Chapter 6: The Secret Ethan Carried
Ethan didn’t look like someone who had been caught.
He looked like someone who had been carrying a weight for too long.
The moment Daniel finished reading the message, his son’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Ethan,” Daniel said quietly.
My stepson looked toward the hallway.
For a second, I thought he might run.
“Dad…”
“What happened at the pawn shop?””
Ethan swallowed.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
The room felt painfully small.
Lily was upstairs with my sister, who had come over to keep her away from the chaos.
That was the only reason I could breathe.
Because I didn’t know what Ethan was about to say.
I didn’t know if he had helped Vanessa.
Or if he had been protecting her.
Or if there was something even worse.
Ethan sat down slowly.
“I didn’t know Mom was selling the necklace at first.””
Daniel remained standing.
“But you were there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ethan looked down at his hands.
“Because I followed her.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“You followed your own mother?””
Ethan nodded.
“Because she was acting strange.””
He took a deep breath.
“A few weeks ago, I found her going through Dad’s office.””
Daniel frowned.
“When?””
“After dinner. She thought nobody was home.””
“And?””
“I asked what she was doing.””
Ethan looked toward the stairs.
“She told me she was looking for old paperwork.””
I crossed my arms.
“But she wasn’t.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“She was looking through the drawers.””
Daniel walked closer.
“What did she take?””
“I don’t know.””
His voice cracked.
“But after that, things started disappearing.””
The room went quiet.
Ethan wiped his eyes quickly.
“I didn’t tell you because…”
He stopped.
“Because what?””
“Because I thought it was my fault.””
Daniel’s expression softened slightly.
“Why would you think that?””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Because Mom told me she was struggling.””
He laughed bitterly.
“She said nobody cared about her anymore. She said after you married again, she was treated like a stranger in her own family.””
“That doesn’t give her the right to steal,” Daniel said.
“I know.””
Ethan’s voice became quieter.
“But she’s still my mom.””
That sentence hung in the air.
Because everyone understood it.
Love could exist beside disappointment.
You could be hurt by someone and still wish they would change.
Ethan pulled out his phone.
“There’s something else.””
He unlocked it.
“I recorded some conversations.””
Vanessa’s face flashed through my mind.
“What kind of conversations?””
Ethan hesitated.
“The ones where Mom talked about money.””
Daniel took the phone.
The first recording played.
Vanessa’s voice filled the kitchen.
“I only need enough to fix this one problem.””
A man answered.
“How much?””
“Enough to cover what I owe.””
The recording ended.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Who was she talking to?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why didn’t you show me?””
“Because she found out.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“She found the recordings.””
The room froze.
“When?”” Daniel asked.
“Yesterday.””
“And?””
“She threatened me.””
Daniel’s eyes darkened.
“What did she say?””
Ethan looked away.
“She said if I told you anything, she would tell everyone that I was the one who stole the jewelry.””
I felt sick.
“She was going to blame you?””
Ethan nodded.
“She said nobody would believe me because I already had a history of getting into trouble.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, I saw the pain on his face.
Not just anger.
Regret.
Because he realized his son had been afraid to come to him.
“Ethan,” Daniel said softly, “why didn’t you trust me?””
His son looked up.
“Because every time I tried to tell you something about Mom, you said she was just going through a hard time.””
Daniel had no response.
Because it was true.
He had defended Vanessa.
He had explained away every warning sign.
Until she pointed at a seven-year-old girl.
A small sound came from behind us.
A floorboard.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Nobody knew how long she had been there.
But she had heard enough.
Her eyes moved from Ethan to Daniel.
“You recorded me?””
Ethan stood.
“Mom…”
“No.””
Her voice was cold.
“You betrayed me.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Actually, you betrayed this family.””
Vanessa laughed.
A strange, empty laugh.
“You all think you know everything.””
She looked directly at me.
“You especially.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Her expression changed.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
“You think Emma was perfect?””
The mention of Lily’s mother made Daniel’s face harden.
“Don’t.””
But Vanessa continued.
“You don’t know what happened before she died.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Stop talking about Emma.””
“No.””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“You should know the truth.””
My heart started pounding.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at Lily’s bedroom upstairs.
Then back at us.
“The necklace wasn’t the only thing Emma left behind.””
Daniel went still.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
And placed it on the table.
“I found this months ago.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at it.
“What is it?””
Vanessa smiled.
“The reason Emma never wanted you to know everything.””
May you like
Then she walked away.
Leaving us staring at an envelope that could destroy everything we believed about Lily’s mother.
