Amused

Chapter 5: The Picture Taken Before the Tragedy

The woman stood in our doorway holding a photograph of my children.

Not a photograph from my phone.

Not one of the hundreds of pictures stored in family albums.

Not one of the smiling faces I knew by heart.

This picture was different.

Because Ethan and Emma were not smiling.

They were looking somewhere outside the frame.

And behind them was a place I recognized.

Our backyard.

My fingers tightened around the edge of the kitchen chair.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked past me.

Her eyes landed on Cameron.

And whatever she saw on his face told her everything.

“You didn’t tell her.””

Cameron didn’t move.

“Rachel, leave.””

Rachel.

My heart dropped.

The woman from the doorway was Rachel Hayes.

The same woman who had met me at the coffee shop.

The same woman who had warned me that Cameron didn’t act alone.

But she had not told me everything.

Not even close.

I stepped toward her.

“You took this picture?””

Rachel slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

She looked down at the photograph.

“Three weeks before they died.””

The room went silent.

Three weeks.

Before the accident.

Before the funeral.

Before my world collapsed.

I looked at Cameron.

“You knew she had this?””

His face was pale.

“Naomi, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“Why does she have a picture of our children?””

Cameron opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rachel stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For waiting.””

The anger inside me rose.

“Waiting for what?””

“For the right time.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken sound.

“My children are dead. There is no right time anymore.””

Rachel lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.””

She looked at Cameron.

“He should have told you.””

Cameron shook his head.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I was there.””

The words stopped him.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“You were where?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The day your children died.””

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

I stared at Rachel.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“I wasn’t supposed to be.””

“What does that mean?””

She placed the photograph on the table.

“I worked with Cameron for five years. I knew his business dealings. I knew about the financial problems.””

She glanced at him.

“And I knew when things started getting strange.””

Cameron walked forward.

“Rachel.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t get to scare me anymore.””

That sentence caught my attention.

“Scare you?””

Rachel took a breath.

“Cameron was desperate.””

I looked at my husband.

“Desperate for what?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Money.””

I shook my head.

“I already know about the insurance.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You don’t understand.””

She opened her bag and pulled out another folder.

“He wasn’t just trying to collect insurance money.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

Rachel looked at Cameron.

“Fix a problem.””

“What problem?””

Nobody answered.

Then Cameron finally spoke.

“Enough.””

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“Naomi, you need to leave this alone.””

I stared at him.

“Leave it alone?””

“Yes.””

“Our children are dead.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you asking me to stop?””

His eyes filled with something I couldn’t identify.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

“Because you don’t know who you’re dealing with.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

He looked at Rachel.

Then back at me.

“Victor.””

The name landed like a warning.

Rachel sat at the kitchen table.

For the first time since she entered, she looked exhausted.

Not nervous.

Not afraid.

Just tired.

Like she had carried this secret for too long.

“Victor Hale,” she said.

I listened carefully.

“Cameron’s business partner.””

“What business?””

“Real estate investments.””

I frowned.

“I thought Cameron worked in construction management.””

“He did.””

Rachel folded her hands.

“Until Victor convinced him to start investing.””

“And then?””

“They lost money.””

“How much?””

“Almost three million dollars.””

I looked at Cameron.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Rachel continued.

“Victor promised Cameron he could fix everything.””

“How?””

She looked at the photograph.

“By finding another way.””

A chill moved through me.

“Another way.””

Rachel nodded.

“Cameron started asking questions.””

“What questions?””

“About insurance.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Victor told him there were people who could help him recover.””

I stared at her.

“Recover from losing money?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Rachel looked at me.

“You’re right.””

She pushed the folder toward me.

“Until you see this.””

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Financial transfers.

Messages between Cameron and Victor.

The first few pages were confusing.

Numbers.

Dates.

Contracts.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A message dated one month before Ethan and Emma died.

From Victor.

*“The policies need to be active before anything happens.””*

I stopped breathing.

I read it again.

Then again.

My vision blurred.

“What is this?””

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“I don’t know exactly.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why bring it to me?””

“Because I saw Cameron change.””

I looked at her.

“He became someone else.””

She continued.

“At first, I thought he was just stressed.””

“Because of the money?””

“Yes.””

“But then?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Then I saw him watching your children.””

The sentence made my skin crawl.

“Watching them?””

“Not like a father.””

Silence.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Rachel immediately shook her head.

“I’m not saying he didn’t love them.””

But the damage was done.

Because that was the question I had been trying not to ask.

Could someone love their children and still hurt them?

Could someone hold their hand at night and plan something terrible in the morning?

I looked at Cameron.

“Did you hurt them?””

The question came out quietly.

But it filled the entire room.

His face collapsed.

“No.””

One word.

Instant.

“I would never hurt them.””

For the first time, I believed his fear.

But I still didn’t know if I believed his innocence.

“Then tell me the truth.””

He looked away.

“I can’t.””

My heart broke all over again.

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, you become a target.””

“From who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Cameron.””

His hands shook.

“I made mistakes.””

“What kind of mistakes?””

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

“Then give me one.””

He looked at the photograph on the table.

At our children.

Then he whispered:

“The accident wasn’t supposed to happen that day.””

The room went completely still.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Like she had been afraid he would say it.

I felt my entire body go cold.

“What does that mean?””

Cameron’s eyes filled with tears.

“Naomi…”

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

And I saw the man I married.

The father who used to sing badly while making breakfast.

The man who cried when Ethan said his first word.

The person I thought I knew.

“I wasn’t trying to kill them.””

The sentence shattered something inside me.

Because nobody had asked him that.

Nobody had accused him of that.

Not yet.

I stepped backward.

“Why would you even say that?””

Cameron looked like he wanted to disappear.

Before he could answer, Rachel’s phone rang.

She checked the screen.

Her face immediately changed.

“What?””

I watched her stand.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t respond.

Then she looked at Cameron.

“He knows I’m here.””

Cameron went pale.

“Who?””

Rachel slowly lowered the phone.

“Victor.””

A second later, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

My hands trembled as I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost friendly.

“Naomi Miller?””

I said nothing.

The voice continued.

“You’ve been asking a lot of questions.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Victor Hale.””

I looked at Cameron.

He closed his eyes.

Victor continued.

“And I think it’s time someone finally told you the truth about your husband.””

The call ended.

But before the screen went dark, one final message appeared.

A photograph.

A photograph taken the night Ethan and Emma died.

May you like

And in the background…

I saw Cameron.
