Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Locked Bedroom
Marcus took the stairs two at a time.
“Noah?””
He reached the bedroom door and knocked.
“Buddy, it's Dad. Open the door.””
Silence.
Then a small voice came from inside.
“Is he gone?””
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
Daniel was standing at the bottom of the staircase, smiling.
“See?”” Daniel said.
“He's shy around people.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“Get out of my house.””
Vanessa hurried forward.
“Marcus, don't speak to my brother like that.””
“Then explain why my son locked himself in his bedroom when he saw him.””
“He's tired.””
“Stop telling me he's tired!””
His voice echoed through the hallway.
Vanessa flinched.
Marcus immediately lowered his voice.
He knocked again.
“Buddy, you can open the door. Nobody is going to come inside without your permission.””
A few seconds passed.
The lock clicked.
Noah opened the door just enough to show his face.
His eyes were red.
Marcus crouched.
“Are you okay?””
Noah nodded.
“Did Daniel scare you?””
The boy glanced down the hallway.
Then he whispered, “He said I wasn't supposed to tell.””
“Tell what?””
Noah's fingers gripped the door.
“That he takes pictures.””
Marcus went still.
“Pictures of what?””
“Me.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
Noah looked toward the staircase again.
“He says they're for the people who want to meet me.””
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
“Who wants to meet you?””
Noah shook his head.
“Mom says they're nice people.””
Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.
“What is he talking about?””
She folded her arms.
“He's confused.””
Daniel laughed.
“Kids say strange things.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“I'm asking you one last time. What have you been doing with my son?””
Daniel lifted his hands.
“Relax. You're making a scene.””
“Get out.””
Vanessa grabbed Marcus's sleeve.
“Don't throw him out! He's my brother.””
“Then you can leave with him.””
Her face hardened.
“You wouldn't dare.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Try me.””
Daniel picked up his sunglasses.
“Fine. I'll go. But you should know something, Marcus.””
He stopped at the front door.
“Your wife has been trying to solve a problem you created.””
Marcus stared at him.
“What problem?””
Daniel smiled.
“Ask her about the papers.””
Then he walked out.
Marcus watched through the window as Daniel drove away.
He turned back.
Vanessa was standing in the hallway.
“What papers?””
She shook her head.
“Nothing.””
“Daniel just told me to ask about papers.””
“He likes making trouble.””
“Then why did Noah say strangers want to meet him?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a split second, she looked almost desperate.
“Marcus, please. Can we talk privately?””
“No. We're going to talk where Noah can see me.””
He opened the bedroom door wider.
Noah was sitting on his bed, holding a stuffed baseball glove Marcus had given him for his seventh birthday.
Marcus walked over and sat beside him.
“I'm right here.””
Vanessa remained in the doorway.
“You're frightening him,” she said.
Marcus looked up.
“Then stop lying.””
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Finally, Vanessa spoke.
“Daniel was helping me with something.””
“What?””
“Something personal.””
“Does it involve my son?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus pulled out his phone.
“Evelyn is coming over.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Your lawyer?””
“Yes.””
“You're bringing a lawyer into our home?””
“I'm bringing someone who understands the difference between a family disagreement and a child being put in danger.””
Vanessa walked away without another word.
An hour later, Evelyn arrived.
She was in her early fifties, wore simple black glasses, and carried a leather folder.
Marcus met her in the study.
He explained the drawing, the school absences, Daniel's visits, and the mysterious payments.
Evelyn listened while taking notes.
When he finished, she placed her folder on the desk.
“I've reviewed the preliminary statements.””
“What did you find?””
“Your wife has made several transfers from the business expense account to an entity called Northbridge Family Services.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“How much?””
“Forty-eight thousand six hundred dollars over six months.””
He stared at her.
“What services?””
“That's what I'm trying to establish.””
Evelyn opened a second document.
“There are also payments to a storage facility, a private transportation company, and a residential property management firm.””
Marcus frowned.
“Vanessa doesn't own any property besides this house.””
“Apparently, she's been paying rent on another address.””
“Where?””
Evelyn slid the paper toward him.
The address was in a neighboring county.
Marcus recognized the street.
It was a residential complex near the airport.
“What's there?””
“I haven't confirmed that yet.””
He picked up his phone.
“I'll go there.””
“No,” Evelyn said immediately.
“Why not?””
“Because if there's something involving your son, we need to proceed carefully. We don't know who lives there or what the arrangement is.””
Marcus stood.
“That's my child.””
“And I am trying to make sure you don't accidentally compromise an investigation that could protect him.””
