Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Lies
The police officer placed the evidence bag on the table.
Inside was the broken necklace pendant.
Empty.
The memory card was gone.
Vanessa had taken the one thing Emma had hidden.
The one thing that could explain everything.
But she had made one mistake.
She had assumed nobody would look deeper.
Daniel sat across from the officer.
His face was exhausted.
“Can you track where the photo came from?””
The officer shook his head.
“Not immediately.””
“Then what can we do?””
“We find out who sent it.””
Everyone looked at Ethan.
Because he was the one receiving the messages.
But Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t know who it is.””
The officer studied him.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
His voice was firm.
“For the first time in months, I’m telling the truth.””
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Because while Ethan had been trapped between loyalty and fear, Lily had been standing accused.
A child.
A child who had cried because an adult decided she was the easiest person to blame.
That afternoon, Vanessa finally agreed to meet us.
At first, I thought she would apologize.
I was wrong.
She sat across from us at the café with perfect makeup and a calm expression.
Like nothing had happened.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa sighed.
“I knew you would ask that.””
“No. You don’t understand.””
His voice lowered.
“You destroyed Lily.””
For the first time, her expression flickered.
“I never meant to hurt her.””
“You pointed at my daughter and called her a thief.””
Vanessa looked away.
“She was nearby.””
My hands tightened.
“Nearby?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“I needed someone to blame.””
The honesty was worse than a lie.
Daniel stared at her.
“You admit it?””
Vanessa leaned back.
“I admit I panicked.””
“About what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel placed the photo of the broken pendant on the table.
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You know about this.””
Vanessa looked at it.
Then at him.
“I wanted to protect this family.””
I almost laughed.
“By destroying it?””
She ignored me.
“Emma left behind problems.””
“Emma left behind a daughter,” Daniel said.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“She left behind secrets.””
“What secrets?””
Vanessa looked around the café.
Then lowered her voice.
“Your wife wasn’t as innocent as you think.””
Daniel stood immediately.
“You don’t get to use her name to defend yourself.””
But Vanessa didn’t stop.
“She knew her father was involved with illegal loans.””
The words hit him.
“What?””
“She knew.””
Vanessa’s eyes were cold.
“And she hid it.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked completely lost.
Because this wasn’t just about Vanessa anymore.
This was about the woman he had loved.
The woman who had died.
The woman who had left behind questions.
Vanessa continued.
“I found documents.””
“Where?””
“In the house.””
“What documents?””
She smiled slightly.
“The ones Emma hid.””
Daniel sat back down.
“Where are they?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then you need to know something.””
She leaned forward.
“Emma wasn’t hiding the truth from you.””
A pause.
“She was hiding it from someone else.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
And whispered:
“Your father.””
Daniel froze.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because he wasn’t the only person involved.””
The café suddenly felt silent.
“Who else?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Her phone rang.
She glanced at it.
And for the first time, real fear appeared in her eyes.
She stood.
“I have to go.””
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Who called?””
She looked at him.
Then whispered:
“Someone who knows where the memory card is.””
She pulled away.
And walked out.
But she left her phone behind.
And when it lit up again…
The caller name appeared on the screen.
May you like
A name none of us expected.
Emma.
