Amused

Chapter 5: The Announcement That Never Happened

The engagement dinner was scheduled to begin at seven.

At six forty-five, George Mitchell stood beside the fountain with a microphone in his hand, looking like a man preparing to announce a royal wedding rather than a business arrangement that did not exist.

I watched him from the mansion's covered veranda.

He wore a navy suit, a pale blue tie, and the confident smile of someone who had never considered the possibility that an audience might reject his performance.

Patricia stood beside him, arranging the folds of her dress.

Vanessa was near the head table, speaking animatedly to a group of guests.

Ethan stood beside me.

He had changed into a fresh suit, but his expression remained troubled.

"Are you sure you want to stay?"" he asked.

"Yes.""

"George may say something about the company.""

"Then we'll hear exactly what he says.""

Richard had advised us not to confront George until the relevant records had been preserved. He had also arranged for Carter Holdings' legal team to send a formal notice to the financing adviser clarifying that no transfer agreement had been authorized.

The evidence was being secured.

Now we needed to understand how much of the false story George had already told other people.

A bell chimed near the garden.

Guests moved toward their tables.

George tapped the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention?""

The conversations faded.

He smiled broadly.

"First, Patricia and I want to thank you all for joining us to celebrate the engagement of our beautiful daughter, Vanessa, and the wonderful Ethan Carter.""

Applause rose around the garden.

Vanessa pressed a hand to her chest and smiled.

Ethan did not move.

George continued.

"Tonight is about family. It's about two people coming together and building something lasting. But sometimes, a marriage also represents the beginning of something much larger.""

Richard, standing a few feet behind us, leaned closer.

"Here it comes," he murmured.

George lifted his glass.

"For months, our family has been working toward an exciting business collaboration with the Carter family. Together, we intend to explore opportunities that will create jobs, strengthen local investment, and bring new prosperity to Nashville.""

A few guests nodded appreciatively.

One man near the front began clapping.

George waited for the applause to spread.

Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.

"With the support of Margaret Carter, we expect to move forward with a significant real estate partnership involving several properties held by Carter Holdings.""

The garden erupted in polite applause.

My fingers curled around the edge of the veranda railing.

He had done it.

Despite the forged document, despite the unanswered questions, despite the fact that I had never authorized the transaction, George was publicly presenting the partnership as though it were already agreed.

Ethan stared at him.

"He's lying," he whispered.

"Yes," I said.

George gestured toward Vanessa.

"And of course, the marriage of our children will strengthen the trust between our families. We believe that this union represents a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved.""

Vanessa lowered her head modestly.

Patricia dabbed at the corner of one eye.

A guest approached George with a raised glass.

"Congratulations! That's quite an achievement.""

George beamed.

"We're very excited.""

Another guest called out, "When will the partnership be finalized?""

George glanced toward the mansion.

"Very soon. We are simply waiting for the final confirmation.""

Then he raised his microphone again.

"And I believe the best person to speak about that next step is our dear friend and future family member, Margaret Carter.""

The applause stopped.

Every face turned toward the veranda.

George smiled at me.

"Margaret, would you be kind enough to join us?""

Ethan's hand tightened around mine.

"Don't go down there," he said quietly.

I looked at him.

"If I remain silent, some of these people may believe him.""

"But he's trying to trap you.""

"Then he can discover that I don't frighten easily.""

I walked down the stone steps.

The guests parted as I approached the head table.

A server hurried toward me with a chair, but I shook my head and remained standing.

George extended the microphone.

"Margaret, I'm delighted you could join us. We've been telling everyone about the exciting opportunities ahead.""

I looked at the microphone.

Then at the crowd.

Then at George.

"Have you?""

His smile tightened.

"Of course. We've been in discussions for some time.""

"Discussions are not agreements.""

The garden grew quiet.

George chuckled as if I had made a harmless joke.

"Naturally. But we are close to a conclusion.""

"That is news to me.""

His smile faltered.

Patricia stepped forward.

"Margaret, perhaps we should discuss this privately. There's no need to confuse the guests.""

I turned toward her.

"Your husband has just told thirty people that I support a business partnership involving my company. I think it is reasonable for me to clarify whether that statement is true.""

Patricia's cheeks flushed.

George lowered the microphone slightly.

"Let's not turn a celebration into a business meeting.""

"Then you shouldn't have made a business announcement.""

A nervous murmur moved through the crowd.

Vanessa approached, her heels clicking against the stone.

"Mrs. Carter, please. My father is only trying to celebrate our families.""

I looked at her.

"By announcing an agreement that does not exist?""

Her face hardened.

"That's not what he said.""

"I heard him clearly.""

George stepped closer.

"Margaret, I don't appreciate being publicly contradicted.""

"Then I suggest you stop publicly misrepresenting my decisions.""

His jaw tightened.

For the first time that evening, the polished businessman disappeared.

What remained was a man furious that someone had refused to play the role he had assigned her.

He leaned toward me and lowered his voice.

"Be careful. You don't want to damage your son's future over a misunderstanding.""

I met his eyes.

"Is that a warning?""

"It's advice.""

"Then here's some advice for you. Never announce a transaction you have no authority to complete.""

His face darkened.

Vanessa grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Say something!"" she demanded.

Ethan looked at her hand.

