Chapter 6: The Secret Vanessa Had Been Hiding From Everyone

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.

He looked at Brielle's photograph on the refrigerator.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“What does Brielle have to do with this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Nothing.””

Noah clung to Marcus's hand.

“Mom said Uncle Daniel was going to tell the people.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Go upstairs!””

Noah jumped.

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

“Stop shouting at him.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Marcus took Noah into the living room and sat beside him.

“Buddy, I need you to listen carefully. You haven't done anything wrong. Whatever grown-ups are arguing about is not your responsibility.””

Noah nodded.

“Am I going to live with the other family?””

“No.””

“Even if Mom says I have to?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Even then.””

He kissed the boy's forehead.

“Go get your favorite pajamas. You can sleep in my room tonight.””

Noah hurried upstairs.

Marcus waited until the bedroom door closed before returning to the kitchen.

Vanessa was standing beside the counter.

He placed the placement agreement in front of her.

“Tell me what Daniel meant.””

She looked exhausted.

“Brielle isn't involved in this.””

“Then you won't mind explaining.””

Vanessa sat down.

For several seconds, she stared at the table.

Then she spoke.

“Daniel has always been irresponsible.””

Marcus said nothing.

“He borrowed money from people. He gambled. He made promises he couldn't keep. For years, I've helped him.””

“With my money.””

“With our money.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“There's a difference?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Last year, he got into serious trouble. He owed more than a hundred thousand dollars. Some people threatened him.””

“And?””

“He came to me.””

“What did he want?””

“Help.””

“Financial help?””

“At first.””

Marcus leaned against the counter.

“What's the other help?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Daniel had information about Brielle's biological father.””

Marcus frowned.

“I thought Brielle's father was dead.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That was what I told everyone.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Was that another lie?””

She began crying.

“His name was Michael Collins. We were together before I met you. He was a terrible man. He disappeared when Brielle was little.””

Marcus remembered Vanessa's explanation.

She had told him that Brielle's father died in a workplace accident.

He had believed her.

“Why did you tell me he was dead?””

“Because I wanted Brielle to have a normal childhood.””

“And Daniel knows where he is?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He found him.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“What does this have to do with Noah?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Michael was involved in the original arrangement.””

Marcus stared.

“What arrangement?””

She stood and began pacing.

“When Rachel gave birth, Daniel introduced her to someone who claimed to arrange private adoptions. Michael was working with him.””

Marcus felt sick.

“Michael Collins?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He was involved in private placement businesses. He knew people who could arrange documents, payments, and temporary guardianships.””

Marcus slowly sat down.

“So Brielle's biological father helped arrange the paperwork that separated Rachel from Noah?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And Daniel used those same contacts to arrange the Whitmore agreement?””

“Yes.””

Marcus stared at the floor.

This was bigger than a family argument.

It was a network of lies that had existed for years.

“Why did Daniel threaten to expose Brielle?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Because he discovered that Michael had another child.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“A baby girl.””

“When?””

“About two years ago.””

“Who is the mother?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Then why is this a problem for Brielle?””

“Because Michael left money in a trust for his children. Daniel believes he can get access to it if he proves Brielle's identity and connects her to the family.””

Marcus stared.

“And he wants you to help him?””

“He wants me to sign documents confirming that Michael was Brielle's father.””

“Is he?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Then why does it matter?””

“Because I told everyone he was dead. I also told the authorities that I didn't know where he was when he disappeared. But Daniel has records showing I continued communicating with him.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You lied under oath?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Years ago.””

He slowly exhaled.

The room suddenly felt too small.

He thought of Brielle.

She was sixteen.

Difficult sometimes, entitled often, but still a child who had been caught in the middle of adults making decisions for their own benefit.

“Does Brielle know?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Does she know Daniel has been using her?””

“No.””

Marcus walked toward the stairs.

“I'm going to talk to her.””

Vanessa caught his arm.

“Don't involve her.””

Marcus looked down at her hand.

“You involved her the moment you allowed Daniel to use her name as leverage.””

He pulled away.

Brielle was in her bedroom, sitting at her vanity.

She was recording a video on her phone.

“Hey, guys! I'm finally showing you the new bag I got today—”

She stopped when Marcus entered.

“Can you knock?””

“Can we talk?””

“I'm busy.””

“Put the phone down.””

She rolled her eyes.

“Mom!””

Vanessa appeared behind him.

“Marcus, please don't.””

