Amused

Chapter 8: The House That Wasn't in Their Names

I didn't drive directly to my sister's house.

Instead, I pulled into a quiet parking lot near a grocery store and called David.

The children were sitting in the back seat.

Lily was holding Mr. Buttons.

Caleb was staring out the window.

Neither had spoken since we left the house.

“David,” I said when he answered, “there may be another property involved.””

He was silent for a moment.

“Tell me what you know.””

I explained Daniel's message.

I told him about the photographs Lily had seen and the possibility that Vanessa and Melissa had purchased a property through someone else.

David asked me to forward the messages.

Then he said, “Don't try to investigate this yourself. I'll have the title records checked through the appropriate channels.””

“Can you find out whether my house was used to secure that loan?””

“We're already working on it. The lender has not confirmed approval, and that's important. We need to establish whether the application was fraudulent and whether any funds were disbursed.””

“What about the other property?””

“I'll look into it.””

I glanced at the rearview mirror.

“David, I need to know whether my wife was planning to move the children somewhere.””

“Let's establish the facts first. But don't let anyone pressure you into signing a custody or property agreement.””

I ended the call.

Then I turned toward the back seat.

“Are you two hungry?””

Lily nodded.

Caleb shrugged.

“There's a burger place across the street,” I said.

“How about dinner?””

Lily lifted Mr. Buttons.

“Can he come?””

“He's already part of the family.””

She smiled faintly.

For the first time that afternoon, I saw some of the tension leave her face.

We went inside.

Caleb ordered a cheeseburger.

Lily ordered chicken tenders and chocolate milk.

I barely touched my food.

Halfway through dinner, Caleb put down his drink.

“Dad, can I ask something?””

“Of course.””

“Are you going to divorce Mom?””

I looked at him.

“I'm not making that decision tonight.””

“Okay.””

He stared at the table.

“But if you do, am I going to lose her?””

I felt a knot form in my stomach.

I hadn't considered how complicated this would be for him.

Vanessa had been his mother for his entire life. She was the person who packed his lunches, attended his school events, and tucked him into bed when he was younger.

Whatever she had done, he was still a sixteen-year-old boy trying to understand why the person he loved had hurt him.

“You don't have to stop loving your mother,” I said.

He looked up.

“Even after everything?””

“Your relationship with her is yours. You don't have to choose sides.””

He swallowed.

“What if she asks me to lie?””

“Then you tell the truth. You don't have to protect anyone from the consequences of their decisions.””

Lily looked between us.

“Can I still see Caleb if he goes to his dad's house?””

Caleb immediately turned toward her.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

“But what if?””

He reached across the table and took her hand.

“I'm not leaving you, Lily.””

She nodded.

Then she returned to her chicken tenders.

That small gesture meant more to me than either child could understand.

They had become each other's safe place.

And Vanessa had nearly taken that away.

At eight thirty, David called.

“Mark, I found something.””

I stepped outside the restaurant.

“What?””

“The property Daniel mentioned appears to be a small residential house outside Savannah. The recorded owner is a limited liability company.””

“Who owns the company?””

“I'm checking the business records. The registered organizer is Melissa Carter.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course.””

“There's more. The property was purchased six weeks ago.””

“With what money?””

“That's what we're investigating. The purchase records show a down payment, but the lender's file is not public. I can't establish the source of the funds yet.””

“Could it be our savings?””

“Possibly. The dates overlap with the transfers, but we need the bank records.””

I looked through the restaurant window.

Caleb was showing Lily how to fold a napkin into a triangle.

“Was the house supposed to be for Daniel?””

“I'm not sure. But the property was advertised as a three-bedroom home.””

“Three bedrooms?””

“Yes.””

I thought about the proposed arrangement.

Caleb with Daniel.

Lily with my sister.

Vanessa and me in the marital home.

Then I remembered Lily saying she had seen photographs.

“David, could the house have been intended for both children?””

“That's possible. But we need more information.””

He paused.

