Amused

Chapter 5: The Documents in the Locked Drawer

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The phone remained in Daniel’s hand.

The screen had already gone dark, but the words from the stranger’s voice seemed to stay trapped in the room.

*The fake messages were only the first step.*

I looked at Linda.

For the first time since she walked into my kitchen with those screenshots, she didn’t look like she was in control.

She looked scared.

Not worried.

Not offended.

Scared.

Daniel noticed too.

“Mom.””

Linda said nothing.

“Who was that?””

“It was probably someone trying to cause more trouble.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Someone who knows about your plan?””

She looked away.

That was all the answer we needed.

Daniel walked toward the hallway.

“Where’s your office key?””

Linda immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He stopped.

The fear in her voice was louder than any confession.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

Her face tightened.

“I’m your mother.””

“And I’m your son.””

He looked at her.

“But tonight I’m also a husband and a father who almost lost his family because of you.””

Chloe moved closer to me.

I put my arm around her.

I wanted to take her upstairs.

I wanted to protect her from every ugly thing happening around us.

But I also knew something.

Chloe had already seen enough to know something was wrong.

Pretending everything was fine would only make her feel more afraid.

Daniel reached the office door.

It was slightly open.

That made him stop.

Linda always locked that room.

Always.

Even when she left for five minutes to get coffee.

She used to joke that she had “important papers” inside.

I never thought those papers would be about destroying me.

Daniel pushed the door open.

The room smelled like old books and expensive perfume.

Linda’s office was exactly like her.

Perfect.

Organized.

Every object placed carefully.

A room designed to make people believe the person inside had nothing to hide.

Daniel looked around.

“Where?””

Linda stayed in the doorway.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

“Where are the documents?””

“I don’t know what you think you’ll find.””

He looked at her.

“That’s not what I asked.””

She crossed her arms.

“I’m not letting you tear through my personal things.””

I stepped closer.

“Your personal things almost destroyed my life.””

Linda glared at me.

“You’re enjoying this.””

The accusation was so unbelievable I almost didn’t respond.

“Enjoying what?””

“Seeing Daniel finally question me.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice became quieter.

“I’m devastated.””

For a moment, she looked surprised.

Maybe she expected anger.

Maybe she expected revenge.

But what hurt most wasn’t seeing Linda exposed.

It was realizing how much damage one person could cause when they decided another person’s happiness was something they had the right to control.

Daniel opened the desk drawers.

Nothing.

Only bills.

Old letters.

A notebook.

Then he pulled the bottom drawer.

It didn’t move.

Locked.

He looked at Linda.

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Daniel reached out his hand.

“Key.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at her.

“You just made this much worse.””

Linda’s voice lowered.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

“Explain why you’re hiding a locked drawer.””

She looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at Chloe.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I knew nobody would understand.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. You knew nobody would approve.””

Linda’s eyes flashed.

“You think I’m the villain now?””

Nobody answered.

Because she had already shown us who she was through her actions.

Daniel called his lawyer.

I didn’t know when he had saved the number.

I didn’t know when he decided he needed help.

I only knew that the same man who had thrown my suitcase outside the door was now standing between me and the person who tried to take everything from me.

While we waited, Chloe sat on the couch with her tablet.

She looked exhausted.

I sat beside her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

Then shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I held her hand.

“That’s honest.””

She looked at me.

“Did Grandma hate you?””

The question broke my heart.

“No.””

“Then why did she do that?””

I searched for the right words.

Because children deserve truth.

But they don’t deserve adult cruelty.

“Sometimes people become so afraid of losing something that they make bad choices.””

Chloe looked down.

“But she could have hurt us.””

“Yes.””

“She almost made Daddy hate you.””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

She was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“I thought families were supposed to protect each other.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“They are.””

Her voice was small.

“What if they don’t?””

I didn’t have an easy answer.

So I gave her the only honest one.

“Then we learn who truly does.””

About twenty minutes later, Daniel’s lawyer arrived.

A woman named Karen who had represented Daniel’s company for years.

She walked into the house, took one look at everyone’s faces, and immediately knew something serious had happened.

Daniel handed her the tablet.

Then the phone.

Then explained everything.

Karen didn’t react emotionally.

She just studied the evidence.

Finally, she looked at Linda.

“Do you have access to the house documents?””

Linda said nothing.

Karen’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s a yes or no question.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I’ve always helped manage family paperwork.””

Karen nodded.

“And did you prepare any documents involving ownership transfer, custody, or marital separation?””

Linda’s silence lasted too long.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mom.””

Linda looked away.

Karen turned to him.

“I need to see that drawer.””

Daniel looked at the locked drawer.

Then at Linda.

“Open it.””

Linda didn’t move.

Karen spoke calmly.

“If you refuse, we can take the necessary legal steps to preserve evidence.””

That finally changed something.

Linda slowly reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small key.

The sound of the lock turning was louder than it should have been.

Daniel opened the drawer.

Inside were folders.

Several of them.

He pulled out the first one.

The label made my breath stop.

*EMILY CARTER — FAMILY MATTER*

My name.

On a folder inside Linda’s locked desk.

Daniel opened it.

The first pages were copies of my identification documents.

My property papers.

My house records.

My personal information.

My hands started shaking.

“How did you get these?””

Linda didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at the next document.

Then his face went completely blank.

“What is this?””

Karen took it from him.

She read the page.

And for the first time that night, even the calm lawyer looked disturbed.

“What?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“It’s a custody agreement.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Karen turned the page.

“This appears to be a draft petition.””

“For what?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Emergency custody of Chloe.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You planned to take my daughter?””

Linda’s voice shook.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was colder than I had ever heard it.

“You were trying to take her.””

Karen continued reading.

“There’s more.””

She looked at the last page.

Then frowned.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She slowly handed him the document.

“There’s a section naming a witness.””

Daniel looked down.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

Because the witness wasn’t Rachel.

It wasn’t Linda.

It wasn’t someone connected to the family.

It was someone who had been standing beside me for months.

Someone who had been helping me through my marriage problems.

Someone who had told me:

“I’m on your side.””

Daniel whispered the name.

And when I saw who it was, I realized the betrayal was much bigger than I thought.

May you like

Because Linda hadn’t just built a plan to remove me.

She had built a plan where everyone I trusted would help her do it.
