Amused

Chapter 3: The House That Was Never Hers

Ethan didn't respond to Vanessa's message.

He stood by the window for almost a minute, his phone clenched in one hand, while Richard quietly gathered the financial documents.

Finally, my son turned toward me.

“Tell me about the house.””

I looked at the envelope on the table.

“The Belle Meade estate was purchased by one of my companies eleven months ago.””

His eyebrows drew together.

“Eleven months ago? That's before I proposed.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you told me you wanted to build a life independent of my money.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I did.””

“And I respected that. I didn't want you to feel that your achievements belonged to me.””

Ethan glanced toward the garden again.

“But Vanessa said her parents arranged the venue.””

“Her parents arranged the party,” Richard corrected.

“They did not arrange the venue.””

Ethan stared at him.

“Then how did they get permission to use it?””

Richard opened his briefcase again.

“The estate was leased to an events company for a series of private functions. That company received authorization to host today's engagement party. The booking was made under the Mitchell family's account.””

“So they rented the house?””

“Technically, yes. They paid the event coordinator for access to the garden and several interior rooms.””

Ethan looked at me.

“You own the house.””

“Carter Holdings owns it,” I replied.

“I control the company.””

He let out a slow breath.

“Does Vanessa know?””

“I don't believe she does.””

“Does her father?””

Richard hesitated.

“We have reason to believe George suspects that the property belongs to an institutional owner connected to Carter Holdings. Whether he knows you personally control the company is another question.””

I watched Ethan's expression darken.

“Why would that matter to him?””

Richard opened a second folder.

“Because George Mitchell has been trying to acquire property from our company. The Belle Meade estate is one of several assets his representatives have expressed interest in.””

Ethan's gaze sharpened.

“Why would he want this particular house?””

“Prestige,” Richard said.

“And possibly leverage. The estate is worth considerably more than the Mitchell family could comfortably afford, based on their current financial position.””

Ethan looked back toward the garden.

“Is that why they wanted the engagement party here?””

“We don't know,” I said.

“But we intend to find out.””

He pressed his palms against the windowsill.

“God. I defended them to you.””

“You defended the woman you loved.””

“I told you that her father was a successful businessman. I told you the rumors about his debts were exaggerated.””

“You believed what she told you.””

“And you were right.””

I shook my head.

“I was worried. That isn't the same as being right about everything.””

He turned toward me.

“You knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“And you came here dressed like this to see what she'd do.””

I held his gaze.

“I came here because I wanted to meet your future wife without the influence of my money, my name, or my position. I wanted to know whether she could show kindness to someone who appeared to have nothing.””

Ethan lowered his eyes to my damp blouse.

“And she failed.””

“She did.””

He swallowed.

“Mom, I'm sorry.””

“For what?””

“For making you feel like you had to do this. For ignoring your concerns. For letting Vanessa convince me that you were interfering in my life.””

I reached for his hand.

“You are allowed to make your own mistakes, Ethan. You're allowed to love someone I wouldn't choose for you. But you must never confuse protecting a relationship with protecting a lie.””

His eyes glistened.

“I don't know what to do.””

“You don't have to decide everything tonight.””

He nodded slowly.

Then his expression hardened.

“But I'm not marrying someone who treats you like that.””

I squeezed his hand.

“Make that decision because of what you believe, not because you're angry on my behalf.””

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he picked up his phone.

“I need to speak to Vanessa.””

Richard cleared his throat.

“I would recommend having that conversation somewhere private.””

Ethan almost smiled.

“After what happened today, I don't think private conversations are going to solve anything.””

He left the suite.

I waited until the door closed before turning to Richard.

“Tell me the rest.””

Richard's expression became serious.

“The Mitchell family has been attempting to secure financing through several channels. Two lenders declined their applications. Another agreed to consider a proposal if they could demonstrate access to a substantial real estate portfolio.””

“And they approached Carter Holdings.””

“Yes. They submitted a proposal for a joint venture involving a commercial development outside Nashville. The proposal included projected revenue figures that do not appear to be supported by the underlying contracts.””

