Amused

Chapter 7: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to See

I read Daniel's message three times.

Then I looked at the photograph again.

The agreement was dated on our fourth wedding anniversary.

I remembered that evening.

Vanessa had arranged dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Savannah River. She wore a blue dress and gave me a watch engraved with our wedding date. We had taken photographs, shared dessert, and talked about taking the children to the mountains the following summer.

At least, that's what I remembered.

Apparently, while I was celebrating my marriage, my wife and her sister were arranging something very different.

“Caleb,” I said, “do you know what this document is?””

He shook his head.

“Daniel sent it to me five minutes ago. He said he wanted me to know the truth.””

I examined the photograph.

The agreement contained three sections.

The first described Daniel's proposed return to Caleb's life.

The second involved financial support from Vanessa and Melissa.

The third concerned custody arrangements.

But the final paragraph was what made my hands tremble.

It stated that Daniel would cooperate with a proposed change in Caleb's living arrangements in exchange for financial assistance and a percentage of the proceeds from a future property transaction.

There was no mention of love.

No mention of rebuilding a relationship.

Just money and custody.

“Did your father write this?”” I asked.

Caleb shook his head.

“I don't think so.””

“Have you spoken to him?””

He nodded.

“He called me earlier.””

“What did he say?””

Caleb hesitated.

“He apologized.””

I sat beside him.

“For what?””

“For agreeing to it.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Daniel's signature appeared on the last page.

So did Melissa's.

Vanessa's signature was beneath theirs.

I felt sick.

“Why would he agree to this?””

Caleb's voice became quiet.

“Because Mom told him he'd get to be my father again.””

I looked at him.

“What exactly did she promise?””

“That if he cooperated, he could have regular custody. She told him Dad was willing to let me spend more time with him.””

I stared at the screen.

“Did she say anything about money?””

Caleb nodded.

“She said he needed a fresh start. She told him the apartment was temporary and that the money would help him get settled.””

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa had taken money from our joint savings, used it to bring Daniel back into Caleb's life, and apparently promised him a financial benefit from a property transaction she had no authority to make.

All while telling me she was simply trying to make our family work.

I stood.

“I'm calling David.””

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

“Don't.””

I turned toward her.

“I'm done listening to you tell me what I can and can't do.””

“Mark, Daniel is lying.””

I held up the phone.

“His signature is on an agreement with yours.””

“He misunderstood the arrangement.””

“Then why did you promise him money from my house?””

She stared at me.

“I never promised him your house.””

“Then what does this mean?””

I pointed to the document.

She looked at it, then at Caleb.

“Your father is manipulating you.””

Caleb's expression hardened.

“He hasn't asked me for anything. You have.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I gave you everything.””

“No,” Caleb said.

“Dad gave me everything. You just told me he was supposed to.””

That sentence silenced her.

I stepped into the hallway and called David.

He answered immediately.

“Mark, I've been trying to reach you.””

“I have another document. An agreement involving Vanessa, Melissa, and Daniel.””

There was a pause.

“Send it to me.””

I forwarded the photograph.

He read it while we stayed on the call.

Then his voice became serious.

“Mark, do not contact the lender directly about the details until we have a clear record of the application. I want to handle that communication. We also need to preserve the original messages and establish how your signature was obtained.””

“Understood.””

“And I want you to know something. A document like this does not automatically create custody rights or transfer property. Its legal effect depends on the circumstances, the authenticity of the signatures, and whether anything was properly filed or recorded.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Could she actually have taken my house?””

“Not simply by preparing a document. But someone appears to have attempted to use your identity and property information in a financial transaction. That's serious.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“What about the children?””

“Keep them out of the financial dispute as much as possible. Don't pressure Caleb to speak to his biological father, and don't let anyone make arrangements for Lily without your involvement. We'll address the court document separately.””

I thanked him.

Before ending the call, he added, “One more thing. The lender's investigation department contacted me. They want to verify whether you authorized the application.””

“I didn't.””

“Good. We'll provide a formal statement.””

When I returned to the living room, Vanessa was sitting on the sofa.

She looked exhausted.

But I noticed something else.

Her handbag was open.

The document folder that had been on the kitchen counter was gone.

“Where are the papers?”” I asked.

She looked up.

“What papers?””

“The property documents.””

“I put them away.””

“Where?””

