We can talk about this without Sophie standing here.""

"No," I said.

My voice surprised me.

Vanessa looked at me.

I stepped forward.

"You don't get to send me away so you can invent a better explanation. You took my money. I deserve to know what happened.""

For a moment, she looked as if she might slap me.

Instead, she pointed a trembling finger at me.

"You have no idea what it takes to hold a family together. You think because you worked a few shifts at a grocery store, you understand sacrifice?""

I stared at her.

"I worked six years.""

"And I have spent three years trying to make this house feel like one family.""

"By stealing from me?""

"By making sure Marcus doesn't feel like an outsider!""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Mom, I don't think—"

"Not now, Marcus!""

Dad's head snapped toward her.

"Don't shout at him for telling the truth.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Dad took out his own phone.

"I'm calling the bank.""

Her face went pale.

"Why?""

"Because I want to know exactly where every dollar went, whether any transfers can be reversed, and who had authorization to move the money.""

She grabbed for his arm.

"Daniel, don't do this. You'll make everything worse.""

He stepped away.

"You already made everything worse.""

He called the bank's fraud department and put the phone on speaker.

A recorded voice asked him to wait.

Vanessa began pacing.

"This is ridiculous. The money was sitting there. I moved it temporarily. I was going to put it back.""

I looked at her.

"With what?""

She stopped.

Dad's eyes lifted from the phone.

"Yes, Vanessa. With what?""

She didn't answer.

The bank representative finally came on the line. Dad explained that a large amount had been transferred from an account belonging to his daughter without her permission.

The representative asked for identifying details, then reviewed the transaction history.

"Mr. Bennett," the representative said carefully, "I can see the outgoing transfers. However, the account's access history and authorization records will need to be reviewed before we can determine which transactions can be disputed.""

"Can you tell me where the money went?""

"We can confirm the destination details available to us, but some transfers were sent to external accounts. I'll need to open a formal investigation.""

Dad asked about the $35,000 payment to the dealership.

The representative confirmed that the transaction had cleared.

Then Dad asked about the $50,000.

There was a pause.

"I can see that the remaining transfers went to more than one destination," the representative said.

"The account holder can request a complete transaction report. There may also be additional documentation associated with the transfers.""

Dad's eyes narrowed.

"More than one destination?""

Vanessa stopped pacing.

The representative continued.

"One transfer appears to have been sent to a personal account. Other transactions went through a separate financial service. I can't disclose the recipient's private account information without the appropriate verification.""

Dad thanked the representative and ended the call.

He stood perfectly still.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"You told me you sent fifty thousand dollars to your mother for a vacation.""

"That's what I did.""

"The bank says the money went to more than one destination.""

"Travel arrangements involve different companies!""

"Then give me the receipts.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Dad held out his hand.

"Your phone.""

Vanessa clutched it to her chest.

"Absolutely not.""

"Show me the transfers.""

"My private messages are none of your business.""

"Not when you're using them to hide where my daughter's money went.""

"Daniel, you cannot be serious!""

"Your phone. Now.""

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Vanessa's expression changed.

Her anger dissolved into a desperate, calculating fear.

She looked at Marcus.

He looked back at her.

And in that silent exchange, I realized there was something else neither of them wanted Dad to discover.

Dad noticed it, too.

He took one step toward his wife.

"Vanessa, what else did you do?""

She began crying.

Not the delicate, controlled tears she used when she wanted sympathy.

These were ragged, panicked sobs.

"I can explain everything," she said.

"You just have to let me explain.""

Dad's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Then start with the truth.""

Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.

"I didn't just take the money from Sophie's account.""

My stomach twisted.

Dad stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

She looked toward the house again.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"There's another account, Daniel. And Sophie isn't the only person whose money is involved.""
