Chapter 4: Declared Unfit to Be His Daughter
“After the wedding, Tiffany plans to have Ariana declared mentally unstable and legally unfit to make decisions for herself.””
Denise's words landed like a gunshot.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
My father stood between Tiffany and the staircase, his hand still wrapped around her arm. I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen. Somewhere outside, a car passed along the street, its headlights sliding across the living room curtains.
Then Dad slowly released Tiffany.
“What did you just say?””
Denise's face crumpled.
“You heard me, Khalil.””
Tiffany immediately straightened her blouse.
“This is a complete fabrication. Denise is upset, and she's trying to destroy my marriage because she resents me.””
“Then explain what she means,” Dad demanded.
“There is nothing to explain!””
“Why would she say something so specific?””
“Because she's a liar!””
Denise shook her head.
“I have the documents, Tiffany.””
That stopped her.
It was the smallest reaction. A twitch near her mouth. A brief widening of her eyes.
But I saw it.
So did my father.
“What documents?”” he asked.
Denise hesitated before answering.
“The paperwork Tiffany asked me to organize last month. She told me they were related to the wedding and the household accounts. But when I looked through them, I found forms concerning Ariana's guardianship and medical evaluations.””
Dad's face turned pale.
“Guardianship?””
Tiffany folded her arms.
“She is a minor, Khalil. Of course there are guardianship documents.””
“Not documents declaring her mentally unstable.””
“She has been behaving erratically!””
I stared at her.
“I'm standing right here.””
She pointed at me.
“Look at her! The crying, the accusations, the secret recordings. Does that seem normal to you?””
Dad stepped forward.
“Don't use her fear as evidence against her.””
Tiffany's expression hardened.
“I am trying to protect this family.””
“No,” Denise whispered.
“You're trying to control it.””
Tiffany whipped around.
“Do you want to lose everything you've been given?””
Denise flinched, but she didn't back down.
“I've already lost too much by keeping quiet.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Where are these documents?””
“In the study. In a folder inside the bottom drawer of Tiffany's desk.””
Tiffany immediately moved toward the staircase.
Dad blocked her.
“Don't.””
“You cannot order me around like a criminal!””
“Then stop behaving like someone who has something to hide.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
It was astonishing how quickly she could manufacture them. One moment she looked ready to tear the house apart; the next, her lower lip trembled and her voice became soft.
“Khalil, please. I know you're angry. I know Ariana has convinced you that I'm some kind of monster.
But think about what you're doing. Our wedding is three weeks away. Everyone we love is expecting us to start our life together.””
“My daughter is afraid to live in her own home.””
“Because she refuses to accept me!””
“No. Because you have threatened to throw her out.””
Tiffany looked at me.
“You have always wanted this, haven't you? You wanted him all to yourself. You couldn't stand the thought of another woman making him happy.””
I felt the old instinct to defend myself.
To explain that I'd never wanted her gone, that I'd spent years trying to make things work, that I had been happy when Dad first told me he was in love again.
But I stopped.
I didn't need to convince Tiffany of anything.
I needed my father to see what she was doing.
“I wanted you to be kind to me,” I said.
“That's all.””
For a moment, something flickered across her face.
Then she laughed bitterly.
“Kindness? I've given you everything.””
“You told me I didn't belong here.””
“You were disrespectful!””
“You broke Mom's picture.””
“I dropped it accidentally!””
“You told me my existence was ruining your marriage.””
“That was a figure of speech!””
“Then why did you say the same thing to Denise?””
Silence.
Tiffany's eyes darted toward Denise.
My father noticed.
“Did you tell Denise that Ariana needed to be removed from the family?””
Tiffany said nothing.
“Answer me.””
She lifted her chin.
“I told her that things would be easier after the wedding. I was speaking about the transition. That's all.””
Denise let out a disbelieving laugh.
“You told me Ariana would be sent away before the honeymoon ended.””
Dad went utterly still.
“The honeymoon?””
Denise nodded.
“You said once the marriage was finalized, you'd have enough authority in the household to make sure Ariana couldn't interfere with your plans anymore.””
Dad stared at his fiancée.
“What plans?””
Tiffany looked away.
And suddenly, I remembered something.
Two weeks earlier, I'd walked past the study and heard her talking on the phone. She'd been speaking in a low voice, but one sentence had carried into the hallway.
