Chapter 7: The Doctor Who Signed the Secret
I stared at the photograph on my phone.
The signature at the bottom of the trust document belonged to the one person I never thought I would question.
*Dr. Adrian Cole.*
Emily’s doctor.
The man who held my hand in the hospital hallway when I was too afraid to walk into her room.
The man who looked me in the eyes and told me he would do everything possible.
The man who stood at Emily’s funeral and said she was one of the strongest people he had ever met.
I remembered thanking him.
I remembered believing him.
Now I was looking at his name beside a document that had been hidden from me for six years.
“Marcus?””
Ethan’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
He was watching me carefully.
“You knew him?””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone knew him.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Not like Emily did.””
That sentence bothered me.
“What does that mean?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Emily trusted him.””
“She trusted her doctor.””
“More than that.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
Ethan walked back toward the table.
“Before Emily got sick, Adrian wasn’t just her doctor. He became someone she talked to when she was afraid.””
“That’s normal.””
“Yes.””
He paused.
“But Emily was afraid of something besides her illness.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Ethan looked at the phone in my hand.
“You need to talk to him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the only one I can give.””
I hated that.
Everyone had answers.
But nobody wanted to say them.
I left Ethan’s house without another word.
My mind was spinning.
Too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
And somehow, every road led back to people I had trusted.
I drove directly to Adrian’s medical office.
I didn’t call.
I didn’t make an appointment.
I needed to see his reaction before he had time to prepare.
The waiting room looked exactly the same.
The same paintings on the walls.
The same receptionist desk.
The same soft music playing quietly.
I had brought Emily here dozens of times.
I had sat in those chairs.
I had waited for news.
Good news.
Bad news.
Impossible news.
The receptionist looked up.
“Mr. Reed?””
She recognized me.
“I need to see Dr. Cole.””
“Do you have an appointment?””
“No.””
She hesitated.
“He’s with a patient.””
“I’ll wait.””
Something in my voice made her stop arguing.
Twenty minutes later, a door opened.
Adrian stepped out.
He was older now.
More gray in his hair.
But the same calm expression remained.
“Marcus?””
He looked surprised.
Then concerned.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
His eyes moved to the picture.
And his face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You know this document.””
He became quiet.
“Where did you get that?””
Not:
“What is that?””
Again.
Another person who knew.
I felt my anger rise.
“You’re the third person to ask me that instead of answering.””
Adrian looked around.
“Come inside.””
I followed him into his office.
The door closed.
He sat behind his desk.
I remained standing.
“Did you sign Emily’s trust document?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Finally:
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Emily asked me to.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes softened.
“Because she asked me not to.””
I felt like I had heard that sentence too many times.
“Everyone keeps saying Emily wanted secrets.””
“She wanted protection.””
“Protection from me?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“Never from you.””
“Then from who?””
Adrian looked away.
“That’s complicated.””
I stepped closer.
“My daughter’s belongings disappeared.””
His expression changed.
“My daughter was told her mother’s things were gone.””
He looked down.
“My wife hid something from me.””
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done hearing half-truths.””
The room became silent.
“Tell me everything.””
Adrian leaned back.
“Emily knew Vanessa was struggling.””
“With money?””
“Yes.””
“How did she know?””
“Vanessa came to me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She came to my office.””
“When?””
“Months before Emily passed away.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“Why?””
Adrian looked at the floor.
“She asked questions about Emily’s condition.””
“That’s normal.””
“Not the questions she asked.””
“What questions?””
His voice lowered.
“She wanted to know how much time Emily had left.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why would she ask that?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“But Emily became suspicious.””
I clenched my jaw.
“What did she think?””
Adrian was quiet.
Then:
“She thought Vanessa was waiting.””
The word hit me.
Waiting.
“For what?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I understood.
But I didn’t want to.
“You’re saying Vanessa wanted Emily gone?””
“I’m saying Emily was afraid Vanessa was making decisions based on what would happen after Emily was gone.””
I walked away from the desk.
My hands were shaking.
“No.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I’m not saying Vanessa caused anything.””
“Good.””
“Emily never believed that either.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“She never accused Vanessa of causing her illness.””
That mattered.
Because my mind had gone somewhere dark.
Somewhere I didn’t want to go.
Adrian continued.
“But Emily was afraid of what Vanessa would do after she died.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
He sighed.
“Because she loved you.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“She knew you would confront Vanessa.””
“Of course I would.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“And Emily didn’t want her final months filled with fighting.””
I sat down.
The anger was still there.
But underneath it was something else.
Pain.
Emily had spent her final days trying to keep peace.
Even when peace was hurting her daughter.
“Where is the box?””
Adrian looked surprised.
“I don’t know.””
“Everyone says that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I studied his face.
“Then what do you know?””
He was quiet.
Finally, he opened a drawer.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My breath caught.
“Where did you get that?””
“Emily gave it to me.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“The week before she passed away.””
He placed it on the desk.
“She told me only to give it to you if certain conditions happened.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What conditions?””
Adrian looked at me.
“If Nia ever asked about her mother’s belongings and they were missing.””
My throat tightened.
The condition had happened.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew this would happen?””
“She feared it.””
I picked up the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*Marcus.*
Nothing else.
No explanation.
No date.
Just my name.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
Emily’s handwriting.
*Marcus,*
*If you are reading this, then my biggest fear came true.*
I stopped breathing.
I continued.
*I wanted to believe I was wrong. I wanted to believe people would choose love over control.*
My fingers trembled.
*But if Nia’s memories are missing, then there is something you need to know.*
I read the next line.
And my entire body went cold.
*The reason Vanessa wanted the box was not because of what was inside.*
I looked at Adrian.
He looked away.
I continued.
*It was because of what was hidden beneath it.*
My heartbeat became louder.
*There is another file. A file I never wanted you to see unless I had no other choice.*
I turned the page.
But there was no second page.
Only a final sentence.
*Ask Adrian where he was the night I found out the truth.*
I looked up.
Slowly.
“Adrian.””
He didn’t move.
“Where were you?””
His face changed.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Regret.
“Marcus…”
“Where were you?””
He looked at the floor.
Then whispered:
“I was with Emily.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“The night she discovered the truth.””
I stood.
“What truth?””
Adrian’s eyes filled with pain.
And then he said something I never expected.
“Emily found out that someone had been trying to change Nia’s legal documents before she died.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
He took a breath.
“Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
But before I could respond, Adrian added:
“That’s not the worst part.””
I felt a chill.
“What’s the worst part?””
He looked directly at me.
“The person who helped Vanessa prepare those documents…”
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“…was you.””
