Chapter 6: The Man Who Erased the Truth
The room went silent.
Not the comfortable kind of silence.
The kind that arrived before something broke.
Madison stared at the screen.
The name was still there.
*Daniel Vale.*
For years, she had trusted that name.
It was written on birthday cards.
It was saved in her phone.
It was attached to every memory she had of someone who promised he was looking out for her.
Now it was attached to a deleted file.
A file about her mother.
“Explain,” Madison said.
Her voice was low.
Daniel didn’t move.
“Madison…”
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
His expression tightened.
“Like what?””
“Like you’re still the person who protected me.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I was.””
“Then why are you deleting evidence about my mother?””
“I’m not.””
The answer came too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Madison laughed quietly.
“You really think I’m still that easy to fool?””
Daniel looked at Amelia.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
Amelia’s face remained cold.
“A misunderstanding doesn’t create a deletion request under your credentials.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Can you verify the access?””
Marcus nodded.
“I already did.””
“And?””
“The request came from a device registered to you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Madison stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t do it.””
“Then someone used your device.””
“Yes.””
“Your passwords?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Madison’s eyes narrowed.
“You gave someone access.””
Daniel looked away.
“Years ago.””
The admission landed heavily.
Amelia crossed her arms.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Who, Daniel?””
He remained silent.
Madison felt something inside her break.
Not because she didn’t know the answer.
Because she did.
“You know who.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
The sentence made her angry.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Her voice rose.
“My father said it. You said it. Everyone who hurt me used the same excuse.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand what was happening.””
“Then explain it.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you everything, you’ll never see your family the same way again.””
Madison looked at him.
“I think that already happened.””
For a moment, Daniel looked like he wanted to say something.
But he didn’t.
Instead, Amelia walked toward the computer.
“Marcus, stop the deletion.””
“I’m trying.””
“How much time?””
Marcus checked.
“Two minutes.””
Madison looked at the screen.
“What happens if it finishes?””
“The file is gone.””
“And the backup?””
Amelia’s expression changed slightly.
“There is no backup.””
Madison froze.
“No backup?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Amelia looked at the screen.
“Because Evelyn trusted very few people.””
Madison swallowed.
“And she trusted you.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Madison looked at her.
“Why?””
Amelia was quiet for a moment.
“Because I was there.””
“Where?””
“The night she lost you.””
The words pulled Madison’s attention away from Daniel.
“What?””
Amelia looked at the old recording device.
“She came to me after leaving the courthouse.””
Madison felt her chest tighten.
“She went to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew your father would try to destroy every piece of evidence she had.””
Madison looked at Daniel.
“And he did.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Madison, listen to me.””
“No.””
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your mother was in danger.””
Madison stared.
“From who?””
Daniel looked toward the computer.
The timer continued.
One minute and thirty seconds.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“I thought I was helping.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“It’s not.””
Madison waited.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Your father wasn’t the only person involved.””
The room changed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Amelia.
Then back at Madison.
“There were people inside the company. People with power. People who didn’t want Evelyn exposing them.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know all of them.””
“But you know some.””
Daniel said nothing.
Madison stepped closer.
“You know.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Before Daniel could answer, Marcus interrupted.
“Thirty seconds.””
Everyone looked at the screen.
Amelia moved quickly.
“Can you stop it?””
“I need authorization.””
“Use mine.””
Marcus typed rapidly.
The timer continued.
Twenty seconds.
Madison stood frozen.
Watching years of hidden truth disappear.
Then Daniel suddenly grabbed the computer.
Everyone reacted.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Daniel pulled his hand back.
“I’m sorry.””
Madison stared.
“Were you trying to stop it?””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
The honesty shocked her.
“Then what were you doing?””
He looked at the screen.
“I was trying to make sure something else didn’t get released.””
“What?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The timer reached ten seconds.
Amelia looked at him.
“What else is on that file?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“The reason Evelyn really disappeared.””
Five seconds.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, nobody even breathed.
Then the computer restarted.
Marcus checked.
“It’s gone.””
Madison felt numb.
The last evidence of her mother’s truth had vanished.
Or so she thought.
Because then Amelia smiled.
Not happily.
Relieved.
Madison noticed.
“You knew.””
Amelia looked at her.
“Knew what?””
“You’re not upset.””
A small silence.
Then Amelia reached beneath her desk.
She pulled out a second device.
A small silver drive.
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
Madison looked at it.
“What is that?””
Amelia held it carefully.
“The reason I never feared the deletion.””
Daniel stepped back.
“Amelia…”
“You thought I would keep everything in one place?””
Daniel looked defeated.
Madison stared.
“You had a backup.””
“Yes.””
“Then why let him try?””
Amelia looked at Daniel.
“Because I needed to know if he was still willing to destroy the truth.””
Madison turned toward Daniel.
“You tested him.””
“Yes.””
“And he failed.””
Daniel looked down.
The pain on his face almost made Madison feel sorry for him.
Almost.
“Open it,” Madison said.
Amelia connected the drive.
A single folder appeared.
No password.
No protection.
Just one file.
*EVELYN’S LAST MESSAGE TO MADISON.*
Madison’s hands trembled.
Another recording.
Another piece of her mother.
She looked at Amelia.
“Play it.””
Amelia pressed the button.
Static.
Then Evelyn’s voice.
But this time, she sounded different.
Not scared.
Determined.
“Madison, if you are hearing this, then you finally know.””
Madison closed her eyes.
“I wish I could have been there when you grew up.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I wish I could have watched your first day of school. Your first heartbreak. Your first success.””
The recording paused.
“But I need you to understand something.””
Madison listened.
“I did not leave because I stopped loving you.””
The words hurt more than she expected.
“I left because someone threatened to take your life away from you completely.””
Madison opened her eyes.
Her mother continued.
“There was a man who helped your father.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
“And he was someone you trusted.””
Daniel looked down.
The recording continued.
“He told me he was protecting you.””
Madison’s breath stopped.
“But protection is not the same as love.””
The room went still.
Then Evelyn said the final words.
“Madison, if Daniel Vale is the person who gives you this message…”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Everyone stared at him.
“…then know this.””
A pause.
“He was never the person who saved you.””
Madison felt the ground disappear beneath her.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Madison looked at him.
“For what?””
His eyes met hers.
“For the night I helped your father take your mother away.””
The confession was finally spoken.
But before Madison could respond, Amelia’s phone rang again.
She answered.
A few seconds later, her face changed.
“What happened?”” Madison asked.
Amelia slowly looked up.
“The police are outside.””
Madison frowned.
“Why?””
Amelia stared at Daniel.
“They received a report.””
“About what?””
A long pause.
Then Amelia said:
“They’re here to arrest you, Daniel.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“For what?””
Amelia looked at the screen.
The answer appeared in a new notification.
A file had been uploaded.
Not deleted.
Uploaded.
And the name attached to it was not Daniel’s.
May you like
It was Madison’s.
*Evidence of Evelyn Vale’s disappearance — submitted by Madison Vale.*
