Amused

Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Betrayal

Mia walked away before I could stop her.

I followed her into the empty hallway.

“Mia!””

She stopped.

Slowly.

“What?””

I stared at her.

“What did you do?””

She smiled again.

But this time, it looked forced.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

She leaned against the wall.

“Fine.””

The hallway was silent except for the distant sound of graduation celebrations.

“You think Dad saved you.””

I said nothing.

“He didn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Mia laughed softly.

“It means you’re still the same Emma.””

I hated that she said my name like it was an insult.

“Always believing people will do the right thing.””

I stepped closer.

“What did you submit?””

She looked at me.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I didn’t just use your name for scholarships.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

Before she answered, my father’s voice echoed from behind us.

“Mia.””

She turned.

My father stood at the end of the hallway.

His face was unreadable.

But he wasn’t alone.

Behind him was a woman holding a folder.

A woman I recognized.

The school counselor.

My father walked toward us.

“Tell Emma the truth.””

Mia’s confidence disappeared.

“Dad…”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Today is the last day you get to lie.””

The counselor opened the folder.

“Emma, there are several documents here that require your attention.””

I looked at the papers.

My name was everywhere.

My signature.

My information.

But something was wrong.

The signatures looked almost identical.

Almost.

Then I noticed the date.

My hands went cold.

“These were submitted before I turned eighteen.””

My father nodded.

“That’s why this is more serious than I thought.””

Mia looked between us.

“I can explain.””

My father stared at her.

“You have five seconds.””

She looked angry again.

“You never loved me like you loved her.””

Rachel appeared behind her.

“Mia!””

But Mia kept going.

“Everything Emma did was praised. Everything I did was ignored.””

I looked at her.

“So you ruined my future?””

Her face hardened.

“No.””

She whispered:

“I was trying to take what should have been mine.””

The counselor opened another file.

“There is one more issue.””

Everyone looked at her.

She handed my father a document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Shock.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He folded the paper slowly.

Then he looked at Mia.

“Mia…”

She started crying.

Not fake this time.

Real tears.

Because she knew what he had just discovered.

My father turned to me.

And said the words I never expected to hear.

“Emma, your stepsister didn’t just destroy your dress.””

A pause.

“She tried to destroy your entire future.””

He handed me the document.

I looked down.

And saw a name written at the bottom.

A name that changed everything.

Because it wasn’t Mia’s.

May you like

It was someone else’s.

Someone who had been helping her from the beginning.