Then at George.

"She's telling the truth. My mother never agreed to this partnership.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You knew about it!""

"I knew your father wanted to discuss a partnership. I did not know he intended to announce it as a done deal.""

George lifted his chin.

"We have documents supporting our position.""

The words landed heavily.

I glanced toward Richard.

He stepped forward.

"Mr. Mitchell, if you are referring to the proposed transfer agreement bearing Mrs. Carter's signature, I strongly advise you not to characterize it as an authorized document.""

George's expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

So did Ethan.

"What proposed transfer agreement?"" Ethan asked.

George looked at Richard.

"This is a private matter.""

"Then why did you announce it in front of these guests?"" Richard replied.

George tightened his grip on the microphone.

"Because negotiations have been ongoing, and I have every reason to believe we will reach an agreement.""

Richard removed a document from his folder.

"Our client has formally denied authorizing the agreement that was circulated to a financing adviser. The document is under review, and all relevant communications have been preserved.""

The guests began whispering.

George stared at the paper.

"That is a ridiculous accusation.""

"No accusation has been made publicly beyond the fact that the document was not authorized," Richard said.

"We are establishing who created it and how it was used.""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"You can't do this to us!""

I held her gaze.

"I haven't done anything to you. I have simply refused to let someone speak for me.""

Her eyes flashed.

"You are destroying my engagement party!""

I looked around at the roses, the candles, the silver trays, and the expensive arrangements her parents had paid to display.

"No, Vanessa. Your father chose to make a false announcement. You chose to defend him without asking whether it was true.""

She opened her mouth.

Ethan stepped between us.

"Vanessa, stop.""

She stared at him in disbelief.

"You're taking her side?""

"I'm taking the side of the truth.""

"After everything we've planned?""

He looked exhausted.

"What exactly have we planned, Vanessa? A wedding? Or a business deal?""

She recoiled as though he had slapped her.

George thrust the microphone toward a server.

"This conversation is over.""

But Richard spoke before the man could take it.

"One final clarification, Mr. Mitchell. The Belle Meade estate is owned by Carter Holdings.

Today's event was authorized under a short-term venue agreement. Neither that agreement nor your family's booking conveys any ownership interest in the property.""

The garden fell silent.

Patricia's wineglass slipped from her fingers.

It struck the stone and shattered.

Vanessa turned slowly toward her mother.

"What did he just say?""

George's face had become almost purple.

Richard continued, his tone perfectly calm.

"The estate is not owned by the Mitchell family. It has never been promised to them. No transfer of ownership has been authorized.""

Several guests began looking toward the mansion.

A woman near the champagne table whispered, "I thought George said this house was going to be part of their family portfolio.""

Another guest replied, "That's what he told me.""

George snapped toward them.

"I never said that.""

The man in the navy suit—the same guest who had filmed me being sprayed—lifted his phone.

"You did, actually. You told us the Carter family was transferring the property as part of the partnership.""

George's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Vanessa looked at her father.

"Daddy, you told me this estate would be ours.""

He seized her arm.

"Not now.""

She pulled away.

"You said everything had been arranged!""

"Vanessa.""

"You said we wouldn't have to worry about money after the wedding!""

A few guests gasped.

George looked around wildly.

"That's enough!""

But the damage had been done.

Vanessa had just revealed more than she intended.

Ethan stared at her.

"Why would you think you wouldn't have to worry about money after the wedding?""

She turned toward him.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Then explain it.""

Her eyes darted toward her mother, then her father, searching for someone to rescue her.

Nobody did.

I stepped back, allowing the silence to settle.

I had not planned to humiliate Vanessa in front of her friends.

I had not needed to.

All I had done was refuse to confirm a lie.

George shoved his hands into his pockets and forced a smile.

"This has been an unfortunate misunderstanding. We should all return to dinner.""

But nobody moved.

Then a man near the gate spoke.

"George, you told me your financing was secured.""

George turned sharply.

The man held up his phone.

"You told me the Carter agreement was signed. I committed money based on what you said.""

The color drained from George's face.

"What are you talking about?""

"I'm talking about the investment you asked me to make in Bellhaven Property Ventures.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

He stepped toward the man.

"Sir, would you be willing to speak with our legal team?""

The man nodded.

"Gladly.""

George stared at him.

Then he looked at me.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that the problem was no longer contained within our family.

His public announcement had connected the forged agreement to real people, real money, and real questions.

Vanessa reached for Ethan's hand.

"Please," she whispered.

"Can we just go somewhere private?""

He withdrew his hand.

"Not until you answer one question.""

She stared at him.

"Did you know your father was telling people that my mother had signed an agreement transferring control of Carter Holdings?""

Her lips parted.

She looked at George.

He shook his head almost imperceptibly.

Then she turned back to Ethan.

"I knew he was negotiating.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know about any forged signature.""

Richard watched her carefully.

George suddenly stepped forward.

"This is absurd. Vanessa has nothing to do with my company's negotiations.""

But the man near the gate spoke again.

"Then perhaps you can explain why her name appears on the Bellhaven correspondence.""

The garden went completely silent.

Vanessa stopped crying.

May you like

George turned toward the man so quickly that his microphone fell from his hand.

And for the first time that evening, neither of them had an answer.
