Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Madison stared at the tablet.

The name on the screen refused to make sense.

*Evelyn Vale.*

Her mother.

A woman who had supposedly disappeared from her life seventeen years ago.

A woman who everyone said had walked away.

A woman who was supposed to be gone forever.

“No,” Madison whispered.

Marcus lowered the tablet slightly.

“I know how it looks.””

“How it looks?””

Madison looked up sharply.

“My dead mother just accessed a private security system using my name.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had an answer that made sense.

Daniel looked pale.

Too pale.

Madison noticed immediately.

She turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked away.

“Madison…”

“You knew something.””

“No.””

“Don’t do that.””

His eyes met hers.

“What?””

“Don’t lie to me again.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried more weight than shouting.

Daniel had spent years controlling conversations.

Tonight, he was losing control of one.

Amelia walked toward the tablet.

“When did the access happen?””

Marcus checked the information.

“Seven minutes ago.””

“From where?””

“Remote connection.””

“Can you trace it?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Not yet.””

Madison laughed softly.

Nobody expected it.

It wasn’t because she found anything funny.

It was because everything had become too impossible.

“My entire life was built on a story.””

She looked at the letter in her hand.

“My mother abandoned me.””

She looked at Daniel.

“My father protected me.””

Then she looked at Amelia.

“And now I’m supposed to believe everyone lied?””

Amelia’s voice was calm.

“I’m not asking you to believe anything.””

“Then what are you asking?””

“To look.””

Madison frowned.

“At what?””

“At the evidence.””

Amelia pointed toward the tablet.

“Your mother’s name appearing in our system isn’t the only thing that matters.””

Marcus tapped the screen.

A new window appeared.

“Actually…”

Everyone turned.

“What?”” Amelia asked.

Marcus looked confused.

“There’s another detail.””

“What detail?””

He zoomed in.

“The credentials weren’t created tonight.””

Madison stepped closer.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus looked at her.

“They were created seventeen years ago.””

The room went silent.

Madison felt her stomach drop.

Seventeen years.

The exact amount of time since her mother vanished.

“That’s impossible,” Daniel said.

Everyone looked at him.

He immediately stopped.

Madison noticed.

“You said that very quickly.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“I mean it doesn’t make sense.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother didn’t have access to anything here.””

Amelia slowly turned toward him.

“You’re certain?””

Daniel hesitated.

That tiny hesitation was enough.

Madison saw it.

“You knew about Eclipse.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

“You did.””

“Madison—”

“My father knew.””

Daniel said nothing.

“My mother knew.””

Still nothing.

“And you knew.””

His silence became the answer.

Madison walked closer.

“How?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“This isn’t what you think.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because I promised.””

The word hung in the air.

Madison froze.

Promised.

A promise meant someone had asked him to hide something.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Your father.””

Madison felt a wave of anger.

“You protected him.””

“I protected you.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You protected the version of me he created.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel slowly sat down.

The confident businessman disappeared.

For the first time, he looked old.

“I was there the night your mother left.””

Madison stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“The night everyone told you she walked away.””

The room became still.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Daniel swallowed.

“You were twelve.””

“I was old enough to know my mother loved me.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Madison’s voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to spend years thinking the person who gave birth to you chose everyone else over you.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know more than you think.””

“Then tell me.””

He remained silent.

“Tell me what happened.””

Daniel looked at Amelia.

Amelia nodded.

“Tell her.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your mother didn’t leave voluntarily.””

Madison’s heartbeat changed.

“What?””

“She was forced out.””

The words she had been afraid to believe suddenly became real.

“By who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Madison stepped closer.

“By who?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Your father.””

The answer should have shocked her.

But somehow, deep down, she already knew.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Because Evelyn found something.””

“What?””

“A file.””

“What kind of file?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A financial file.””

Madison frowned.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It wasn’t about money.””

“Then what was it about?””

Daniel looked at Amelia.

“She discovered your father had been using company funds to pay people.””

Madison stared.

“Paying people for what?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“To erase problems.””

The room became colder.

Madison shook her head.

“My father wasn’t like that.””

Daniel looked at her sadly.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

“No.””

“Madison—”

“No.””

She backed away.

Because accepting this meant accepting that the person she loved most was not who she thought.

And that was harder than any lie.

Amelia walked toward the desk and opened another folder.

“I have something else.””

Madison looked at her.

“What?””

“A recording.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Amelia’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew about it?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Amelia didn’t answer.

She removed a small device from the folder.

Madison stared.

“What is that?””

“Your mother left it with me.””

Daniel’s voice became urgent.

“Amelia, don’t.””

Madison looked between them.

“What’s on it?””

Amelia pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice appeared.

A voice Madison hadn’t heard in seventeen years.

Her mother.

Her hands immediately covered her mouth.

“Madison…”

The single word broke her.

Because it wasn’t a memory.

It wasn’t a dream.

It was real.

Evelyn’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But full of love.

“If you’re hearing this, then I failed to protect you.””

Madison started crying silently.

The recording continued.

“I need you to know something. I never left because I wanted to leave.””

Madison closed her eyes.

“I fought for you.””

A pause.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“But your father gave me a choice.””

The recording crackled.

“Lose you forever…”

Another pause.

“Or disappear.””

Madison looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

The voice continued.

“And I chose the only option that gave me a chance to see you again someday.””

Madison held her breath.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“Madison, if you ever find this recording, it means Amelia finally decided the danger has passed.””

Amelia looked down.

Madison noticed.

“Danger?””

The recording continued.

“There is someone close to your father who knows what happened.””

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly stepped back.

Evelyn’s voice became softer.

“Someone who helped him take me away.””

Madison looked at Daniel.

The recording continued.

“Madison, don’t trust the person who tells you they were protecting you.””

Daniel’s face lost all color.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

Evelyn wasn’t talking about her father.

She was talking about someone else.

Someone still alive.

Someone standing in the room.

Madison looked at Daniel.

“Who was she talking about?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Who?””

His silence lasted too long.

Then Amelia’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

She answered.

A few seconds later, her expression changed.

“What happened?”” Madison asked.

Amelia slowly lowered the phone.

“The security breach wasn’t someone trying to access our system.””

Madison frowned.

“Then what was it?””

Amelia looked at the tablet.

“They weren’t trying to get inside.””

She paused.

“They were trying to delete something.””

Madison’s heart raced.

“What?””

Amelia turned the screen around.

A folder appeared.

One that had been hidden for seventeen years.

The title was simple.

*EVELYN VALE — FINAL EVIDENCE*

And beneath it was a notification.

*Deletion in progress.*

May you like

With one name attached to the request.

*Daniel Vale.*
