Chapter 4: The Marriage Contract Hidden in the Dark
“Your company shares.””
The words echoed through the room.
Not because the bank investigator had said them loudly.
Because everyone heard them.
And everyone reacted.
Vivian’s face went completely blank.
Caroline covered her mouth.
Daniel looked like someone had pulled the ground out from beneath him.
I held the phone tighter.
“Excuse me?””
The investigator’s voice remained professional.
“Mrs. Mercer, according to the documents submitted eight months ago, ownership rights were transferred through a restructuring agreement.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I understand why you would say that.””
“No. You don’t understand.””
My voice shook.
“My company shares cannot be transferred without my signature.””
There was a pause.
Then she said,
“That is why we contacted you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the floor.
“Who submitted the documents?””
The investigator answered carefully.
“Your husband.””
The room became silent.
I didn’t feel anger anymore.
That was the strangest part.
I expected rage.
I expected screaming.
Instead, I felt empty.
A quiet emptiness that came when something you loved finally died.
I had spent four years defending Daniel.
Against his family.
Against outsiders.
Against my own doubts.
And now the person I protected was the one holding the knife.
“Mrs. Mercer?””
The investigator’s voice brought me back.
“Yes.””
“We need you to come into the branch tomorrow morning with identification and original financial records.””
“Why?””
“Because there are questions regarding whether those documents were authorized.””
I swallowed.
“Questions?””
“Yes.””
The word was careful.
Professional.
But I understood what it meant.
Someone had done something serious.
Something that could not be explained away at a family dinner.
“I’ll be there.””
After I ended the call, nobody spoke.
I placed my phone on the table.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“Four years.””
He looked up.
“What?””
“Four years I was married to you.””
His face tightened.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name like you still have the right to comfort me.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn’t apologize.
Not this time.
“You signed documents with my identity.””
“I didn’t—”
“Stop.””
My voice cut through his.
“You don’t get to start explaining before you admit what happened.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Because he knew.
For once, he knew there was no easy version of the truth.
Caroline suddenly stood.
“Emma, please.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“There’s more.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course there is.””
She flinched.
I hated that I felt sorry for her.
Because sympathy was how I had gotten here.
I had always found reasons for people.
Daniel was under pressure.
Vivian was controlling because she cared.
Caroline was just caught in the middle.
But maybe those explanations were just another way of ignoring reality.
“What else?”” I asked.
Caroline looked at Daniel.
He shook his head slightly.
A warning.
I noticed.
So did she.
And then something changed.
Caroline straightened.
“No.””
Daniel frowned.
“No?””
“I can’t keep doing this.””
Her voice trembled.
“But you already did.””
The guilt on her face deepened.
“Emma…”
“Tell me.””
She took a breath.
“The restructuring agreement wasn’t only about your shares.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
Caroline looked toward the hallway.
Like she wanted to run.
Then she whispered,
“It was supposed to protect the family if the company collapsed.””
I stared at her.
“Protect them with my assets.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I turned to Daniel.
“Did you plan to divorce me after taking control?””
His face changed instantly.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
“I never planned that.””
“Then what was the end goal?””
“I was trying to save everything.””
“Everything except me.””
“That’s not fair.””
I looked at him.
“Fair?””
I almost couldn’t believe he said that word.
“You secretly used my money.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Silence.
“After you transferred my company shares?””
“Emma—”
“When?””
He couldn’t answer.
Because the truth was obvious.
He was never going to tell me.
Not unless he was forced.
Vivian stepped closer.
“You are being emotional.””
I turned toward her.
“You assaulted me tonight.””
Her expression hardened.
“I did not assault you.””
“Then what would you call grabbing my arm and throwing me onto the floor?””
The family members around the table shifted.
For the first time, they looked uncomfortable with Vivian.
Not because they cared about me.
Because they were afraid of being associated with what happened.
Vivian lowered her voice.
“You should be careful with accusations.””
I stared at her.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No.””
She smiled faintly.
“I’m reminding you that the Mercer family has influence.””
There it was.
The threat hidden behind manners.
I nodded slowly.
“Thank you.””
She frowned.
“For what?””
“For reminding me exactly who I’m dealing with.””
I picked up my laptop.
“I spent years trying to become part of this family.””
I looked around the room.
“But you never wanted a family member.””
I looked at Vivian.
“You wanted a resource.””
Then Daniel.
“You wanted a solution.””
Then Caroline.
“You wanted someone else to carry the guilt.””
Caroline looked down.
I walked toward the door.
“Emma.””
I stopped.
Daniel’s voice was behind me.
I didn’t turn around.
“What?””
“I love you.””
The words should have meant something.
Once, they would have.
I waited.
For a second.
Maybe for some part of me to believe him.
But then I remembered the documents.
The stolen money.
The signature.
The lies.
I looked over my shoulder.
“Love without honesty is just a prettier way to control someone.””
Daniel looked like I had slapped him.
I opened the door.
And walked out.
The cold night air hit my face.
For the first time in years, I was outside the Mercer mansion without carrying their problems with me.
But I wasn’t free yet.
Because the next morning, I sat across from the bank investigator and learned just how deep the betrayal went.
The woman introduced herself as Rachel Dawson.
She placed a thick folder on the table.
“I want you to understand something before we begin.””
I nodded.
“What?””
“These documents are sophisticated.””
My hands tightened.
Meaning?
“Meaning?””
She opened the folder.
“The signatures, the notarization, the identity verification… someone put significant effort into making this appear legitimate.””
“So someone planned this.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Not because I suspected it.
Because hearing it made it real.
She turned the pages.
“There are several transactions connected to the restructuring agreement.””
“How many?””
“Five major transfers.””
“From me?””
“Indirectly.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She pointed to a document.
“Your shares were used as security.””
“For what?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she pushed another paper toward me.
A loan agreement.
The borrower name was clear.
*Mercer Development Holdings.*
The collateral was listed below.
My shares.
My property.
My accounts.
But something else caught my attention.
A signature.
Not mine.
Not exactly.
It looked close.
Almost perfect.
But I knew my own handwriting.
That wasn’t my signature.
“Rachel.””
“Yes?””
“This was forged.””
She nodded.
“We believe so.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why hasn’t anyone been arrested?””
“Because we need evidence connecting the person who created these documents to the person who submitted them.””
I looked down.
The answer was obvious.
But I needed proof.
Not suspicion.
Not anger.
Proof.
Rachel flipped to another page.
“There is one more thing.””
“What?””
She turned the document around.
“This account was accessed from a device registered to your home.””
My blood went cold.
“My home?””
“Yes.””
“Whose device?””
Rachel pointed to the information.
I stared.
Because the answer wasn’t Daniel’s.
It wasn’t Vivian’s.
It wasn’t Caroline’s.
The device belonged to someone I had trusted completely.
Someone who had sat beside me at my wedding.
Someone who had called me family.
I looked at Rachel.
“Are you sure?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt my hands go numb.
“Whose device was it?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Emma…”
I looked at the name.
And everything inside me stopped.
May you like
Because the person who accessed my accounts was not trying to steal from me.
They were trying to erase me.