“In my bag.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because you're photographing everything and treating me like a criminal.””

I walked toward the counter.

“Put them back.””

She stood.

“No.””

“Vanessa, those documents concern my property.””

“Our marriage.””

“My property.””

Her eyes filled.

“You're really going to throw away four years because of a few mistakes?””

“A few?””

She pointed toward the hallway.

“Think about Caleb. Think about what this is doing to him.””

I looked at my stepson.

He was sitting beside Lily, helping her build a tower from wooden blocks.

“I'm thinking about him,” I replied.

“That's why I'm not pretending this is normal.””

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

Then she pulled out a second envelope.

“I was going to give you this after the loan was approved.””

I didn't take it.

“What is it?””

“An explanation.””

“Then read it.””

She opened the envelope and removed a handwritten letter.

It was addressed to me.

Her handwriting was neat and familiar.

The letter began by describing how lonely she had felt since we married.

She wrote about wanting a home where she felt valued, where she wasn't always second to Lily's needs.

She described the financial pressure she had experienced and claimed Melissa had convinced her that securing a separate property would provide stability.

Then came the sentence that changed the way I understood the entire arrangement.

I believed that once Lily and Caleb were spending more time with their biological families, you and I could finally begin our own life together.

I lowered the letter.

“You thought getting rid of both children would give us a marriage?””

She started crying.

“I didn't mean getting rid of them.””

“What did you mean?””

“Temporary arrangements.””

“For how long?””

“I don't know.””

“Who decided where they would live?””

“Melissa helped.””

I shook my head.

“Your sister isn't their parent.””

Vanessa sat down.

“I know.””

“Then why did you give her that much control?””

She didn't answer.

I looked toward Caleb.

He was still helping Lily build her tower.

She placed a wooden block on top.

It fell.

Caleb laughed.

Lily laughed, too.

For a few seconds, they looked like ordinary siblings enjoying an ordinary afternoon.

Then Lily noticed us watching.

Her smile faded.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“I'm taking the children to my sister's house tonight.””

She immediately stood.

“No. You can't take them away.””

“I'm taking them somewhere they feel safe while we sort this out.””

“Caleb is my son!””

“And he has told you he doesn't want to live with Daniel.””

She looked at him.

“Caleb, tell your father you want to stay here.””

Caleb didn't answer.

“Caleb!””

He finally looked up.

“I want to stay with Dad.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

I went upstairs and packed two small bags.

Lily insisted on bringing Mr. Buttons, her yellow swimsuit, and the picture she had drawn for Vanessa's birthday.

Caleb packed his laptop, basketball shoes, and a few clothes.

When we came downstairs, Vanessa was standing beside the front door.

“Mark, please don't do this.””

I placed the bags beside the wall.

“We need space.””

“You're making me look like a monster.””

I looked at her.

“No. I'm letting the children tell me how they've been feeling.””

She looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, you don't want to leave, do you?””

Lily held my hand.

“I want to be with Daddy.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I've taken care of you.””

Lily looked down.

Then she said something so quietly that I almost didn't hear it.

“You said I was temporary.””

Vanessa went completely still.

I looked at my daughter.

“What?””

Lily swallowed.

“Last month, when you were on the phone with Aunt Melissa, you said I was only supposed to be here until the other house was ready.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What other house?””

She shook her head.

“She's confused.””

Lily clutched Mr. Buttons.

“I heard you say it.””

I crouched.

“Sweetheart, what other house?””

She pointed toward Vanessa's handbag.

“The one Aunt Melissa showed you pictures of.””

I stood slowly.

“Vanessa, what house?””

She didn't answer.

Then Caleb's phone vibrated.

He checked it.

His expression changed immediately.

“Dad.””

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

Daniel had sent another message.

Your wife and her sister already bought a property. It's not in their names. I think they planned to move both of you there after the loan went through.

I read the message.

Then another one appeared.

Mark, I need to tell you something else. I was never supposed to receive the full twenty-seven thousand dollars. Melissa told Vanessa the rest would be transferred after the house loan was approved.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely pale.

“Is there another house?”” I asked.

She said nothing.

I took one step toward her.

“Vanessa, where were you planning to move my children?””

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“It's not what you think.””

But I was beginning to understand.

May you like

The beach trip had never been the real plan.

It was simply the first time she had allowed me to see it.