He looked at Brielle.

“Did you know Daniel was helping arrange meetings between Noah and another family?””

Brielle frowned.

“What?””

“Did you know?””

“No. Why would I?””

Marcus studied her face.

She looked genuinely confused.

Then she glanced at her mother.

“Mom?””

Vanessa looked away.

Brielle put down her phone.

“What is going on?””

Marcus sat on the edge of the chair.

“Your uncle has been involved in some things that concern Noah. I need to know whether he's ever asked you to keep secrets.””

Brielle's expression changed.

“Why?””

“Has he?””

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“He told me not to tell you about the money.””

“What money?””

Brielle reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a small envelope.

“He gave me this.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside were several thousand-dollar bills and a handwritten note.

For helping the family. Don't tell Marcus.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What's this?””

Vanessa covered her face.

Brielle spoke quietly.

“Uncle Daniel said he needed me to sign something. He said it was just a form about Noah's school.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Did you sign?””

“No.””

“Why?””

She shrugged.

“Because he wouldn't let me read it.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What did he say?””

“He said it was better if I didn't know.””

Vanessa began crying.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You let him use your daughter, too?””

“I didn't know he was going to involve her!””

Brielle stood abruptly.

“Mom, what is happening?””

Vanessa walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, please.””

“Don't call me sweetheart. Why did Uncle Daniel give me money?””

Vanessa tried to hug her.

Brielle stepped back.

“Did you do something bad?””

No one answered.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

Evelyn.

He answered.

“Marcus, I've got an update.””

“Go ahead.””

“I found the company behind Northbridge Family Services. It's registered to a man named Michael Collins.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Brielle's father?””

“Yes. And there's something else. The Whitmore agreement appears to have been processed through his company.””

“Is it legitimate?””

“I'm reviewing that now. But the signatures are suspicious.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“What do you mean?””

“Rachel's signature appears on a document dated after her supposed death. The notary's license was suspended before the document was supposedly witnessed.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“So the whole agreement may be fraudulent.””

“That's right.””

“What should I do?””

“Keep Noah with you. Do not let Vanessa, Daniel, or anyone connected to Northbridge take him anywhere. I'm contacting the appropriate authorities.””

Marcus glanced toward his son.

“There's another problem. Daniel may have been involving Brielle.””

Evelyn paused.

“Then we need to preserve everything. Messages, documents, recordings, financial transactions. Don't delete anything.””

“I understand.””

“And Marcus?””

“Yes?””

“I found a second transfer from the Whitmore family.””

“How much?””

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

Marcus looked at the paperwork.

“Where did it go?””

“To an account registered under Vanessa's name.””

He turned toward his wife.

She was standing motionless beside Brielle.

“Did you receive fifty thousand dollars from the Whitmores?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“They said it was a deposit.””

“For Noah?””

She nodded.

Marcus felt something break inside him.

“You accepted money for my child?””

“I thought I was doing what was best!””

“You thought selling him would solve your problems?””

Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.

“You don't understand what it's like to live in this house!””

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

“Everything is about Noah! Everything! You come home and ask about him. You buy him things.

You take him places. You talk about his future. What about Brielle? What about me?””

Brielle stared at her mother.

“Mom, that's not true.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed!””

Brielle's voice trembled.

“I never asked you to give Noah away.””

The words seemed to hit Vanessa harder than Marcus's accusations.

She sank into a chair.

Marcus walked to the window.

Outside, headlights swept across the driveway.

A car had just pulled in.

He recognized it.

Daniel's SUV.

Marcus moved toward the front door.

Evelyn's warning echoed in his mind.

Don't let anyone take Noah.

He locked the door.

Then his phone received a new message.

It was from an unknown number.

You have until midnight to return the fifty thousand dollars and sign the agreement. Otherwise, we'll release the documents proving what happened to Brielle.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Her face went completely white.

Another message appeared.

This one contained a photograph of a document.

It was a birth certificate.

Brielle's birth certificate.

But the name of the father wasn't Michael Collins.

It was Daniel Price.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Why is your brother listed as Brielle's father?””

Vanessa began trembling.

Brielle stepped forward.

“Mom?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Outside, Daniel stepped out of his SUV and walked toward the front door.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

He was carrying a thick envelope.

May you like

And Marcus suddenly understood something far worse than the possibility that his wife had helped steal his son.

*Daniel hadn't been helping Vanessa hide the truth. He had been using the truth to control her.*