“There's another issue. The lender's investigation department found an application for a second credit facility connected to the property. It lists Vanessa and Melissa as intended borrowers.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Is it approved?””

“Not according to the preliminary information. The lender has placed it under review.””

I looked toward the parking lot.

“Thank you.””

“Mark, bring the children somewhere secure tonight. I'll meet you tomorrow morning.””

After we finished dinner, I drove to my sister Susan's house.

She opened the door before I even knocked.

“Mark? What's happened?””

I set the bags down.

“Can the kids stay here tonight?””

Her expression changed.

“Of course.””

She immediately crouched to hug Lily.

“Look at you! I haven't seen you in weeks.””

Lily wrapped her arms around her aunt.

“Can Mr. Buttons stay, too?””

Susan smiled.

“He gets the guest room.””

Caleb carried the bags inside.

Susan looked at me.

“What's going on?””

“It's complicated.””

She glanced at the children.

“Do they know?””

“They know enough.””

She lowered her voice.

“Then let's not discuss it in front of them.””

I appreciated that.

While Susan prepared the guest rooms, I stepped onto the back porch and called Daniel.

I hadn't spoken to the man in years.

When he answered, his voice sounded tired.

“Mark?””

“Daniel.””

“I'm glad you called.””

“I want to understand exactly what agreement you made with Vanessa.””

He sighed.

“I expected this.””

“Start talking.””

Daniel was quiet for several seconds.

Then he said, “Melissa contacted me about two months ago. She said Vanessa wanted to help Caleb reconnect with me.””

“Why didn't Vanessa tell me?””

“She said you weren't ready.””

I almost laughed.

“Continue.””

“She told me you were considering sending Caleb to Savannah for a while. She said you wanted him to have a relationship with his biological father.””

“That's a lie.””

“I know that now.””

“What did she offer you?””

“Money. Help getting an apartment. And a chance to spend time with Caleb.””

“Did you know she was using our savings?””

“I thought the money was coming from her personal account.””

“It wasn't.””

Daniel exhaled.

“I'm sorry.””

“Did you know about the custody agreement?””

“She showed me a draft. She said it was something you had already approved.””

I felt anger rising again.

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to believe her.””

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I missed my son.””

For a moment, I didn't speak.

Then he continued.

“I know I don't deserve to ask for anything. I made mistakes. I disappeared. But when Vanessa told me I might have a chance to be part of Caleb's life again, I thought I could finally make things right.””

“So you signed an agreement involving money and custody.””

“Yes.””

“Did you ask Caleb what he wanted?””

“No.””

“Did you think about how he would feel?””

“I should have.””

I leaned against the railing.

“Where does the other house fit into this?””

Daniel went quiet.

“Mark, I need to tell you something.””

“Go ahead.””

“Melissa said the house was supposed to be a temporary family property. She told me the children would stay there while you and Vanessa sorted out the marriage.””

“Why would I agree to that?””

“She said you wouldn't have a choice once the loan went through.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“She told me the house loan would give them enough money to settle everything. Then she said Vanessa would be able to prove you had agreed to the arrangement.””

I stared into the dark backyard.

“Did she show you anything?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

“A document with your signature.””

I closed my eyes.

“Was it the family transition agreement?””

“I think so.””

“Did she show you anything else?””

Daniel hesitated.

“An email.””

“What email?””

“She said it proved you wanted a divorce.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“I never sent an email like that.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because I saw the address it came from.””

He paused.

“It wasn't yours.””

I straightened.

“What was it?””

“I don't remember the entire address. But it had your name followed by a different number.””

I looked toward the kitchen.

Susan was helping Lily prepare hot chocolate.

“Daniel, did you keep a copy?””

“Yes.””

“Send it to me.””

“I will.””

He hesitated.

“Mark, there's something else.””

“What?””

“Melissa said the house wasn't the final destination.””

I felt a chill.

“What do you mean?””

“She said once the money came through, Vanessa would leave Georgia.””

I stared at the darkness.

