Amused

Chapter 9: The Secret Hidden Inside My Own Home

The phone slipped slightly in David’s hand.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not David.

Not Marcus.

Not even Evelyn.

Because Amy’s words didn’t make sense.

She wasn’t watching David.

She was watching me.

I felt every person in the room looking at me.

Waiting for an explanation I didn’t have.

“Amy,” David said slowly, “what does Hannah have to do with this?””

The line was quiet.

Then Amy answered.

“I don’t know if she knows.””

My heart sank.

“Knows what?””

Amy took a shaky breath.

“Her house.””

I looked around the living room.

My house.

The place where Chloe grew up.

The place where I thought I was safe.

“What about my house?””

“The evidence was never in Marcus’s possession.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

Amy continued.

“Your father hid it before he died.””

David looked at Evelyn.

“And you knew?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Then how did Amy know?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Marcus.

“You said you were looking for evidence.””

“I was.””

“But you didn’t know where it was.””

He slowly shook his head.

“No.””

Amy’s voice came through the speaker.

“Because your father didn’t trust anyone connected to the company.””

David frowned.

“Not even Marcus?””

“Not even my parents.””

The room went silent.

“What are you saying?”” David asked.

“I’m saying he hid the evidence somewhere nobody would think to look.””

“Where?””

Amy hesitated.

Then:

“In a house.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

“My house?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

David immediately looked at me.

“Hannah?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Amy spoke softly.

“I know it sounds impossible.””

“You said you were there when we moved in.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because I helped choose it.””

My breathing stopped.

David looked at me.

“What?””

Amy continued.

“The house wasn’t random.””

I looked at David.

“What is she talking about?””

He looked just as confused.

“I don’t know.””

Amy sighed.

“Your father owned that property before it became yours.””

David froze.

“What?””

Evelyn’s face changed.

She knew.

I saw it.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Evelyn looked at me.

“I knew the house had belonged to my husband.””

My anger rose.

“And you let us buy it?””

“I didn’t know the evidence was there.””

“But you knew something was.””

Evelyn looked away.

That was enough.

David stared at her.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom!””

“I knew your father had used that property for something.””

“For what?””

“I didn’t know.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

Evelyn turned sharply.

“You don’t know everything either.””

Marcus pointed at the house.

“The location was the clue.””

“What clue?””

“The address.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What about it?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“Your house number.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“It matches the date your father died.””

The room went quiet.

David looked confused.

“June 14?””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

My skin prickled.

“You’re saying my address was chosen because of a date?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“I’m saying your address was created because of a message.””

I didn’t understand.

Then Chloe appeared at the hallway entrance.

“Mom?””

My heart jumped.

“Chloe, go upstairs.””

She didn’t move.

“I heard everything.””

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart—”

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m tired of everyone telling me to go away.””

The words hit me.

Because she was right.

Adults had spent days protecting her by hiding things.

But she had already been pulled into it.

I knelt down.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at the others.

“Is Grandma really bad?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn slowly walked closer.

“Chloe.””

My body immediately tensed.

But Chloe didn’t step away.

Evelyn looked at her granddaughter.

“I made mistakes.””

Chloe’s eyes narrowed.

“Did you put someone in our house?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“But I never wanted anyone to hurt you.””

Chloe looked away.

“You still scared us.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, my daughter saw Evelyn not as a grandmother or a villain.

Just a person who had made terrible choices.

Then Marcus spoke.

“We need to find the evidence before they do.””

David looked at him.

“Who is they?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That silence was terrifying.

Finally, Amy spoke.

“The person who has been moving everything from the shadows.””

David picked up the phone.

“Amy, who?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Someone you know.””

Everyone froze.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Your father’s closest friend.””

David frowned.

“My father’s friend is dead.””

“No.””

Amy’s voice shook.

“He changed his name.””

Marcus looked suddenly alarmed.

“Amy.””

“What?””

“You can’t tell them yet.””

“Why?””

“Because if he knows we found the evidence—”

The sound of something interrupted him.

A crash.

Then silence.

“Amy?””

No answer.

“Amy!””

The line remained open.

We heard breathing.

Then a man’s voice.

Not Amy’s.

A stranger.

“You should have stayed gone.””

David grabbed the phone.

“Who is this?””

The man laughed.

“You really don’t remember me, do you?””

Marcus’s face changed.

He recognized the voice.

“David.””

The voice continued.

“Your father always said you were the weak link.””

David went pale.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who cleaned up your family’s mess for twenty years.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Victor.””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“No.””

David looked at her.

“Who is Victor?””

Evelyn sat down.

Her hands shook.

“He was your father’s best friend.””

“And?””

She looked at me.

“His business partner.””

My stomach dropped.

The same pattern.

Another person connected to the money.

Another secret.

Marcus grabbed the notebook.

“Your father didn’t hide the evidence in the house.””

David looked at him.

“What?””

“He hid it in someone.””

Nobody understood.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus turned toward me.

Then toward Chloe.

And my heart stopped before he even spoke.

“The evidence isn’t hidden somewhere inside the walls.””

“Then where?””

Marcus looked at the old family photographs hanging in the hallway.

“The house wasn’t the hiding place.””

A pause.

“The family was.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus walked toward the wall.

Toward the oldest picture.

A picture of David’s father.

Evelyn.

A younger David.

And another person.

Someone I had never noticed before.

A woman standing behind them.

I stepped closer.

Because I recognized her.

Not from memory.

From the photo Amy sent.

The same woman.

The same face.

Amy.

But this photograph was taken long before David met her.

“How is that possible?”” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Amy wasn’t investigating David’s family.””

He pointed at the picture.

“She was born into it.””

David stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Marcus turned the picture over.

Something was written on the back.

A name.

A name that made everyone silent.

*Amy Vance.*

David’s face went blank.

“What?””

Evelyn whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at all of us.

“It means Amy wasn’t just connected to the secret.””

He looked at David.

“She was part of it from the beginning.””

Before anyone could respond, every light in the house went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then Chloe screamed.

Not from fear.

From surprise.

Because someone was standing behind her.

A voice whispered in the darkness:

“Finally.””

The lights flickered back on.

And standing in our hallway was a woman I had only seen in photographs.

A woman who was supposed to be dead.

Amy.

She looked directly at David.

May you like

And said:

“I’m sorry it took me twenty years to come home.””
