Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The name on Rachel’s phone burned into my mind.

*Dad.*

I stared at the screen.

Then at Rachel.

Then back at the phone.

“No.””

The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.

Rachel looked like she wanted to explain.

But there was nothing she could say that would make sense.

My father was dead.

Rachel was supposed to be dead.

And somehow, both of them had just appeared in my life again like the last two years had been a cruel illusion.

“Answer it,” I said.

Rachel’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“Ethan…”

“Answer it.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa smiled.

A small, satisfied smile.

Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

Rachel pressed the answer button.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

A voice I knew.

A voice I had not heard since the day I watched doctors pronounce him gone.

“Rachel?””

My knees almost gave out.

I grabbed the side of my car.

Because that was my father.

Older.

Rougher.

But unmistakable.

My father.

“Dad?””

The word escaped my mouth.

Silence.

Then the voice stopped.

“Ethan?””

My entire body went cold.

Rachel looked at me.

The phone slipped slightly in her hand.

“Dad,” I repeated.

The voice on the other end changed instantly.

“You shouldn’t be hearing this.””

I stared at the phone.

“You’re alive.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

One word.

One impossible word.

I felt anger replace the shock.

“You’re alive?””

My voice rose.

“You’re alive, and you let me think you were dead?””

“Ethan, listen—”

“No.””

I stepped closer to the phone.

“You don’t get to tell me to listen.””

My hands were shaking.

“I buried you.””

My father said nothing.

“I stood beside your grave.””

“I know.””

The answer broke something inside me.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Rachel.

Then Vanessa.

Then the phone.

“How long?””

Another silence.

“How long have you been alive?””

My father exhaled.

“Since before Rachel disappeared.””

The street spun.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

Rachel looked down.

I felt like everyone knew the truth except me.

My entire life had been a performance.

“Why?””

My voice cracked.

“Why would you do this to me?””

My father’s voice softened.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A hollow laugh.

“Protect me?””

I pointed at the house.

“My daughter almost died today.””

The silence on the phone was immediate.

“What?””

“Vanessa pushed Sophie into the pool.””

Rachel looked at me.

My father said nothing.

And that silence told me everything.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew.””

“Ethan, I knew Vanessa was dangerous.””

My chest tightened.

“And you still let her into my life?””

“I thought I could control the situation.””

I stared at the phone.

“You thought?””

My voice became quieter.

“You thought?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father said:

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. Mistakes are buying the wrong gift.””

I looked at Rachel.

“This was my life.””

My voice broke.

“You let me mourn people who were alive.””

Rachel whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I turned toward her.

“I don’t know if that’s enough.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

I walked away from them and stood beside the street.

My mind returned to the last two years.

Every night Sophie asked about her mother.

Every time she saw another child with their mom.

Every drawing she made at school.

A little house.

A little girl.

A mommy.

A daddy.

A family.

I had spent two years teaching my daughter how to live without Rachel.

And Rachel had been alive.

Watching.

Somewhere.

“I need the truth,” I said.

Nobody spoke.

“I need all of it.””

Rachel nodded.

“I’ll tell you.””

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“No more secrets.””

“No more.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And her?””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“She knows more than she should.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Please.””

We all looked at her.

She stepped closer.

“Don’t pretend you’re the victim, Rachel.””

Rachel’s face hardened.

“I know exactly what I did.””

“No, you don’t.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Ethan, she’s not telling you everything.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I already knew that.

Everyone around me had a hidden story.

The only person without one was me.

Vanessa continued.

“She didn’t disappear because of me.””

Rachel’s eyes flashed.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Vanessa smiled.

“She disappeared because she found out the truth.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What truth?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

Always that silence.

My patience broke.

“What truth, Rachel?””

She looked away.

“I found out something about your family.””

“What?””

“About your father.””

My heart sank.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Tell him.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Documents showing your father had been hiding money for years.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I thought so too.””

She looked at me.

“Until I found accounts connected to his name.””

I remembered my father differently.

He was strict.

Sometimes distant.

But he had always been honest.

At least, I thought he was.

“What does this have to do with you disappearing?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because Vanessa found out I knew.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

A tiny crack in her confidence.

Rachel continued.

“She wasn’t just stealing from my company.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“She was helping your father.””

The air left my lungs.

“No.””

Vanessa looked away.

That was enough.

“No.””

I repeated it.

Because I needed the word to be true.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Ethan, I found out your father and Vanessa had been working together for years.””

My head shook.

“My father died before—”

“Your father wasn’t the victim.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed me.

“He was involved.””

I looked at the phone.

“Dad?””

No answer.

I lifted the phone.

“Dad, is that true?””

The line stayed silent.

Then my father finally spoke.

“Ethan…”

I closed my eyes.

Because I already knew.

The truth was always hidden in the pauses.

“You knew.””

My father whispered:

“Yes.””

I ended the call.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

I couldn’t hear another lie.

I threw the phone onto the car seat.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“Did you love me?””

The question surprised her.

“What?””

“Did you ever love me?””

Her eyes filled instantly.

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

She looked directly at me.

“Of what would happen if you knew the truth about Sophie.””

My heart stopped.

“What about Sophie?””

Rachel took a breath.

And for the first time all night…

She looked terrified.

“Ethan…”

“What?””

She whispered:

“Sophie was never supposed to be in danger.””

I stared at her.

“Then why was she?””

Rachel looked toward Vanessa.

“Because someone found out the secret I spent two years trying to protect.””

“What secret?””

Rachel reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope.

She handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

In Rachel’s handwriting.

“I wrote this before the accident.””

I held it.

“What is it?””

Her voice broke.

“The truth about Sophie’s birth.””

I looked at the envelope.

Then at Rachel.

Then at Vanessa.

Before I could open it, Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

I turned.

Her face had changed completely.

No more pretending.

No more kindness.

Just fear.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“Because once you read that letter…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“You’ll never look at Sophie the same way again.””
