Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
I stared at the name until the letters stopped looking real.
*Ethan.*
My brother.
The person who had stood beside me at Emily’s funeral.
The person who had hugged me when I couldn’t stop crying.
The person who told me, “I’ll help you take care of Nia.””
My own brother.
My first instinct was denial.
There had to be another explanation.
Maybe someone else named Ethan.
Maybe Daniel attached the wrong note.
Maybe I was exhausted and seeing connections that weren’t there.
But then I looked at the handwriting.
I knew it.
I had seen it on birthday cards.
On old family documents.
On notes he left whenever he visited.
It was Ethan.
My hands tightened around the paper.
The sentence stared back at me.
*If Marcus finds out, we lose everything.*
Everything.
What did that mean?
What did Ethan and Vanessa have to lose?
I picked up my phone and called Daniel.
He answered after the first ring.
“Marcus?””
“Did you know Ethan was involved?””
There was silence.
A long silence.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
“Daniel.””
“I knew his name appeared in the documents, but I didn’t know the relationship.””
I closed my eyes.
“Explain.””
Daniel sighed.
“The note was found inside the storage paperwork envelope. It wasn’t part of Emily’s original documents.””
“So someone added it later.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I wanted to confirm it first.””
I looked down at the paper.
“Confirm what?””
“That Ethan helped access information related to the storage unit.””
My stomach turned.
“How?””
“He was listed as an emergency contact on one of the old records.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe how many doors had been opened without my knowledge.
“Everyone had access to my life except me.””
“Marcus—”
“No.””
I stopped him.
“Tell me the truth.””
“I’m trying.””
“Then tell me why my brother would write that.””
Daniel was quiet.
Finally, he said:
“I think you need to ask him.””
I ended the call.
I knew Daniel was right.
But knowing something and accepting it were different things.
The next morning, I drove to Ethan’s house.
I didn’t call first.
I didn’t want him to have time to prepare an explanation.
His house was twenty minutes away.
A place I had visited hundreds of times.
A place where we had celebrated birthdays, holidays, and family dinners.
A place that suddenly felt unfamiliar.
I knocked.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
Ethan smiled.
Then he saw my face.
The smile disappeared.
“Marcus.””
“Can I come in?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Sure.””
I walked inside.
The house smelled like coffee.
The television was on in the background.
Normal.
Everything looked normal.
That was the strangest part.
I held up the note.
“Do you know what this is?””
Ethan looked at it.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
He knew.
“Where did you get that?””
Not:
“What is that?””
Not:
“I’ve never seen that before.””
He asked where I got it.
I placed it on the table.
“So it’s yours.””
Ethan sat down slowly.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I expected.
“I’ve spent years listening.””
He looked at me.
“I listened when Vanessa said Nia was just adjusting.””
I stepped closer.
“I listened when my daughter stopped talking about her mother.””
My voice shook.
“I listened when everyone told me everything was fine.””
Ethan looked down.
“Marcus.””
“Was it you?””
He didn’t answer.
“Did you help Vanessa take Emily’s things?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
I watched him carefully.
“But?””
His jaw tightened.
“There were things you didn’t know.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“Then tell me.””
Ethan stood.
“You think this is simple.””
“It is simple.””
I pointed at the note.
“My daughter’s mother left something for her. Someone took it. Someone used my name. Someone hid the truth.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“People say they’re protecting someone when they’re really protecting themselves.””
Ethan looked hurt.
Maybe he was.
Maybe he wasn’t.
At this point, I didn’t know anymore.
“Tell me what happened after Emily died.””
He looked away.
And that was when I knew.
There was a part of the story I had never heard.
“I knew Emily was worried.””
“About Vanessa?””
Ethan nodded.
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He sat down again.
“Emily called me.””
“When?””
“Two weeks before she passed away.””
The room went quiet.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because she asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She didn’t want you distracted.””
“That makes no sense.””
“She knew you were falling apart.””
My eyes burned.
“I was her husband.””
“I know.””
“Then why would she tell you instead of me?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because she knew you would try to fix everything.””
That sounded like Emily.
Too much like Emily.
I sat across from him.
“What did she say?””
Ethan was silent for a moment.
Then:
“She said she didn’t trust Vanessa with Nia’s memories.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
“She didn’t know exactly what Vanessa would do.””
“Did she mention the money?””
Ethan looked surprised.
“You know about that?””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“Then you know more than I wanted you to.””
I leaned forward.
“What else?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
“Ethan.””
He sighed.
“Emily found something.””
“What?””
“A document.””
“What kind of document?””
“A document connected to Vanessa.””
I waited.
“She discovered Vanessa had been hiding financial problems.””
I frowned.
“Financial problems?””
“Yes.””
“What does that have to do with Emily’s belongings?””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Everything.””
“Explain.””
He stood and walked toward the window.
“Vanessa wasn’t just worried about Emily’s memories.””
My stomach tightened.
“She was worried about money.””
“What money?””
Ethan turned around.
“The money Emily left for Nia.””
I felt sick.
“You mean the trust?””
“Yes.””
“But Daniel said the trust was protected.””
“It was.””
“Then what happened?””
Ethan hesitated.
“She needed access.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
I stood.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I’m saying Vanessa didn’t just take the box because she hated Emily.””
The words hung in the air.
“Then why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because she was trying to hide what was inside.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“What was inside?””
Ethan looked toward the note.
“That’s the part I don’t know.””
“But you knew about it.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His face changed.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
He swallowed.
“I helped her.””
The room went silent.
I stared at my brother.
“You helped her?””
“Not at first.””
“What does that mean?””
He sat down.
“Vanessa called me after Emily died.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She said she needed help organizing things.””
“And you believed her.””
“I thought she was grieving too.””
“So you helped her.””
“Yes.””
“What did you do?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I gave her information.””
“What information?””
He whispered:
“Your signature.””
Everything inside me went cold.
“You gave her my signature?””
“I didn’t know what she was going to do.””
“But she used it.””
Ethan looked away.
“Yes.””
I couldn’t speak.
My own brother had handed someone the tool they used to betray me.
“I trusted you.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find out everyone knew something about your daughter except you.””
Ethan looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to believe him.
I wanted to.
But apologies didn’t return six years.
They didn’t return Emily’s letters.
They didn’t erase Nia’s fear.
I picked up the note.
“One question.””
Ethan looked up.
“What?””
“Why does it say ‘we lose everything’?””
His face changed.
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan.””
He looked toward the floor.
Then whispered:
“Because Vanessa wasn’t the only person involved.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“There was someone else.””
“Who?””
Ethan’s eyes moved to mine.
And the fear on his face was worse than guilt.
“Marcus…”
“Who?””
He took a breath.
“The person Vanessa was afraid of wasn’t you.””
I waited.
“It was the person who made her do it.””
The room felt like it was shrinking.
“Who made her do it?””
Ethan looked at me.
Then said a name.
A name that made no sense.
A name that should have been impossible.
“Emily’s doctor.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Marcus, I found the original trust file. You need to see who signed as the witness.*
Attached was a photograph.
I opened it.
Two signatures appeared at the bottom.
Emily’s.
And the witness.
I stared.
Because the witness wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Ethan.
It wasn’t anyone I expected.
It was someone who had been standing beside my family from the beginning.
Someone I had trusted completely.
May you like
And beneath the signature was a name:
*Dr. Adrian Cole.*