“Fraud?””

“Potentially misleading representations. We are still investigating.””

I looked down at the folder.

“Has George used Ethan's name?””

“Not directly in the formal proposal. However, an email from one of his advisers refers to Ethan's future family connections as a possible advantage in negotiations.””

My stomach tightened.

“They intend to use my son.””

“That is our concern.””

I stood and walked to the mirror.

My gray hair was wet. Mud streaked the hem of my skirt. A bruise was beginning to form on my right knee.

For one strange moment, I thought of Daniel.

He had once told me that the most dangerous people weren't always the ones who hated you.

Sometimes, they were the ones who smiled while calculating what you could do for them.

I had spent decades learning to recognize that smile.

Now I wondered how many times Ethan had mistaken it for love.

“Richard,” I said, “I want a complete review of every transaction involving George Mitchell, Patricia Mitchell, and their associated companies.””

“Already underway.””

“I want all communications relating to this estate preserved. Booking records, payment instructions, emails, everything.””

“Understood.””

“And I want Noah protected. Vanessa threatened to fire him for helping me.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll speak to the event manager.””

“Quietly. He shouldn't lose his job because he did the right thing.””

Richard closed the briefcase.

“One more thing, Margaret.””

“What is it?””

“The Mitchells have requested a meeting with Carter Holdings' executive team for Monday morning.””

I turned.

“Who arranged it?””

“George's office. The stated purpose is to discuss a potential acquisition.””

I looked toward the door through which Ethan had disappeared.

“Cancel it.””

Richard paused.

“Do you want me to provide a reason?””

“Tell them we are reviewing the proposal and will contact them when the review is complete.””

“And if George asks to speak to you personally?””

“Tell him I'm unavailable.””

Richard gave a small nod.

Then he picked up the briefcase and left.

I remained alone in the room, listening to the distant music.

Outside, the sun was beginning to lower behind the trees. The chandeliers glowed more brightly as the garden lights came on.

The party was beautiful again.

But the people in it had not changed.

A knock sounded at the door.

Before I could answer, Vanessa entered.

She had changed into a pale blue dress. Her hair was perfectly arranged, and the only sign that anything had gone wrong was the tightness around her mouth.

She closed the door behind her.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said sweetly.

“I think we need to talk.””

I sat in the armchair beside the window.

“Do we?””

She pulled another chair closer but didn't sit.

“I want to apologize for what happened outside.””

I waited.

Vanessa folded her hands.

“I was startled when I saw you. I thought you were a stranger trying to get into a private event. I reacted badly.””

“You sprayed me with a garden hose.””

Her smile faltered.

“Yes. And that was inappropriate.””

“Inappropriate?””

“I was upset.””

“You were holding a champagne glass and laughing while I was on the ground.””

She looked away.

“I know how it appeared.””

“How it appeared?””

Vanessa drew a sharp breath.

“Mrs. Carter, I'm trying to make this right. Can we please stop going over every detail?””

I studied her face.

She wasn't sorry that she had hurt me.

She was sorry that Ethan had seen it.

“Why did you threaten to fire Noah?”” I asked.

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Who?””

“The waiter who tried to help me.””

“Oh.”” She waved a hand dismissively.

“He was interfering. I was trying to manage the situation.””

“He was showing compassion.””

“He was ignoring his responsibilities.””

I leaned forward.

“His responsibility was to serve your guests, Vanessa. Not to obey your cruelty.””

Her face hardened.

For a moment, the carefully arranged mask slipped.

“You have no idea how difficult it is to organize an event like this,” she snapped.

“Everything has to be perfect. The guests, the photographs, the atmosphere. Then you appeared looking like that and started asking for Ethan.””

I glanced at my clothes.

“Looking like what?””

She hesitated.

“Like someone who didn't belong here.””

“And that gave you the right to humiliate me?””

“No.””

The answer came reluctantly.

Then she added, “But you have to understand that I didn't know who you were.””

I held her gaze.

“That is exactly the problem.””

She stared at me.

I continued.

