Chapter 8: The Document I Never Remembered Signing
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
The room felt like it had tilted.
The walls.
The floor.
Everything around me suddenly felt unstable.
“Me?””
My voice sounded distant.
Adrian didn’t look away.
“Yes.””
I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“You don’t understand.””
My hands shook.
“I never changed Nia’s documents.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“I believe you.””
“Then why would you say that?””
“Because your name was there.””
The same sentence again.
My name.
My signature.
My identity.
Everywhere I looked, I was somehow involved in things I had never done.
I grabbed the envelope Emily had written.
“What documents?””
Adrian took a breath.
“Guardianship documents.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
“After Emily became sick, there were discussions about Nia’s future care.””
“That’s normal.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“But someone prepared a document changing certain decisions regarding Nia’s inheritance and personal belongings.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
“And my name was on it?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I walked toward the window.
“No, I would remember that.””
Adrian remained quiet.
That bothered me.
Because he wasn’t arguing.
He wasn’t defending himself.
He looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He folded his hands.
“Emily believed someone used a document you signed for another purpose.””
I turned around.
“What document?””
“A standard family authorization form.””
My mind raced.
After Emily got sick, there were hundreds of papers.
Hospital forms.
Insurance forms.
Financial paperwork.
I had signed so many things while barely sleeping.
Adrian continued.
“Emily believed Vanessa took one of those signatures and attached it to another document.””
The room became silent.
“So someone forged my approval.””
“Yes.””
“Again.””
Adrian nodded.
“Again.””
The word hurt.
Because it meant this wasn’t one mistake.
It was a pattern.
Someone had been building a false version of my life.
A version where I was responsible for decisions I never made.
“Why didn’t Emily tell me?””
Adrian looked sad.
“She tried.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
“Because something happened.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Adrian looked toward the door.
As if he was checking that nobody was listening.
“Emily found proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Vanessa had been moving things before Emily even passed away.””
I felt cold.
“Moving things?””
“Documents. Belongings. Financial records.””
I thought about the storage box.
The missing letters.
The jewelry.
The trust.
Everything.
“How much did Emily know?””
“Enough to be afraid.””
I looked down.
“Afraid of Vanessa?””
Adrian hesitated.
“Afraid of what Vanessa could become.””
The words stayed with me.
Not what Vanessa was.
What she could become.
That difference mattered.
Because maybe once, Vanessa had loved Nia.
Maybe once, she had tried.
But somewhere along the way, something changed.
My phone buzzed.
Nia.
I answered immediately.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
Her voice was quiet.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you coming home?””
I looked at Adrian.
Then at the envelope.
“Yes.””
“Can we talk?””
My heart tightened.
“Of course.””
There was a pause.
Then she whispered:
“I found something else.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“I didn’t want to tell you before.””
“What did you find?””
Another pause.
“In Vanessa’s room.””
I stood.
“What was it?””
Nia’s voice shook.
“A picture.””
“What picture?””
“Of Mom.””
I froze.
“Emily?””
“Yes.””
“That’s not strange.””
“No, Dad.””
Her voice became smaller.
“Not a picture of Mom.””
A chill moved through me.
“A picture of what?””
Silence.
Then:
“Mom and Vanessa together.””
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
“They were together.””
I looked at Adrian.
He immediately noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I covered the phone.
“I need to go.””
He nodded.
“Take the envelope.””
I looked at him.
“Do you know what the picture means?””
Adrian’s face changed.
And that told me he did.
“You know.””
“I have a theory.””
“What theory?””
He looked at the door.
“Go home first.””
I hated that answer.
But I left.
The drive home felt endless.
My thoughts were crashing into each other.
Emily and Vanessa together?
A photo?
A secret meeting?
What had I missed?
When I arrived, Nia was sitting on her bed.
She held a small photograph.
I sat beside her.
“Show me.””
She handed it over.
The picture was old.
The colors had faded.
But the people were clear.
Emily.
And Vanessa.
Standing together.
Smiling.
Not enemies.
Not strangers.
Friends.
I stared at it.
“Where did you find this?””
“In a box in her closet.””
“Whose closet?””
“Vanessa’s.””
I turned the picture over.
There was writing on the back.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized Emily’s handwriting.
*For the two women who will love my daughter when I cannot.*
I looked at Nia.
“What?””
She nodded.
“I thought it was weird.””
I turned the photo back over.
Emily and Vanessa.
Together.
Before everything changed.
“Did Vanessa know you found this?””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
“Good.””
She looked at me.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Were they friends?””
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because I didn’t know.
But then something clicked.
A memory.
A small detail I had forgotten.
Years ago, before Emily got sick, she had introduced me to Vanessa.
At a charity event.
She had said:
“Marcus, this is Vanessa. She’s helping me with something.””
Something.
I had never asked what.
Because why would I?
I trusted Emily.
I trusted everyone.
Maybe too much.
I looked at the picture again.
Then I noticed something.
A reflection in the background.
A sign.
A location.
My breath caught.
“Dad?””
I stood.
“Nia, stay here.””
“What is it?””
I looked closer.
The photo was taken outside a building.
A building I knew.
The same medical center where Emily received treatment.
But the date written on the back wasn’t after Emily got sick.
It was before.
Almost a year before.
I flipped the picture again.
The handwriting.
The date.
The message.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
I called Adrian.
He answered quickly.
“Marcus?””
“You knew about the picture.””
Silence.
“Adrian.””
“I suspected.””
“Why were Emily and Vanessa together?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Because before Vanessa became your wife…”
I froze.
“What?””
Adrian continued.
“Before Emily died, Vanessa wasn’t just someone in your life.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you saying?””
His voice became quieter.
“Emily introduced Vanessa to you because she trusted her.””
I looked at the photograph.
Two women smiling.
Two women who seemed like family.
“Then what happened?””
Adrian answered:
“Vanessa was supposed to be the person who protected Nia after Emily was gone.””
My heart sank.
“Supposed to be?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because Emily discovered Vanessa wasn’t the only one hiding something.””
I looked at Nia.
At the photo.
At everything I thought I knew.
“Who else?””
Adrian whispered:
“Marcus…”
I waited.
“The truth is, Emily didn’t choose Vanessa by accident.””
My breathing stopped.
“She chose her because Vanessa already knew the secret.””
“What secret?””
Adrian’s answer came softly.
“The secret about Nia’s real inheritance.””
I frowned.
“Her inheritance?””
“Yes.””
“What does that mean?””
Adrian paused.
Then said:
“Marcus, there’s something about Nia’s birth that you were never told.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at my daughter.
My little girl.
The child I had raised.
The child I loved more than anything.
“What are you saying?””
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“Emily wasn’t afraid Vanessa would steal Nia’s belongings.””
A pause.
“She was afraid Vanessa would reveal who Nia’s biological father really was.””
My hand went numb.
The phone nearly slipped from my fingers.
Because there was only one person who could answer that question.
Me.
Or someone else.
May you like
And suddenly, every secret from the past six years was leading to one impossible question:
Was Nia really my daughter?