He sat back down.
Evelyn softened her voice.
“Marcus, I need you to answer one question honestly.””
“What?””
“Have you ever signed any documents concerning Noah's guardianship, custody, or emergency care?””
Marcus frowned.
“Not that I remember.””
“Think carefully.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Last year, Vanessa said the school needed updated emergency contact forms. I signed a stack of papers she left on my desk.””
“Did you read them?””
“I was leaving for a flight. I trusted her.””
Evelyn's expression tightened.
“Do you remember signing anything that gave her authority to make decisions without consulting you?””
“I don't know.””
“Then we need copies of every document she submitted to the school.””
Marcus stared at the folder.
A terrible thought crossed his mind.
“Do you think she's trying to take Noah away from me?””
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
“I'm not going to speculate. But we need to establish exactly what has been filed.””
At that moment, Marcus's phone rang.
The school counselor.
He answered immediately.
“Mrs. Patterson?””
“Mr. Reed, I'm sorry to call so late, but something happened.””
Marcus stood.
“What?””
“Vanessa contacted the school today.””
“What did she want?””
“She requested that Noah be removed from your emergency contact list.””
Marcus went cold.
“On what grounds?””
“She said you were no longer authorized to collect him.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“That's impossible. I'm his father.””
“She also submitted a document claiming that you had agreed to a temporary custody arrangement.””
Evelyn immediately reached for her pen.
“Ask her what date the document was submitted,” she whispered.
Marcus repeated the question.
Mrs. Patterson checked her records.
“Three weeks ago.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Three weeks ago was the same week Noah had stopped talking during their evening calls.
“Did you accept it?”” Marcus asked.
“No. We couldn't verify the document. But Mr. Reed, there's something else.””
“What?””
“Vanessa came to the school with another adult man yesterday.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Daniel?””
“I believe so. They asked whether Noah could be released to him for an extended family visit.””
“Did you let them take him?””
“No. We called you, but you didn't answer.””
Marcus remembered that day.
He had been in a board meeting and had silenced his phone.
“Thank you for not releasing him.””
Mrs. Patterson paused.
“Mr. Reed, I think you should know that Noah was very frightened when we told him he wasn't leaving with them.””
The call ended.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Then Evelyn opened her folder.
“We need to secure the original documents.””
Marcus nodded.
“Tomorrow morning.””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“Tonight.””
She picked up her phone.
“I want a family court attorney on standby, and I want a formal request for the school records prepared immediately.””
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
“I'm going upstairs.””
Evelyn followed him with her eyes.
“Keep Noah with you tonight.””
“I intend to.””
He walked out of the study.
But when he reached the hallway, he heard Vanessa speaking on the phone in the guest bedroom.
Her voice was low.
“It's happening faster than we expected.””
Marcus stopped.
A pause.
Then Vanessa continued.
“No, he hasn't seen the documents yet.””
Another pause.
“He's asking questions about Daniel.””
Marcus moved closer to the partially open door.
Vanessa's next words made his blood run cold.
“If Marcus finds out who Noah's biological mother really was, everything falls apart.””
Marcus froze.
Biological mother?
He pushed the door open.
Vanessa spun around.
Her phone slipped from her hand and landed on the carpet.
“Marcus?””
He stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa bent to retrieve the phone.
“Nothing.””
“Who is Noah's biological mother?””
Her face drained of color.
Marcus took one step forward.
“Vanessa, I was there when you brought him home from the hospital. I signed his birth certificate. I've raised him since the day he was born.””
She said nothing.
He remembered the adoption paperwork they had supposedly completed after her difficult pregnancy.
He remembered the hospital.
The tiny blue blanket.
The first time Noah wrapped his fingers around his thumb.
Then another memory surfaced.
A woman in the hospital corridor, crying quietly while Vanessa spoke to a nurse.
Vanessa had told him she was a distant relative.
Marcus had never asked another question.
He looked at his wife.
“Was that woman Noah's mother?””
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“Marcus, please.””
“Who was she?””
She backed toward the bed.
“You don't understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
Finally, she whispered a name.
“Her name was Rachel.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
Rachel.
His younger sister.
The sister he had been told died in a car accident before Noah was born.
The sister whose funeral he had attended while Vanessa was pregnant.
The sister whose last letter he still kept in his office drawer.
He stared at Vanessa.
“Rachel was dead.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Then Marcus's phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
There was an attachment.
A photograph of a woman standing outside a residential building.
She looked older, thinner, and exhausted.
But Marcus recognized her immediately.