Once Khalil signs everything, the girl won't be a problem.
At the time, I'd assumed she meant the wedding arrangements.
Now the memory returned with a sickening clarity.
“Dad,” I whispered.
He turned toward me.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
“I heard her talking on the phone. She said something about you signing everything.””
Tiffany's face went white.
Dad stared at her.
“What was I supposed to sign?””
She shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
“What was I supposed to sign, Tiffany?””
She looked toward the front door as if calculating whether she could leave without answering.
Dad took his phone from his pocket.
“I'm calling my attorney.””
“No!””
The word escaped her before she could stop it.
Dad lowered the phone.
“Why not?””
“Because you're overreacting!””
“Then you should have nothing to fear from an attorney.””
“You can't destroy our relationship over a child's tantrum!””
“Watch me.””
Tiffany recoiled as if he'd struck her.
I had never heard my father speak with such finality.
He dialed a number and walked toward the dining room, speaking quietly as someone answered. I couldn't hear every word, but I caught enough.
“It's Khalil. I need you to review some documents before I sign anything related to my upcoming marriage. And I need you to tell me exactly what legal options exist to protect my daughter.””
Tiffany sank onto the couch.
For the first time, she looked less like a woman who controlled the house and more like someone watching her carefully constructed world collapse.
Denise sat beside me on the bottom stair.
“I should have told you,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Why didn't you?””
She stared at her hands.
“Because Tiffany made me believe that speaking up would make everything worse. She told me your father would blame me for creating problems, and she promised that once the wedding was over, the house would finally be peaceful.””
“Peaceful for who?””
Denise closed her eyes.
“For her.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
I wanted to be angry with Denise. Part of me was angry. She had watched me cry.
She had heard Tiffany threaten me. And she'd chosen silence.
But I also understood fear.
I had lived inside it for months.
“Do you really have the documents?”” I asked.
She nodded.
“Every page.””
Before I could ask another question, Dad returned from the dining room.
His expression was grim.
“My attorney is coming here tonight.””
Tiffany stood so quickly that the couch cushion sprang back into place.
“You are not bringing lawyers into my home!””
Dad looked at her.
“It's my home, Tiffany. And Ariana's.””
She stared at him, breathing hard.
Then she reached for her purse.
“If you want to humiliate me, fine. But I'm not staying here to be interrogated.””
Dad moved aside.
“You're free to leave.””
Tiffany stopped.
She had clearly expected him to beg her to stay.
Instead, he walked toward my suitcase and began picking up the clothes she'd thrown across the floor.
“Where are you going?”” she demanded.
“I'm helping my daughter unpack.””
Her face twisted.
“You'll regret this.””
Dad didn't look up.
“Perhaps. But I will never regret protecting my child.””
Tiffany stared at him for several seconds.
Then she marched toward the staircase, climbed to the second floor, and slammed the bedroom door.
The sound shook the picture frames.
I stood motionless.
Dad set my folded shirt on the sofa and turned toward me.
“Come here.””
I walked into his arms.
He held me for a long time, his chin resting against the top of my head.
“I should have listened,” he whispered.
“I should have seen what was happening.””
I pressed my face against his chest.
“I kept thinking you would believe her.””
“I know.””
“I didn't want you to lose someone you loved because of me.””
Dad pulled back and looked directly into my eyes.
“You were never responsible for protecting me from the truth, Ariana. That was my job.””
For the first time that night, I felt a small piece of the fear leave my body.
Then Denise stood abruptly.
“There's something else you need to know.””
Dad closed his eyes for a moment.
“Of course there is.””
Denise looked toward the ceiling, where Tiffany was moving around the bedroom above us.
“The guardianship papers aren't the only documents in that desk.””
“What else is there?””
Denise swallowed.
“A financial agreement. Tiffany has been preparing it for weeks.””
Dad frowned.
“What kind of financial agreement?””
She looked at me before answering.
“One that gives Tiffany control over Ariana's inheritance if anything happens to you.””
My father's arms tightened around me.
“Anything happens to me?””
Denise nodded.
“And Khalil, the document isn't just a proposal. There's already a signature on it.””
Dad's face went pale.
“Whose signature?””
May you like
Denise looked him directly in the eyes.
“Yours.””
