Chapter 4: The Graduation Day Nobody Expected
The ceremony was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
Instead, I walked into the auditorium carrying a secret that felt heavier than the graduation gown on my shoulders.
My father had spent the entire morning making phone calls.
Lawyers.
The scholarship office.
The school administration.
Every time he ended a call, his face became more serious.
I wanted answers.
But I also wanted one normal moment.
Just one.
When I arrived at school, my classmates surrounded me.
“Emma! You look amazing!””
I forced a smile.
Nobody knew my dress had been destroyed.
Nobody knew my family was breaking apart behind closed doors.
I wore a simple backup dress my father bought that morning.
It was beautiful.
But it wasn’t the dress I dreamed about.
My friend Lily noticed immediately.
“Are you okay?””
I looked at her.
“Yeah.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“You’re a terrible liar.””
I almost smiled.
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message from my father.
*Don’t leave school after graduation. I need you to be there when I arrive.*
I frowned.
That was not normal.
I typed back:
*Why?*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
No answer.
During the ceremony, I sat in my seat listening to names being called.
One by one.
Families cheered.
Cameras flashed.
People cried.
Then my name was announced.
“Emma Carter.””
The crowd applauded.
I walked across the stage.
For a few seconds, everything disappeared.
The stress.
The betrayal.
The pain.
I held my diploma.
And I remembered every night I studied when I wanted to quit.
Every morning I woke up early for work.
Every dollar I saved.
I had earned this.
When I returned to my seat, my phone buzzed again.
This time, it was not my father.
It was an unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
Attached was a screenshot.
A scholarship application.
My name.
My signature.
My personal information.
But I had never seen it before.
Below it was a message.
*You need to know what your sister really did.*
My hands trembled.
I looked around.
Then another message appeared.
*Your father doesn’t know everything yet.*
I stood up.
My teacher looked confused.
“Emma?””
I ignored her.
I walked outside the auditorium.
And there she was.
Mia.
Standing near the entrance.
Watching me.
Smiling.
“You got the message.””
I froze.
“Mia.””
She tilted her head.
“You really thought Dad had figured everything out?””
My heart raced.
“What are you talking about?””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what I did.””
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This one from my father.
*Emma, do not trust anything Mia says. I’m on my way.*
I looked back at Mia.
Her smile disappeared.
Because she saw my father’s name on the screen.
And for the first time…
She looked worried.

Then she whispered:
“Your father found out about the wrong thing.””