“Leave Georgia?””

“She mentioned North Carolina. A new beginning. Somewhere nobody knew about the custody situation.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

“Was Caleb supposed to go with her?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Yes.””

I felt my stomach turn.

My wife had apparently planned to take my stepson, move him to another state, and leave me behind with a financial disaster and a daughter who had been made to feel unwanted.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because Caleb called me.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“Earlier today. He asked whether I was taking him away from you.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did you tell him?””

“I told him no.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I told him I wasn't going to take him anywhere. I told him if he ever wanted to see me, it would be because he chose to.””

I said nothing.

Then Daniel added, “Mark, I'm sending you everything I have. I don't want to be part of what they did.””

We ended the call.

I stood outside for another minute before returning to the house.

Caleb was sitting at the kitchen table.

Susan was upstairs with Lily.

He looked at me.

“Did you talk to him?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

I sat opposite him.

“He says he doesn't intend to take you away.””

Caleb nodded.

“Okay.””

“He wants to apologize.””

Caleb looked down.

“I don't know if I'm ready.””

“You don't have to be.””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, “Dad, I think Mom knew I wouldn't agree to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because she told me not to tell you about the apartment.””

I stared at him.

“What apartment?””

“The one she and Aunt Melissa were looking at. She showed me pictures on her phone.””

“Was it the house outside Savannah?””

“I think so.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“She said it would be a fresh start for all of us. But when I asked if Lily was coming, she changed the subject.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did she say?””

“She said Lily had her own family.””

I closed my eyes.

Then Caleb reached into his backpack.

“I found this in my room before we left.””

He placed a folded sheet of paper on the table.

It was a printed travel itinerary.

Two one-way tickets.

One for Vanessa.

One for Caleb.

The destination was Raleigh, North Carolina.

The departure date was three weeks away.

I looked at the itinerary.

“Did you know about this?””

Caleb shook his head.

“No. I found it under my school papers.””

I checked the booking details.

The tickets had been purchased five days earlier.

There was no return date.

I felt a chill move down my spine.

“Did your mother tell you about a trip?””

“No.””

I turned the paper over.

There was a handwritten note.

After everything is finalized, we'll finally be free.

The handwriting was Vanessa's.

I sat back.

Then Caleb said, “Dad, there's something I didn't tell you.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled out his phone and opened an old photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a house.

Beside her was Melissa.

And beside Melissa was a man I didn't recognize.

They were holding a sign in front of the property.

The sign read:

*SOLD — REED FAMILY HOLDINGS.*

Caleb zoomed in on the man's face.

“Do you know him?””

I stared.

I had seen him before.

Not in person.

On the property transfer paperwork.

His name was listed as the authorized representative of the company that owned the house.

And underneath his photograph was a name.

*Robert Hale.*

My former business partner.

The man who had once tried to sue me over a company I had founded.

The man who had disappeared from my life after a bitter legal dispute.

I looked at Caleb.

“Where did you get this?””

“Mom sent it to Aunt Melissa. I found it in a shared photo folder.””

I stared at the photograph again.

Then I understood why the plan involved more than my marriage.

This wasn't simply about Vanessa wanting a fresh start.

She had partnered with someone who already knew my financial history.

Someone who knew exactly how to make my house look like an asset he could use.

And someone who had a reason to hurt me.

My phone vibrated.

An email from David appeared.

Mark, I've identified the company representative connected to the property transaction. We need to discuss his relationship to your former business partner.

I read the message twice.

Then another email arrived.

This one contained a scanned document.

The subject line read:

*ORIGINAL LOAN GUARANTEE — SIGNATURE VERIFICATION REQUIRED.*

I opened it.

The document was dated eight months earlier.

It contained my name.

My address.

My property information.

And a signature that looked exactly like mine.

But there was one detail I recognized immediately.

May you like

The signature had been copied from a business contract I had signed years before I met Vanessa.

Someone had been collecting my old documents long before the vacation reservation was ever changed.
