Chapter 4: The Lie They Wanted Me to Live With
Daniel read the message three times.
I watched his eyes move across the screen.
Once.
Then again.
Then slower.
Like his mind was trying to reject what his eyes were seeing.
The rest of us stood frozen in the doorway.
Rachel looked like she wanted to disappear.
Linda looked like she was searching for a way out.
And Chloe stood beside me, holding my hand so tightly that her fingers hurt.
But I didn’t tell her to let go.
Because at that moment, I needed her as much as she needed me.
Daniel finally lowered the tablet.
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Rachel.””
She looked up.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
The word stopped her.
He shook his head.
“No more explanations.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, please.””
“You knew.””
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
His laugh was bitter.
“My wife almost got thrown out of her own home.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Emily, I swear, I never wanted that.””
I stared at her.
“Then what did you want?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no answer that would make sense.
People always say they didn’t mean for things to go too far.
But what they usually mean is they didn’t expect to get caught.
I looked at the message again.
The words were still there.
*“Once Emily is out of the house, we need to make sure Daniel never hears the real story…”*
The real story.
They weren’t just trying to create a lie.
They were trying to bury the truth.
Daniel turned toward Linda.
“How long?””
She frowned.
“What?””
“How long have you been planning this?””
Linda sighed.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I asked you a question.””
Her expression changed.
“I was trying to save my family.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were trying to control it.””
Linda’s eyes narrowed.
“You think Emily has never controlled you?””
I felt my jaw tighten.
Even now.
Even with everything exposed.
She still couldn’t stop.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“You don’t get to change the subject.””
“I’m your mother.””
“And she’s my wife.””
The room became silent.
Linda looked at him like those words hurt more than any accusation.
“You would choose her over me?””
Daniel closed his eyes for a second.
Then opened them.
“This isn’t about choosing.””
“Of course it is.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“This is about you hurting someone because you couldn’t accept that my life changed.””
Linda looked away.
For a moment, I saw something almost like regret.
Almost.
Then it disappeared.
“I gave you everything.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And I spent years trying to repay you.””
His voice softened.
“But I never agreed to belong to you.””
The sentence landed harder than any shouting could have.
Because it wasn’t angry.
It was final.
Rachel wiped her cheeks.
“Emily…”
I turned toward her.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“I know you’re hurt.””
“Hurt?””
My voice came out sharper than I intended.
“You helped someone create fake evidence that I cheated on my husband.””
“I know.””
“You knew how much my marriage meant to me.””
“I know.””
“You knew Chloe would be affected.””
Rachel looked down.
“I didn’t think—”
“That’s the problem.””
My voice broke.
“You didn’t think about me at all.””
For years, Rachel and I had been close.
Not perfect.
Not without disagreements.
But close.
When our parents divorced, we had each other.
When I got married, she helped me choose my dress.
When Chloe was born, Rachel was the first person outside the hospital room.
She had been there for every important moment.
And now I was realizing something painful.
Someone can stand beside you for years and still not be loyal to you.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Your mother promised she could help me.””
“With what?””
Rachel hesitated.
Linda immediately looked at her.
A warning.
A silent command.
Daniel noticed.
“What did she promise you?””
Rachel looked trapped.
Then she whispered:
“A job.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I’ve been struggling financially.””
I stared.
“You never told me.””
“Because I was embarrassed.””
“So you helped destroy my life for money?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Rachel covered her face.
“She said if Daniel believed you abandoned the family, things would change.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
I felt a chill move through me.
Because there was still something they hadn’t told us.
Something worse.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Rachel.””
She looked at him.
“What was the second part of the plan?””
Rachel looked at Linda.
Linda’s face became pale.
“Don’t.””
Daniel’s eyes sharpened.
“You already destroyed my trust. Don’t protect her now.””
Rachel whispered:
“They wanted you to file for divorce.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“They said once Emily was gone, you would believe she left willingly.””
I felt sick.
Rachel continued.
“They wanted you to file first.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“Because they said it would make everything easier.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Easier for what?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
The answer was already there.
The house.
The custody.
The story.
They wanted me to look guilty.
They wanted me to look like the person who walked away.
They wanted everyone to believe I abandoned my family.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?””
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“I mean about the divorce.””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
And for the first time that night, I believed him.
Because Daniel looked devastated.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Devastated.
He looked at the suitcase still sitting outside.
The suitcase he had thrown out.
The suitcase that had almost become proof of a lie.
“I almost did it,” he whispered.
Nobody spoke.
“I almost destroyed everything.””
I looked away.
Because I didn’t know what to say.
An apology couldn’t erase the image of him standing there, ordering me out.
But I also knew the man standing in front of me now was different from the man who had opened that door.
The truth had forced him to see what he didn’t want to see.
A sudden sound came from inside the house.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
Linda froze.
Not her phone.
Daniel looked around.
Then walked back inside.
The ringing was coming from the kitchen counter.
A phone I had never seen before.
He picked it up.
The screen lit up.
No name.
Just a number.
Linda immediately moved toward him.
“Don’t answer that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
She stopped.
Because she knew.
He pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
A voice none of us recognized.
“Is Emily still in the house?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I’m sorry, who is this?””
The caller ignored him.
“Because if she is, you need to know something.””
Everyone gathered closer.
The voice continued.
“Linda wasn’t supposed to get caught this early.””
Linda’s eyes widened.
Daniel looked at her.
The caller took a breath.
“And if she has been exposed, you need to check the documents in her desk.””
A pause.
Then the final words came through the speaker.
“The fake messages were only the first step.””
The call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody moved.
Then he looked toward the hallway.
May you like
Toward Linda’s office.
And for the first time that night, Linda looked genuinely afraid.
