Amused

Chapter 7: The Company That Was Always Mine

Nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Vivian.

Not Caroline.

The silence was so complete that I could hear the paper trembling in my own hands.

My father’s handwriting.

My name.

My company.

My inheritance.

Everything I thought I was losing had never belonged to them in the first place.

I looked at the document again.

The words were impossible to ignore.

*Beneficial ownership transfer agreement.*

*Primary beneficiary: Emma Carter.*

*Controlling interest acquired through Carter Holdings.*

I read the date.

Three months before my wedding.

My knees weakened.

My father had been planning for this.

Not because he wanted to control my life.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

“Emma.””

Daniel’s voice sounded distant.

I looked up slowly.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I can explain.””

I almost smiled.

“You can explain?””

“Yes.””

I held up the document.

“You can explain why my father secretly bought control of your company?””

His face tightened.

“That wasn’t what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

He didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer that made him look innocent.

Vivian stepped forward.

“This document changes nothing.””

I turned toward her.

“That’s a strange thing to say.””

“It is a private agreement.””

“It proves I own the controlling interest in Mercer Development.””

Her expression remained cold.

“Technically.””

I frowned.

“Technically?””

She smiled faintly.

That smile.

The one she used when she believed she was smarter than everyone else.

“You don’t understand business.””

I stared at her.

“No?””

“No.””

She pointed at the document.

“Ownership is not the same as control.””

I felt something shift inside me.

Not fear.

Understanding.

“What did you do?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you do?””

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You changed the operating structure.””

I took a step closer.

“You moved control away from ownership.””

Daniel looked down.

That was confirmation.

My father had protected my shares.

But the Mercers had found another way.

They couldn’t take the company from me.

So they built a system where I owned it…

But they controlled it.

“When?””

I asked.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“When did you do this?””

“Emma…”

“When did you create a company structure designed to hide my own company from me?””

He swallowed.

“Eight months ago.””

The same time.

The same timeline.

The same period when my accounts were accessed.

I nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was trying to prevent a collapse.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You were trying to prevent me from finding out.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why was my name removed from decision-making authority?””

He had no answer.

I turned toward Caroline.

“Did you know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

She looked ashamed.

“I knew about the restructuring.””

I stared.

“How long?””

“Seven months.””

Seven months.

Seven months of smiling at me.

Seven months of having dinner with me.

Seven months of pretending.

“Why?””

Caroline looked broken.

“Because Daniel said if the company failed, everyone would lose everything.””

I laughed quietly.

“And that justified lying to me?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“It doesn’t.””

At least she admitted it.

That was the first real thing anyone in that family had given me.

Vivian walked toward the desk.

“You are becoming emotional again.””

I turned.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“I’m becoming informed.””

She narrowed her eyes.

“You think finding old documents makes you powerful?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I held up the agreement.

“Knowing the truth does.””

For the first time, Vivian looked uncertain.

That was the moment I realized something.

The Mercer family’s greatest weapon was confidence.

They walked into rooms believing nobody would challenge them.

They lied because they believed people would accept the lie.

They took because they believed nobody would ask for it back.

But now I was asking.

And they didn’t know what to do.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Rachel.

*We completed preliminary review. You need to see this immediately.*

Attached was a file.

I opened it.

The first page was a corporate registry report.

The second page showed ownership history.

The third page showed something that made my heart stop.

A transfer request.

Submitted six months earlier.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Vivian.

From someone else.

Someone outside the family.

I looked closer.

The name at the bottom made no sense.

*Marcus Vale.*

I looked up.

“Who is Marcus Vale?””

Nobody answered.

But Daniel’s reaction was immediate.

His face drained.

Vivian looked away.

Caroline whispered,

“Oh no.””

I noticed.

“You know him.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“You do.””

“No, Emma.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked toward him.

“Who is Marcus Vale?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“He’s an investor.””

“An investor who tried to transfer my company?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

I was getting tired of those words.

Everything was always “not like that.””

The money wasn’t stolen.

The signature wasn’t forged.

The company wasn’t taken.

The marriage wasn’t broken.

Except it was.

“Explain.””

Daniel sat down.

For the first time that night, he looked exhausted.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just defeated.

“Marcus was supposed to save the company.””

I stared.

“By taking control?””

“He offered a merger.””

“With my company.””

“With Mercer Development.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pointed at the agreement.

“This is my company.””

Daniel looked away.

“You didn’t know.””

The sentence was quiet.

But brutal.

Because that was the truth.

I didn’t know.

I trusted him.

And he used my trust.

“What was the deal?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Vivian did.

“He would erase the debt.””

I looked at her.

“And?””

“He would become majority partner.””

I stared.

“And what would happen to me?””

Silence.

That was enough.

I looked back at Daniel.

“What would happen to me?””

He whispered,

“You would keep your shares.””

I laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

“While someone else controlled everything.””

“It would have protected you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It would have protected you.””

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the Mercer estate looked exactly the same.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Untouchable.

But now I saw it differently.

A monument built on borrowed time.

“You all thought I was going to sign away my future.””

Nobody spoke.

“You thought I would trust Daniel.””

Silence.

“You thought my father’s protections were useless because I didn’t know about them.””

I turned around.

“But you missed one thing.””

Vivian stared.

“What?””

I smiled slightly.

“My father knew me.””

Nobody moved.

“He knew I would eventually find the truth.””

I picked up the phone.

“I need copies of every document connected to Mercer Development.””

Daniel stood.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Please don’t destroy the company.””

I stared at him.

The irony almost hurt.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“I’m not destroying anything.””

I walked toward the door.

“I’m taking responsibility for something that was mine all along.””

Then my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Emma, we found something else.””

I stepped outside the office.

“What?””

“We reviewed the transfer documents again.””

“And?””

“There is a signature authorization attached.””

My stomach tightened.

“Whose?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yours.””

I closed my eyes.

“That’s impossible.””

“We thought so too.””

“Then why are you calling me?””

“Because the signature wasn’t forged.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The signature is authentic.””

My heart stopped.

“That can’t be.””

“Emma…”

Her voice lowered.

“Someone didn’t copy your signature.””

I felt cold.

“They had access to the original.””

I looked back through the office doorway.

At Daniel.

At Vivian.

At Caroline.

And suddenly the question changed.

It wasn’t who forged my signature.

It was much worse.

Who had been close enough to get my real one?

Rachel continued.

“We traced where the signed document was created.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where?””

A long pause.

Then she said,

“Your apartment.””

I stopped breathing.

“My apartment?””

“Yes.””

The silence that followed felt endless.

Then Rachel added one final sentence.

“Emma, whoever did this wasn’t breaking into your life.””

May you like

My eyes moved toward the front door of the house.

“Because they were already living inside it.””
