Amused

Chapter 2: The Perfect Wife's Performance

“Oh, Khalil! Thank God you're home.””

Tiffany moved faster than I'd ever seen her move.

One second, she was standing beside my suitcase like an executioner guarding a condemned prisoner. The next, she was rushing toward my father with tears gathering in her eyes.

She reached for his arm.

He stepped away.

“Tiffany, don't touch me yet.””

Her hands fell to her sides.

“But, darling, you don't understand. Ariana has been completely out of control.””

Dad didn't answer.

He bent down, picked up one of my shirts from the floor, and looked at the suitcase near the door.

“Why are her things packed?””

Tiffany pressed a trembling hand to her chest.

“Because she threatened me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She turned toward me with an expression of wounded disbelief.

“Don't start again, Ariana. You've done enough for one evening.””

Dad looked between us.

“Someone explain what's happening. Now.””

Tiffany seized the opportunity.

“I came downstairs to ask Ariana whether she'd finished her homework. She immediately started screaming at me about the wedding. She said she wouldn't allow us to get married.””

“That is not what happened!”” I protested.

Dad raised one hand.

“Let her finish.””

I fell silent, though my heart hammered against my ribs.

Tiffany noticed.

She always noticed when I became afraid.

“She started throwing things,” Tiffany continued.

“She knocked over the bowl, screamed that she hated me, and threatened to destroy the house if you went through with the wedding.””

Dad glanced at the shattered ceramic pieces.

“Did you throw this, Ariana?””

“No.””

Tiffany released a soft, broken sob.

“See? This is what I live with every time you're away.””

I stared at her.

Every time.

She'd used those words without even realizing what she'd admitted.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“Tiffany, I was supposed to arrive tomorrow morning. Why didn't you tell me there was a problem?””

“Because I didn't want to upset you while you were traveling. I thought I could handle it privately.””

“By packing my daughter's suitcase?””

“She needs consequences, Khalil!””

“Consequences for what?””

Tiffany looked at me, and I saw the warning in her eyes.

It was the same look she'd given me when she slapped me.

The same look she'd given me when she told me to apologize for things I hadn't done.

Don't you dare.

I had obeyed that look for years.

Not tonight.

“She told me to leave,” I said.

Dad turned toward me.

“What?””

“She said I had forty minutes to pack my things and get out before you came home.””

Tiffany threw up her hands.

“That's ridiculous!””

“She said I didn't belong here anymore.””

“I said you couldn't keep treating me with disrespect!””

“You grabbed my wrist!””

“Because you were trying to attack me!””

I pulled my sleeve back.

The red marks were already becoming darker.

Dad saw them.

His jaw tightened.

“Did she do that to you?””

Tiffany shook her head furiously.

“She grabbed me first!””

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

This was the moment I had feared.

The moment when Dad would have to choose which version of reality he believed.

For months, I'd watched Tiffany cry, apologize, and promise to change. I'd watched Dad's expression soften as he convinced himself that love could fix whatever was happening between us.

But now he was looking at my wrist.

At my clothes.

At the photograph lying broken on the floor.

And for once, he wasn't looking away.

“Both of you,” he said, his voice low, “stop talking.””

The room fell silent.

Dad placed his suitcase on the floor and loosened his tie.

“Tiffany, I want to know why my daughter is standing here with her belongings packed.””

“I just explained—”

“No. You explained why you think she's difficult. You haven't explained why you were forcing her out of this house.””

Tiffany's lips parted.

For a moment, she seemed unable to find the right words.

Then she began to cry harder.

“I can't believe you're doing this to me.””

Dad stared at her.

“Doing what?””

“Taking her side without even asking what happened!””

“I'm asking you right now.””

“And you aren't listening!””

She turned away, pressing her fingers against her eyes.

I watched her shoulders shake.

It looked convincing.

It always did.

But this time, I remembered the recording on my phone.

I remembered her laughing while she broke my photograph.

I remembered her telling me that my existence was enough to ruin her happiness.

I remembered the way she'd looked at my suitcase.

Not with anger.

With satisfaction.

“Dad,” I said, “I need you to listen to me before you decide anything.””

He turned toward me.

“I'm listening, sweetheart.””

The word nearly broke me.

He hadn't called me sweetheart in months.

I took a shaky breath.

“This isn't the first time she's done this.””

Tiffany's crying stopped.

Dad frowned.

“What do you mean?””

I glanced at my stepmother.

She stood perfectly still, her eyes fixed on mine.

“Every time you leave town, she does something like this,” I said.

“Sometimes she takes my phone. Sometimes she locks me out of rooms. Sometimes she tells me I'm going to be sent away if I don't do exactly what she wants.””

