Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead
David stared at the photograph.
He didn’t blink.
He didn’t breathe.
He just stood there, holding the picture like it might disappear if he looked away.
I had seen my husband angry.
I had seen him frustrated.
I had seen him scared.
But I had never seen him broken.
“Amy…”
The name left his mouth like a prayer.
Or a wound reopening.
Chloe stood beside me, confused and frightened.
I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.
“Sweetheart, go to my room.””
“But Mom—”
“Now.””
This time, she listened.
She disappeared down the hallway.
Only when she was gone did I turn back.
“Someone needs to explain.””
Nobody argued.
Not even David.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“She’s alive.””
The words sounded impossible.
Evelyn sat down slowly on the couch.
For the first time since I met her, she looked powerless.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I thought she was dead.””
David looked at his mother.
“You thought?””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You thought my wife was dead?””
Evelyn flinched.
“David…”
“No.””
He held up the photograph.
“You told me she died.””
“I believed it.””
“You believed it?””
His voice rose.
“You let me bury someone who was alive?””
Evelyn looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
The same excuse.
Always the same excuse.
Protecting.
Protecting.
Protecting.
But somehow, everyone around her ended up destroyed.
David walked away from her.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
“Where is Amy?””
Marcus looked at the photo.
“She wants you to find her.””
David turned.
“What?””
“The message.””
Marcus pointed.
“She didn’t send this for nothing.””
I looked at the photograph.
Amy standing outside our house.
Three days ago.
Alive.
Watching.
“How did she know where we lived?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Evelyn did.
“Because she’s been watching us.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
Evelyn sighed.
“She came back six months ago.””
David froze.
“Six months?””
“You knew?””
“I knew someone was looking into the past.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I saw her once.””
The room became silent.
“Where?””
“At the cemetery.””
David stared.
“The cemetery?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father’s grave.””
I felt a chill.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know if it was really her.””
Marcus looked angry.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“You always do this.””
Marcus’s voice hardened.
“You hide behind uncertainty.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“And you hide behind revenge.””
The two of them stared at each other.
Twenty years of anger in one room.
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
They both looked at me.
“My family is being threatened. My daughter is being used as a messenger. Someone entered my house.””
I pointed at the photograph.
“And now my husband’s dead wife is apparently alive.””
I took a breath.
“I don’t care who started this. I need the truth.””
For once, nobody interrupted.
Marcus nodded.
“Fair.””
He sat down.
“Amy discovered the hidden account twenty years ago.””
David remained standing.
“She told me.””
Marcus nodded.
“She did.””
“Then why didn’t she just tell me everything?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Of your mother.””
David looked at Evelyn.
“She was afraid of Mom?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You threatened her.””
“I warned her.””
“You told her if she exposed the documents, David would lose everything.””
Evelyn looked away.
David whispered:
“Did you?””
No answer.
“Mom.””
Finally, Evelyn spoke.
“I was scared.””
The admission shocked all of us.
“I had already lost your father. I thought I was losing you too.””
David stared.
“So you threatened my wife?””
“I wanted her to stop.””
“She was telling the truth.””
“I didn’t know that.””
Marcus stood.
“You knew enough.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You don’t know what I knew.””
“Then tell him.””
Silence.
Then Evelyn said:
“The money wasn’t stolen by Marcus.””
David looked at her.
“You said he betrayed you.””
“I was wrong.””
“Who took it?””
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the documents.
“Your father.””
David froze.
“What?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Your father moved the money.””
“Why?””
“Because he discovered something.””
“What?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“He discovered someone was using the company to hide illegal transactions.””
The room went quiet.
“And that someone was?””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
Then at David.
“Someone inside the family.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“Your mother knows.””
David turned.
“Mom.””
Evelyn looked like she had aged ten years.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
She looked at him.
“I know your father didn’t die by accident.””
The room stopped.
David stared.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“Your father was investigating the money when he died.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Evelyn…”
She shook her head.
“I never told David because I wanted him away from it.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You wanted him obedient.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Maybe.””
The honesty was brutal.
David stepped back.
“My whole life…”
His voice cracked.
“My whole life, everyone decided what I could handle.””
Nobody spoke.
Then his phone rang.
The sound cut through the room.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
David answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a woman’s voice came through.
A woman’s voice none of us expected.
David’s face changed.
He slowly looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Amy?””
The room went completely still.
David put the phone on speaker.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
Older.
Softer.
But unmistakable.
“David.””
He couldn’t speak.
“I know you have questions.””
His eyes filled.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“I’m close.””
“Why did you leave me?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because if I stayed, you would have died too.””
David covered his mouth.
I watched my husband break in front of me.
Not because of betrayal.
Because of grief.
Because he had spent twenty years mourning someone who had been alive.
“Amy,” he whispered.
“I’m sorry.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because the people who wanted me gone never stopped looking.””
Marcus stepped closer to the phone.
“Amy, it’s me.””
The line went silent.
Then:
“Marcus.””
Everyone froze.
“You’re alive.””
“So are you.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Amy said something that made my blood run cold.
“Listen carefully.””
Her voice changed.
Urgent.
Fearful.
“The person who has been attacking your family isn’t after the money.””
David gripped the phone.
“Then what do they want?””
Amy answered:
“They want the evidence that proves who killed my parents.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus whispered:
“Your parents?””
Amy continued.
“And they know where it is.””
David looked around.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then Amy said:
“Inside Hannah’s house.””
I felt the room tilt.
“What?””
Amy’s voice lowered.
“Hannah…”
I stepped closer to the phone.
“How do you know my name?””
Silence.
Then she said:
“Because I was there the day you moved in.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
And then Amy said the one thing that changed everything.
“I wasn’t watching David.””
May you like
A pause.
“I was watching you.””