“If you had known I was Ethan's mother, you might have offered me a chair, a towel, and a glass of champagne. But you believed I was poor, so you treated me as if I were beneath you.””

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

“You're twisting this.””

“No. I'm describing what happened.””

She walked to the window and looked down at the garden.

“Ethan is furious,” she said.

“You need to help me explain this to him.””

“Why?””

“Because we're getting married.””

“That is a decision between you and Ethan.””

“He loves me.””

“Then you should have treated the woman who raised him with basic respect.””

Vanessa spun around.

“You don't understand our relationship.””

“Perhaps not.””

“He has promised me a future.””

I looked at her carefully.

“What kind of future?””

She stiffened.

“The kind every woman deserves. Security. A home. A family.””

“And what are you prepared to contribute to that future?””

Her mouth tightened.

“I love him.””

“Then why did you tell him he needed to choose between you and me?””

Vanessa went still.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely startled.

“How did you know about that?””

“I heard you speaking to your mother.””

She took a step toward me.

“You were listening to a private conversation?””

“I was walking away from the woman who had just sprayed me with water.””

She pressed her lips together.

Then she said, “That conversation was taken out of context.””

“What context makes an ultimatum like that reasonable?””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You're determined to destroy this engagement, aren't you?””

I said nothing.

She stepped closer.

“Listen to me carefully, Mrs. Carter. Ethan is an adult.

He has chosen me. You can't expect to control his life forever just because you're his mother.””

“I don't.””

“Then stop interfering.””

I looked at her pale blue dress, the diamond earrings, and the manicured fingers twisting around the strap of her handbag.

“Vanessa, I have no intention of controlling Ethan's life. But I will not allow anyone to use him.””

Her face changed.

“What does that mean?””

“It means exactly what I said.””

She studied me, and something cold entered her expression.

“You think you're better than me because you're his mother?””

“No.””

“Because you have money?””

“No.””

“Then why are you acting like you have the right to judge me?””

I rose slowly from the chair.

“Because I have watched you judge an entire human being by the clothes she was wearing. And I have watched you threaten someone whose only mistake was being kind.””

Vanessa stepped back.

Then she gave a short, bitter laugh.

“You really think you can make me disappear from Ethan's life?””

“I don't have to make you do anything.””

She stared at me.

I moved toward the door and opened it.

“Your actions will speak for themselves.””

For a moment, she looked as though she might scream.

Instead, she straightened her dress and walked past me.

At the doorway, she stopped.

“Enjoy this little victory while you can,” she whispered.

“You have no idea what my family is capable of.””

Then she left.

I closed the door.

My hands were steady, but my heart was pounding.

I had heard threats before. Most were empty. Some were not.

I returned to the window and looked down at the garden.

George Mitchell stood beside the fountain, speaking to a man I recognized from one of the photographs in Richard's file.

The man handed George a slim envelope.

George opened it, glanced inside, and quickly slipped it into his jacket.

Then he looked up at the mansion.

Straight toward my window.

He smiled.

It wasn't a friendly smile.

My phone vibrated on the table.

A message from Richard appeared.

Margaret, we found a document that may explain why the Mitchells are so desperate to secure this marriage.

A second message followed.

It appears George has been telling potential investors that Ethan will soon have authority over a substantial Carter Holdings property portfolio.

I stared at the screen.

Ethan had no such authority.

He had never been promised it.

And I had never discussed transferring control of my company to him.

Before I could reply, another message arrived.

There is also a signed preliminary agreement attached to the proposal.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

The attachment loaded.

At the top of the document was the name of my company.

Below it was a signature purporting to be mine.

And beneath that signature, in bold type, were the words:

*PROPOSED TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST — CARTER HOLDINGS.*

I read the page once.

Then again.

The signature looked convincing.

But I had never signed that agreement.

Someone had forged my name.

And if George Mitchell had been using that document to secure financing, the garden hose incident was no longer the biggest problem facing my family.

The real question was how far he was willing to go to get what he wanted.

And whether Vanessa had been helping him all along.