Dad's expression changed.

“How long has this been happening?””

“Since before Christmas.””

Tiffany laughed sharply.

“Oh, this is unbelievable.””

I continued before she could interrupt.

“She tells me not to bother you because you're busy. She says I'm going to destroy your marriage if I tell you what she's doing. And when you come home, she acts like she's the perfect stepmother.””

Dad turned slowly toward Tiffany.

“Is any of that true?””

“Absolutely not!””

“She made me apologize for things I didn't do,” I said.

“She told me you'd stop loving me if I made trouble for her.””

Tiffany's face hardened.

“That's a disgusting lie.””

I reached into my hoodie pocket.

Her eyes followed my hand.

For the first time, she looked genuinely alarmed.

I pulled out my phone.

“Then you won't mind listening to this.””

Dad stared at the device.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

Tiffany lunged toward me.

“Give me that!””

Dad moved between us so quickly that she nearly collided with him.

“Don't you dare touch her.””

The words rang through the living room.

Tiffany recoiled.

I had never seen my father speak to her like that.

Not once.

He turned toward me.

“Play it.””

My fingers trembled as I opened the recording.

The first few seconds contained the sound of footsteps and the scrape of a chair.

Then Tiffany's voice filled the room.

“Your father doesn't need to know everything that happens in this house, Ariana. He's busy making a future for us.””

A pause.

Then my own voice.

“But you said I could go to the school dance.””

Tiffany's reply came cold and clear.

“And I changed my mind. You don't get to embarrass me by running around with your friends while I'm trying to prepare for my wedding.””

Another pause.

“If you tell Khalil, I'll make sure he knows you're the reason I'm miserable. Do you understand?””

Dad's face drained of color.

The recording continued.

“One day, sweetheart, you'll realize how much better this family will be when you're no longer in the middle of it.””

Then the file ended.

Nobody moved.

The clock ticked once.

Twice.

Dad slowly turned toward Tiffany.

“Tell me that isn't your voice.””

Tiffany opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Tell me,” he repeated, “that I didn't just hear my wife threatening my daughter.””

She swallowed.

“I was frustrated.””

“You told her to hide things from me.””

“She misunderstood.””

“You told her this family would be better without her.””

“I didn't mean it that way!””

Dad looked at me.

I was crying now, though I hadn't realized it until a tear reached my chin.

He took a step toward me, then stopped, as if he were afraid that touching me might somehow make everything worse.

“Ariana,” he whispered, “why didn't you tell me?””

I laughed once, bitterly.

“Tell you what, Dad? That the woman you love hates me?””

His face crumpled.

“I don't care if you like her,” he said.

“I care if you're safe.””

“Then why did you never notice?””

He flinched.

I immediately regretted the question, but it was too late.

For months, I'd wanted him to ask me that.

Now that he had, I couldn't pretend the answer was simple.

“I tried to tell you,” I continued.

“Every time, she said I was jealous. You believed her because she cried, and I stopped talking because I didn't want you to think I was trying to ruin your happiness.””

Dad's eyes shone.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

He reached for me.

This time, I let him pull me into his arms.

I buried my face against his shirt and cried like I had when I was little, when nightmares sent me running into his bedroom.

He held me tightly.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

“I'm so sorry.””

Behind him, Tiffany made a small, disbelieving sound.

“So that's it?”” she demanded.

“One recording, and suddenly I'm a monster?””

Dad didn't release me.

“No. One recording is enough to make me ask what else you've been hiding.””

Tiffany's face went pale.

He looked toward the staircase.

“Where's Denise?””

The question surprised me.

Denise was Tiffany's cousin and had been staying with us for six months to help with the wedding preparations. She handled the household schedule, the caterers, and most of Tiffany's errands.

She was also the only adult in the house who had ever quietly slipped me a plate of food when Tiffany said I'd missed dinner.

I'd thought she simply felt sorry for me.

I hadn't realized she knew anything.

“Denise is upstairs,” Tiffany said quickly.

“There's no reason to involve her.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“Then why do you look frightened?””

Tiffany forced a laugh.

“I'm not frightened. I'm exhausted. I have spent months trying to hold this family together while Ariana sabotages everything.””

Dad turned toward the staircase.

“Denise! Come downstairs, please.””

A door opened above us.

Footsteps crossed the landing.

Then Denise appeared at the top of the stairs, gripping the banister so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

Finally, her gaze settled on Tiffany.

“I think,” Denise said, her voice trembling, “it's time you heard the truth.””

May you like

Tiffany's face went completely white.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the things she'd done to me were only a small part of what she'd been hiding.
