Amused

Chapter 7: The Betrayal Nobody Saw

The university meeting was scheduled for the next morning.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my dress on the floor.

I saw Rachel’s face.

I saw Mia holding those scissors.

But more than anything, I kept thinking about one question.

How long had they been planning this?

My father drove me to campus.

Neither of us spoke much.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was heavy.

Like both of us were afraid of what we would discover.

When we arrived, we were taken into a conference room.

Three people were waiting.

The admissions director.

A legal representative.

And a woman from financial aid.

The admissions director stood.

“Emma, thank you for coming.””

I sat down.

My hands were folded tightly in my lap.

“What did you find?””

The woman from financial aid opened a file.

“We discovered several attempts to interfere with your enrollment.””

My stomach tightened.

“By Rachel?””

She nodded.

“But that’s not the only thing.””

My father looked confused.

“What else?””

The admissions director placed another document on the table.

“This.””

I picked it up.

It was an email.

But this time, it wasn’t from Rachel.

It was from Mia.

My heart sank.

The email said:

*I need help changing my records. My sister won’t share anything with me.*

I looked up.

“She wrote this?””

The legal representative nodded.

“She contacted someone online who claimed they could help alter academic records.””

My father closed his eyes.

Mia had gone further than we knew.

The admissions director continued.

“She believed if Emma’s acceptance was questioned, there would be another opening.””

I stared at the paper.

“She wanted my place.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no other explanation.

The meeting lasted almost two hours.

Every piece of information felt like another piece of my life being taken apart.

But then something unexpected happened.

The admissions director looked at me.

“Emma, there is something else you should know.””

I waited.

“Your application was reviewed again after these concerns came up.””

My heart dropped.

“Am I losing my place?””

“No.””

I blinked.

“No?””

She smiled slightly.

“Actually, the opposite.””

She turned the file around.

“We noticed something during the review.””

I looked down.

My essay.

The one I had written at midnight after working a ten-hour shift.

The one I almost didn’t submit because I thought it wasn’t good enough.

“We read your personal statement again.””

She smiled.

“And we realized something.””

“What?””

“You weren’t accepted because of your grades alone.””

I swallowed.

“You were accepted because of your story.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly, after everything, those words meant more than I expected.

I had spent years believing I had to prove I deserved good things.

But maybe I already had.

When we left the building, my father stopped outside.

“Emma.””

I turned.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For making you feel like you had to fight alone.””

That hurt.

Because it was true.

But I also saw the sadness in his eyes.

So I said the only honest thing.

“I needed you to notice.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time in days, I hugged him.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

But because at least now, we were standing on the same side.

When we got home, the house was strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked inside.

“Mia?””

No answer.

My father checked the kitchen.

Nothing.

Then he saw the envelope sitting on the table.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My hands trembled as I read the first line.

*Emma, I know you’ll never forgive me, but you need to know what Mom did after you left for school today.*

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, another sound came from upstairs.

A drawer opening.

Then footsteps.

Someone was still in the house.

My father moved toward the stairs.

“Mia?””

No response.

He walked up slowly.

I followed behind him.

When he opened her bedroom door…

May you like

We saw what she had been hiding.

And it was something even my father didn’t expect.
