Amused

Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Report

The knock came again.

Three sharp sounds against the front door.

Not a request.

A command.

“Naomi?””

Detective Harris’s voice came from outside.

But my attention wasn’t on him.

It was still on the computer screen.

The frozen image.

The blurry figure behind Lauren.

The person who had been there the night my children died.

The person who had somehow disappeared from every version of the story.

Cameron stood beside me, staring at the screen.

His face was empty.

Like his mind was trying to reject what his eyes already knew.

“You know who that is?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

“Cameron.””

His lips parted.

“No.””

The word came out like a denial.

Not an answer.

I stepped closer.

“You recognize them.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

But his eyes betrayed him.

He did recognize them.

The door shook slightly from another knock.

“Naomi, open the door.””

I looked at Cameron.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know.””

“Didn’t know what?””

“That person was involved.””

“Involved with what?””

He looked at the screen again.

Then finally said:

“Everything.””

I opened the door.

Detective Harris stood there with Detective Collins.

But they weren’t alone.

A woman stood behind them.

An older woman.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had held my hands at the funeral.

Someone who had cried with me.

My husband’s mother.

Evelyn Miller.

My mother-in-law.

I froze.

“No.””

Evelyn looked down.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Naomi…”

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Detective Harris looked at me carefully.

“Mrs. Miller, we need to talk.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why is she here?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence told me everything.

I turned toward Cameron.

“You knew?””

His face changed.

“Naomi—”

“You knew?””

“No.””

But his voice was weak.

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone says no.””

Detective Harris stepped inside.

“We need everyone to stay calm.””

I looked at him.

“Calm?””

My voice broke.

“My children are dead.””

Nobody spoke.

“Someone changed the accident report.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“That’s correct.””

“Who?””

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at her.

“You?””

She couldn’t look at me.

“I never wanted this.””

The words made my hands shake.

“You never wanted what?””

She sat down slowly.

“I never wanted my family destroyed.””

I felt anger rising.

“Your family?””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“My children were my family.””

She started crying.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Detective Harris opened a folder.

“We found evidence that the original accident report was altered.””

“By her?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Cameron looked at his mother.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at him.

And the sadness on her face was almost worse than guilt.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

The sentence made me sick.

Another person.

Another excuse.

Another lie disguised as love.

Detective Harris placed documents on the table.

“The first report stated there were signs of mechanical interference with the vehicle.””

I stared.

“What?””

Cameron looked confused.

“Mechanical interference?””

Detective Collins nodded.

“The vehicle your children were traveling in had a brake issue.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Detective Harris continued.

“The issue was minor at first. But someone modified the system.””

I covered my mouth.

“My children…”

He nodded.

“We believe the crash was not a random accident.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

Cameron grabbed the table.

“Who did it?””

Detective Harris looked at Evelyn.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

I turned toward her.

“Why did you change the report?””

Evelyn’s face crumbled.

“Because Victor threatened us.””

The name filled the room.

Victor.

Again.

Always Victor.

“What did he threaten?””

She looked at Cameron.

Then at me.

“He knew about Cameron’s debts.””

Cameron looked down.

“He knew about everything.””

Evelyn continued.

“He told me if the truth came out, Cameron would go to prison.””

I stared at her.

“So you protected him.””

“I was his mother.””

“And my children?””

Her tears fell.

“I thought they were safe.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You thought?””

Her voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

Detective Harris looked at Cameron.

“Mr. Miller, there’s something else.””

Cameron looked exhausted.

“What?””

“We found evidence that someone accessed your insurance records before the policies were purchased.””

His expression changed.

“Who?””

Detective Collins answered.

“Victor Hale.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

But then Detective Harris continued.

“And someone else.””

The room went quiet.

“Who?””

He looked at Evelyn.

“Your mother.””

Cameron stared.

“What?””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“No.””

Detective Harris placed another document on the table.

“A transfer.””

He pointed to the page.

“Money was moved from Victor’s company to an account connected to Evelyn Miller.””

Cameron stepped back.

“Mom?””

She started crying.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“Then what was it?””

“I was paying him.””

“For what?””

“To leave you alone.””

Cameron looked destroyed.

“You paid Victor?””

“I had no choice.””

“You never told me?””

“I was trying to fix it.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Cameron.

Then at Evelyn.

Everyone had been trying to fix something.

Everyone had been making choices behind closed doors.

And every secret had led us here.

“To my children.””

The words came out quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

“That’s what all of this became.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Later that evening, after detectives left with Evelyn, Cameron and I sat in the living room.

For the first time in days, there were no accusations.

No shouting.

Just exhaustion.

“I’m sorry.””

Cameron’s voice was barely audible.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For everything.””

I didn’t answer.

“I should have told you about Lauren.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told you about Victor.””

“Yes.””

“I should have gone to the police.””

“Yes.””

Each answer hurt him.

But I needed him to hear it.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed the truth to exist.

“I loved you.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

“But I don’t know who you are anymore.””

His eyes filled.

“I don’t either.””

That was the saddest thing he had ever said.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Detective Harris.

I opened it.

*We found the person who was with Lauren in the security footage.*

My heartbeat increased.

I showed Cameron.

His face changed.

Another message appeared.

*It wasn’t Victor.*

A third message.

*It wasn’t Evelyn.*

Then:

*Naomi, we need you to come to the station immediately.*

I stared at the screen.

“Who was it?””

Cameron whispered.

I opened the final message.

The answer was only one name.

A name that made both of us freeze.

*The person in the video was Daniel Brooks.*

The insurance claims specialist.

The man who had helped me uncover the policies.

The man who acted like he was helping.

The man who had been asking questions about my children before anyone else knew.

I looked at Cameron.

And for the first time, we were afraid of the same person.

May you like

Because the man who knew the most about the insurance money…

Was the man who had been closest to the evidence.
