Chapter 4: The Secret Buried With Rachel
I read the message three times.
*“Ethan, if you still love your daughter, leave before Rachel finds you.””*
My first instinct was to believe it.
Not because I trusted the person who sent it.
But because I had spent the last twenty-four hours watching my entire reality collapse.
My wife had lied to me.
My new wife had tried to hurt my daughter.
And now the woman I buried two years ago was standing outside my house.
Alive.
I looked through the windshield.
Rachel was still there.
Still staring in my direction.
She knew.
She had to know.
I started the engine.
But I didn’t drive away.
I couldn’t.
Because no matter how terrified I was, one thing was stronger than fear.
I needed answers.
I stepped out of the car.
The moment my feet touched the pavement, both women turned toward me.
Vanessa’s face changed first.
Shock.
Then anger.
Rachel’s face changed differently.
Pain.
A deep, broken kind of pain.
“Ethan,” Rachel whispered.
Hearing my name in her voice almost destroyed me.
For two years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined seeing Rachel again.
I imagined miracles.
I imagined waking up from a nightmare and finding out the doctors were wrong.
But never like this.
Never with her standing beside the woman who pushed our daughter into a pool.
“Don’t,” I said.
Rachel stopped.
“Don’t say my name like everything is normal.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.””
I laughed.
A bitter sound.
“You can explain?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
The anger I felt was almost impossible to control.
“No.””
Her mouth closed.
“No?””
“No more lies.””
I pointed toward the house.
“My daughter almost died today.””
Vanessa looked away.
Rachel’s face fell.
“What?””
I stared at Rachel.
“You heard me.””
Her eyes moved between us.
“What happened?””
I couldn’t believe she was asking.
“You don’t get to ask me that.””
“Ethan…”
“You disappeared.””
My voice cracked.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
Rachel looked like I had slapped her.
“I never wanted that.””
“You never wanted it?””
I stepped closer.
“I buried you.””
Silence.
“I stood at your funeral.””
My hands shook.
“I held Sophie while she cried because she couldn’t understand why Mommy wasn’t coming home.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I know.””
“You know?””
“Yes.””
The answer made me stop.
“You know?””
She nodded slowly.
“I watched.””
My stomach twisted.
“What?””
“I watched from a distance.””
The words felt impossible.
“You watched your daughter grow up without you?””
Rachel looked down.
“I had no choice.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Rachel.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I don’t expect you to believe anything.””
Rachel’s voice was quiet.
“I just need you to listen.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“He won’t understand.””
I turned toward her.
“Be quiet.””
She froze.
It was the first time I had ever spoken to her that way.
And she knew something had changed.
Rachel looked at me.
“Can we go somewhere private?””
I almost refused.
Then I remembered Sophie.
The note.
The warning.
The lies.
“Talk.””
Rachel glanced at Vanessa.
“She can’t be here.””
“Why?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because Vanessa is the reason I disappeared.””
The words landed harder than anything else.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face went completely still.
“Explain.””
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“Vanessa wasn’t a stranger when you met her.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel looked at the woman I married.
“She was my closest friend.””
The world went silent.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“No.””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
That scared me more.
Rachel continued.
“She knew everything about our life. She knew about you. She knew about Sophie.””
“Why would she marry me?””
Rachel’s eyes darkened.
“Because she wanted what I had.””
I stared at her.
“That’s insane.””
“I wish it was.””
Rachel looked toward the house.
“Two years ago, I found out Vanessa was involved with people who were using my company accounts to move money.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“She was stealing from me.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Don’t listen to her.””
I ignored her.
Rachel continued.
“I confronted her.””
“And?””
“And she threatened me.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“What kind of threat?””
Rachel looked at me.
“The kind that involved Sophie.””
I stopped breathing.
“What did she say?””
Rachel swallowed.
“She told me children are the easiest way to control someone.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she made sure I couldn’t.””
Rachel reached into her coat pocket and pulled out an old phone.
“This.””
She held it out.
“I recorded everything.””
I didn’t take it.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Her eyes filled again.
“Because the night I planned to tell you, my car went off the road.””
I stared at her.
“The accident.””
She nodded.
“You were told I died.””
“But you survived.””
“Barely.””
Rachel looked away.
“When I woke up, I was told Vanessa had already convinced everyone I was gone.””
My voice lowered.
“Who told you that?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
And that bothered me.
“Rachel.””
She looked at me.
“The person who helped fake my death.””
A terrible silence followed.
“Who?””
She looked toward the dark house.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father died three years ago.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My head shook.
“No, he couldn’t.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Ethan, your father didn’t die before my accident.””
My heart pounded.
“He died after.””
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“He was alive when Vanessa came to the hospital.””
The street suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Like I was standing in a world where nothing was real.
“My father?””
Rachel nodded.
“He helped Vanessa hide me.””
I looked between them.
“No.””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because Vanessa had something over me.””
“What?””
Rachel looked at the house.
“She had proof that could destroy you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What proof?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Vanessa suddenly moved.
Fast.
She grabbed Rachel’s arm.
“Stop talking.””
Rachel pulled away.
“You’re done controlling everyone.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
The sweet, patient woman I knew disappeared.
“Do you really think he’ll forgive you?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa smiled.
Not kindly.
“You still don’t know the whole story, do you?””
Rachel’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Ask your precious dead wife why she really left.””
I stared at Rachel.
“Rachel?””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Rachel had faced everything else.
But now…
Now she looked afraid.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Ask her why she was running away with another man the night she disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Rachel whispered:
“That’s not true.””
But her voice wasn’t confident.
It was broken.
Vanessa smiled.
“Ask her who Sophie’s real father is.””
The street went completely silent.
I looked at Rachel.
The woman I loved.
The woman I mourned.
The woman standing in front of me alive.
“Ethan…”
I couldn’t speak.
Then Rachel’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned pale.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
She just showed me.
One name.
One name that made my blood run cold.
May you like
Because it was the same name I had seen before.
*Dad.*
