Chapter 7: The Letter From Mommy
Daniel refused to open the envelope that night.
Not because he didn’t want answers.
Because he was afraid of them.
I understood.
Sometimes the truth is a door.
And once you open it, you can never go back to the room you were living in before.
The next morning, we sat at the kitchen table.
The envelope was between us.
Lily was eating cereal quietly, unaware of the storm around her.
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know if I’m ready.””
I reached across the table.
“Whatever is inside, we’ll handle it.””
He nodded.
Then he opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
Even after years, I recognized it.
Emma’s handwriting.
Daniel’s hands began shaking.
“No…”
He whispered the word like a prayer.
He unfolded the paper.
And started reading.
Daniel,
If you’re reading this, something happened that made you find this.
I wanted to tell you the truth myself, but I was afraid.
Daniel stopped.
His breathing changed.
I watched his eyes move across the page.
Then he continued.
Before I became sick, I discovered something about my family. Something I didn’t know how to fix.
He looked up.
“What family?””
I didn’t answer.
He kept reading.
I found out my father had left behind a financial mess. Debts I never knew about. People who were looking for payment.
Daniel lowered the letter.
Vanessa’s words suddenly made sense.
The “old debt.””
But why did she have Emma’s letter?
Daniel continued.
I didn’t want you to worry. I knew you would try to solve everything yourself.
His eyes filled.
But there is something more important.
He turned the page.
Then he froze.
“What?””
He didn’t respond.
“Daniel?””
He handed me the letter.
The next paragraph made my heart stop.
The necklace I gave Lily contains something hidden inside the pendant.
I looked up.
The necklace.
The one Vanessa sold.
I placed something inside because I was afraid someone might try to take it.
My hands went cold.
“What was inside?””
Daniel read the final lines.
Proof.
Proof that my father’s debts were not his fault.
Proof that someone close to him was responsible.
The room went silent.
Someone close.
Someone.
Daniel looked toward the hallway where Vanessa had disappeared.
“No.””
But the realization was already there.
I looked at him.
“Daniel…”
He shook his head.
“Vanessa couldn’t have known.””
But then Ethan walked in.
He looked at the letter.
And his face changed.
“You found it.””
Daniel turned.
“What did you just say?””
Ethan froze.
“I…”
“You knew about this?””
Ethan looked terrified.
“I knew Mom was looking for something.””
“What something?””
“The necklace.””
Daniel stood.
“Explain.””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“Months ago, I heard Mom arguing with someone on the phone.””
“Who?””
“She said she needed to find Emma’s necklace before Dad discovered what was inside.””
My heart sank.
Daniel closed his eyes.
All the pieces were connecting.
The missing jewelry.
The accusation against Lily.
The pawn shop.
The hidden pendant.
Vanessa hadn’t sold the necklace because she wanted money.
She sold it because she wanted whatever was inside.
But there was one problem.
The pawn shop receipt showed the necklace was sold.
Meaning Vanessa had the necklace.
Meaning she had already opened it.
“Where is the pendant?”” Daniel asked.
Ethan looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned white.
“What?””
He slowly handed the phone to Daniel.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
This time, there was a photo attached.
A close-up photo.
Of the necklace pendant.
Broken open.
And beside it was a small memory card.
Underneath the image were six words.
“She found what Emma hid.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
“She didn’t destroy the evidence.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“She hid it.””
