Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden Before My Birth

The words stayed on the screen.

*THE FALCON PROTOCOL WAS CREATED FOR YOU.*

Not Lily.

Not the company.

Me.

I stared at the message until the letters blurred.

For days, I had believed every secret in my family began with my daughter.

But maybe Lily was never the beginning.

Maybe she was the reason someone wanted the past buried.

“What is the Falcon Protocol?”” I asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Thomas looked at my mother.

My mother looked at the screen.

And suddenly I understood.

They were both afraid.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“Thomas.””

He finally looked at me.

“The Falcon Protocol was your father’s final protection plan.””

“For what?””

He hesitated.

“For the Kingsley bloodline.””

I almost laughed.

“Again with the bloodline.””

My voice cracked.

“My whole life, people have told me I was family. Now I find out I’m not Alexander’s biological daughter, and suddenly there’s a secret protection plan built around me?””

My mother stepped closer.

“Mara.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I need the truth, not another reason why I can’t handle it.””

She swallowed.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised me.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time since she returned, my anger softened slightly.

Not disappeared.

But softened.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting she failed me.

Thomas turned back to the computer.

“The Falcon Protocol was created twenty-five years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because your father discovered someone inside the Kingsley organization was trying to manipulate succession.””

“Victor?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Not at first.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He opened another file.

A scanned document appeared.

The title:

*FALCON PROTOCOL: PRIMARY SUBJECT*

Beneath it:

*MARA ALEXANDRA KINGSLEY*

My hands went cold.

The document continued.

*Purpose: Protection of minor heir from hostile inheritance claims.*

I stared.

“Heir?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father considered you his daughter and his heir.””

“But I wasn’t his biological child.””

“No.””

His voice was gentle.

“But Alexander Kingsley believed family was built through loyalty, not genetics.””

I looked away.

That sounded exactly like him.

My father was the man who adopted me.

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me how to run a company.

The man who sat beside my bed when I was sick.

The man who taught me that names mattered because of what people did with them.

Not because of what was written on a paper.

“Then why hide my birth?””

My mother answered.

“Because your birth was connected to someone who could destroy the Kingsley family.””

The room went quiet.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Your biological father.””

I stopped.

“You know who he is?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

My mother looked toward Lily.

Then back at me.

“His name was Daniel Cross.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Thomas reacted.

A slight change.

A flicker.

“You know him.””

Thomas looked away.

“Everyone in the old Kingsley circle knew him.””

“Who was he?””

My mother answered.

“He was Alexander’s closest business partner.””

I felt a strange chill.

“My father’s partner?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She looked at the document.

“Daniel died before you were born.””

“How?””

Silence.

Then:

“Your father believed he was murdered.””

The room became still.

Another death.

Another secret.

Another person connected to my family who disappeared.

“By who?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Because the answer was already obvious.

“Victor.””

She nodded slowly.

“We suspected.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I never wanted to believe it.””

I looked at him.

“You suspected my uncle for years.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I had no proof.””

I looked at the screen.

“But now you do.””

Thomas nodded.

“The Falcon Protocol was created because your father believed someone would eventually come after you.””

“Why?””

“Because if they controlled you, they controlled the company.””

I looked down at Lily.

Everything came back to her.

Grant wasn’t trying to destroy me because he hated me.

He was trying to destroy me because I was the lock.

And Lily was the key.

A notification appeared.

The file had unlocked.

Everyone turned.

A new folder opened.

*ORIGIN OF THE FALCON HEIR*

My mother whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped back.

“That file should not exist.””

“Why?””

“Because Alexander deleted it.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Then someone restored it.””

The screen loaded.

A video appeared.

A date.

The day I was born.

My hands moved to my mouth.

My father appeared on screen.

Younger.

Healthy.

Alive.

I had never seen this recording.

He was sitting in his office.

Looking directly at the camera.

“Mara.””

Hearing my name from him almost broke me.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you.””

My eyes filled.

The recording continued.

“But if I failed, it means someone else succeeded in making you doubt yourself.””

My father looked down briefly.

“I need you to understand something.””

He leaned closer.

“You were never chosen because of your blood.””

A pause.

“You were chosen because of your heart.””

I closed my eyes.

A tear fell.

Even now.

Even after death.

He was still trying to protect me.

The video continued.

“When I first met Daniel Cross, he had nothing. No family. No wealth. No position.””

My mother looked away.

“But he had one thing.””

My father smiled faintly.

“Integrity.””

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

A man.

Daniel Cross.

I stared.

Because there was something familiar.

Something about his eyes.

“He and your mother were targeted because they discovered corruption inside Kingsley Group.””

My heart pounded.

“Someone was stealing from the company.””

Thomas whispered:

“Victor.””

My father continued.

“I adopted Mara legally because the people responsible believed eliminating Daniel would end the problem.””

My breath caught.

“But they underestimated something.””

He smiled.

“Mara was stronger than anyone expected.””

The video paused.

Then the final message appeared.

*If Grant Kingsley ever attempts to remove Mara from power, activate Falcon Protocol.*

I froze.

Grant’s name.

My father knew.

He knew Grant would betray me.

Years before I did.

The recording continued.

“Grant is not the first person to underestimate my daughter.””

My father’s expression became serious.

“He is simply the latest.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then the computer flashed.

*Falcon Protocol activated.*

A new document appeared.

*Emergency Authority Transfer.*

Thomas stepped closer.

“What is that?””

I read the first line.

My heart stopped.

*Upon activation, all Kingsley Group authority temporarily transfers to the protected heir.*

I looked at Thomas.

“The heir.””

He nodded.

“You.””

For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something different.

Not fear.

Power.

Not the kind Grant wanted.

Not the kind that came from money.

The kind that came from knowing the truth.

My phone buzzed.

A message from the courthouse.

The emergency hearing had started.

Already.

Grant was waiting.

I looked at Lily.

Then at the screen.

Then at my mother.

“I’m going.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Mara, you need evidence.””

“I have evidence.””

“You have secrets.””

I looked at the Falcon Protocol.

“No.””

I picked up the documents.

“I have the truth.””

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Mara.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

The words caught me off guard.

“For what?””

“For letting you believe you were alone.””

I stared at her.

The woman who disappeared.

The woman who lied.

The woman who had still come back.

“I was alone.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

A long silence passed.

Then Lily reached for my hand.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Are we going home?””

I looked at my daughter.

At the little girl who had no idea how much people had fought over her.

“Yes.””

I kissed her forehead.

“We’re going home.””

As we left the archive, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

Not Grant.

Not Victor.

Someone older.

Someone calm.

“Mara Kingsley.””

I stopped walking.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows why your father really died.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

The man continued.

“Before you go to court, you need to know one thing.””

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“Grant isn’t trying to prove you’re unfit.””

I froze.

“Then what is he trying to do?””

The answer came quietly.

“He’s trying to make the court declare Lily’s true identity.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then the words that changed everything:

“Because Lily isn’t just your daughter.””

I looked at her.

The man continued.

“She is the final heir to the original Kingsley bloodline.””

The call ended.

And for the first time, I understood.

May you like

Grant wasn’t trying to take my child.

He was trying to take a dynasty.
