Amused

Chapter 2: The Falcon File

The first thing I learned after opening the Falcon File was that my husband’s betrayal had started long before I discovered the affair.

It had started while I was pregnant.

The Kingsley family archives were hidden beneath the oldest building in our company’s headquarters, behind a door most employees never knew existed.

My father used to tell me that every empire had two versions.

The one people saw.

And the one that kept it alive.

I had always believed the hidden side of Kingsley Group was about finances, contracts, and security.

I never imagined it contained a record of the man I married.

The elevator descended silently.

Lily slept against my chest, her small hand wrapped around the edge of my coat.

I hated that she had to be there.

I hated that my daughter’s first experience with a family crisis was being carried through a secret underground floor beneath a company her grandfather built.

But I hated something else more.

The fact that Grant had planned to take her from me.

The elevator doors opened.

A man in a dark suit stood waiting.

“Mrs. Kingsley.””

I recognized him immediately.

Thomas Reed.

My father’s head of security.

He had worked for Alexander Kingsley for thirty years.

When my father died, Thomas disappeared from daily operations.

Not because he was gone.

Because my father had ordered him to wait.

At the time, I thought that was strange.

Now I understood.

“Thomas,” I said.

His eyes moved to Lily.

Then back to me.

“Is it true?””

I didn’t need to ask what he meant.

“Yes.””

His expression tightened.

“Grant betrayed you.””

I swallowed.

“He tried to take my daughter.””

For the first time in all the years I had known Thomas, I saw anger cross his face.

Not loud anger.

The dangerous kind.

“The file has been waiting for your authorization.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked toward the steel door behind him.

“Because your father knew Grant was capable of this.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Thomas didn’t argue.

He simply looked at me.

“Mara, your father never trusted easily.””

“He trusted Grant.””

“He trusted the man Grant pretended to be.””

That sentence followed me as we entered the archive room.

The room was exactly how I remembered it from childhood.

Dark wooden shelves.

Old photographs.

Family records.

A massive desk where my father used to work late into the night.

But now there was something else.

A single black folder sitting in the center of the desk.

My name was written on it.

MARA ALEXANDRA KINGSLEY.

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Because he believed telling you would put you in danger.””

I looked at him.

“From my husband?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

I placed Lily gently on the leather sofa nearby.

She shifted but didn’t wake.

Then I walked to the desk.

My fingers touched the folder.

For years, I had believed my father’s greatest fear was losing the company.

I was wrong.

His greatest fear was losing me.

I opened the file.

The first page was a photograph.

Grant.

Young.

Confident.

Standing beside my father at a business event.

My stomach twisted.

The next page was a background report.

Not a criminal record.

Something worse.

A pattern.

Financial problems.

Hidden debts.

Secret meetings.

Investments that failed before Grant joined Kingsley Group.

I turned another page.

Then another.

My hands became colder with every line.

“Grant came to your father with nothing,” Thomas said.

“He told everyone he was ambitious. Brilliant. Determined.””

I looked up.

“And my father believed him.””

“At first.””

I looked back down.

There were notes written in my father’s handwriting.

My father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had signed my birthday cards.

The same handwriting that had written letters after my mother died.

One sentence was underlined.

*Grant Kingsley does not love power. He loves what power gives him access to.*

I closed my eyes.

The pain was different now.

Before, I had thought Grant stopped loving me.

Now I wondered if he ever loved me at all.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Thomas immediately moved toward the door.

“Who else knows we are here?””

“No one.””

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

My heart stopped.

Sienna Vale.

She was no longer wearing the confident expression from the hotel lobby.

Her gold dress was replaced by a black coat.

Her hair was messy.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

Thomas moved between us.

“How did you get in here?””

Sienna looked at me.

“I need to talk to Mara.””

I laughed quietly.

“After today?””

Her face tightened.

“You think I came here to apologize?””

“No,” I said.

“I think you came here because Grant stopped protecting you.””

That hit something.

Sienna looked away.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Leave.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“If you don’t listen to me, Grant will destroy everything.””

I stared at her.

“You mean everything he hasn’t already destroyed?””

Sienna’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Grant was never planning to leave you.””

The room became silent.

I frowned.

“What?””

Sienna looked at the Falcon File.

“He was planning to control you.””

A chill moved through me.

“How?””

She walked closer.

“By making everyone believe you were unstable.””

I already knew that.

The custody papers.

The accusations.

The lies.

But Sienna continued.

“He wasn’t just preparing a custody case.””

My throat tightened.

“What else?””

She looked directly at me.

“He was preparing a medical petition.””

The words didn’t make sense at first.

“A what?””

“He wanted the court to appoint someone to control your financial decisions.””

I stared at her.

Because suddenly the pieces connected.

The custody papers.

The false claims.

The affair.

It wasn’t just about my daughter.

It was about the company.

Grant wanted me removed.

As a mother.

As a wife.

As the person controlling Kingsley Group.

Sienna spoke quietly.

“He told me once that after you were declared unstable, the board would have no choice.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“No choice to do what?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Transfer control.””

The room felt smaller.

“Transfer control to who?””

Sienna looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something unexpected.

Regret.

“Grant.””

I turned away.

Not because I was weak.

Because I needed one second to breathe.

My father had built everything to protect our family.

And my husband had spent years trying to take it.

I looked at Sienna.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Her face changed.

The confidence returned slightly.

But this time it looked like a mask.

“Because Grant lied to me too.””

I said nothing.

“He promised me he would leave you.””

“When?””

“After the company transfer.””

I stared.

“And you believed him?””

Her eyes dropped.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“I knew he was using me.””

“Then why?””

Sienna looked toward Lily.

“Because I thought being chosen was better than being discarded.””

Her honesty almost made me feel sorry for her.

Almost.

A phone vibrated.

Everyone froze.

It wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Thomas’s.

It was coming from the Falcon File.

Impossible.

I stepped closer.

A small device hidden inside the folder lit up.

A recorded message began playing.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“Mara, if you are hearing this, then Grant Kingsley has made his move.””

My breath caught.

I hadn’t heard my father’s voice in four years.

Not like this.

Not when I needed him most.

“You may be angry. You may feel betrayed. But listen carefully.””

The recording paused.

Then continued.

“Grant is not the only person involved.””

I looked at Thomas.

He looked confused.

My father’s voice became quieter.

“There is someone inside the Kingsley family who helped him.””

My blood ran cold.

Inside the family?

The recording continued.

“And Mara…”

A pause.

Long enough to feel like a warning.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you.””

The message ended.

No explanation.

No name.

Just silence.

Then Thomas’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Mrs. Kingsley…”

“What happened?””

His face was pale.

“Someone accessed the private family vault.””

I stood frozen.

“The vault?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Thomas looked at the screen.

Then slowly lifted his eyes.

“The system identified the access code.””

My fingers tightened.

“Whose code?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then said the one thing I never expected.

“Yours.””

Before I could respond, Lily suddenly woke up.

Her sleepy eyes opened.

“Mommy?””

I turned toward her.

“I’m here, sweetheart.””

She looked past me.

At the Falcon File.

At the room.

Then she whispered something that made everyone go silent.

“Mommy…”

May you like

Her tiny voice trembled.

“Why did Daddy say I wasn’t really yours?””
