Amused

Chapter 7: My Father's Final Warning

I stared at my father's signature until the letters blurred.

It was impossible.

That was the only thought my mind could form.

Impossible.

My father had signed a document that would transfer parental authority.

My father.

The man who left.

The man who disappeared.

The man who I spent years believing had abandoned me without a second thought.

Why would he sign something that gave Weston power over my child?

My hands shook as I held the paper.

Corinne watched me carefully.

She looked different now.

Not like the woman who had stood in her living room demanding my ATM card.

Not like the woman who had called me selfish.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

"Tell me the truth.""

My voice was quiet.

But it wasn't a question.

"Tell me everything.""

Corinne looked down.

"I don't know everything.""

"Then tell me what you do know.""

She took a slow breath.

"Your father didn't trust many people.""

I almost smiled.

"That's ironic.""

"He trusted the wrong ones.""

I looked at her.

"Was Weston one of them?""

She didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

"What happened?""

Corinne folded her hands.

"Richard came to us three years before he died.""

"My father?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"He knew he was sick.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He had been diagnosed.""

The room became silent.

"My father was sick?""

Corinne nodded.

"He didn't tell you.""

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"No.""

My eyes burned.

"He didn't tell me.""

She looked away.

"He believed staying away would protect you.""

I stared at her.

"Protect me?""

The anger came back.

"By disappearing?""

"Your father had enemies.""

I frowned.

"Enemies?""

"He made mistakes in business. Dangerous mistakes.""

"You're saying he left because he was afraid?""

"Yes.""

I shook my head.

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

Corinne looked at the table.

"Because he thought anyone connected to him could become a target.""

I looked at the document.

"Then why involve Weston?""

Her face tightened.

"Because Richard believed Weston understood what it meant to lose everything.""

That answer made no sense.

"Weston?""

"Yes.""

I leaned forward.

"Explain.""

Corinne sighed.

"Your father and Weston's father were partners. When their company collapsed, both families suffered.""

"I know that.""

"But what you don't know is that Richard spent years trying to fix what happened.""

"By creating this trust?""

"By creating protection for you.""

I looked at the agreement again.

"Then why did he sign this?""

Corinne's eyes moved to the document.

"Because he thought Weston would protect you.""

My chest tightened.

"He was wrong.""

A painful silence followed.

Finally, Corinne nodded.

"Yes.""

The word surprised me.

Because it was the first time she admitted anything.

"He changed.""

"Who?""

"Weston.""

She looked at me.

"After Richard died, Weston became different.""

I remembered.

The small things.

The comments.

The pressure.

The way every conversation somehow returned to money.

"I thought he was stressed.""

"He was.""

"About the company?""

"About losing control.""

I stared at her.

"Control of what?""

She looked at my stomach.

And I understood.

"My child.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"How did he know about the trust?""

"Richard told him.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

My father had trusted him.

And that trust had become a weapon.

"Why didn't you stop him?""

Corinne looked ashamed.

"I tried.""

I looked at her.

"You?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Several times.""

"Then why were you at that wedding meeting asking for my card?""

Her face changed.

Because she knew there was no defense.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of Weston.""

That answer shocked me.

"You were afraid of your own son?""

She looked down.

"Yes.""

The honesty was unsettling.

"My son was angry that Richard's plan didn't give him what he wanted.""

"What did he want?""

"Everything.""

The word hung between us.

"After you became pregnant, he realized the trust was no longer about you.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"He realized your child was the true beneficiary.""

My hand moved to my stomach.

"And?""

"He became desperate.""

I remembered the locked door.

The demand for my card.

The way he looked at me.

Not with love.

With frustration.

"He thought if we married, he could control everything.""

"Yes.""

I looked back at the agreement.

"But my father signed this.""

"Yes.""

"How do I know this isn't some trick?""

Corinne reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this because I didn't know what else to do.""

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"Your father's letter.""

My heart stopped.

"A letter?""

"Written after he signed the agreement.""

I didn't move.

"Why do you have it?""

"Because he gave it to me.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew if something happened, I was the only person who could tell you.""

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My father's.

My fingers trembled as I read.

*Ava,*

*If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth myself. I am sorry for that.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I continued.

*I spent my life believing I could fix mistakes by solving them quietly. I was wrong. Silence only creates new wounds.*

I swallowed.

*The trust I created was never meant to belong to anyone except you and your child. Weston is not the owner. He is not the beneficiary. He is only someone I hoped would protect what matters most.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*But if Weston ever tries to convince you that this money belongs to him, do not believe him.*

I stopped breathing.

The next line felt like a warning written directly for me.

*Love is not measured by what someone says when everything is easy. It is measured by what they protect when nobody is watching.*

I wiped my eyes.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

*Ava, if Weston is the reason you are reading this, then I am afraid I made the same mistake twice. I trusted someone with my daughter's future without knowing whether they deserved it.*

The room disappeared.

My father had known.

Somehow, he had known there was a possibility Weston would betray me.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

*Do not marry a man who needs your inheritance to love you.*

I folded the letter.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Because something inside me had changed.

My father had spent years trying to protect me.

And I had spent years believing he didn't care.

The pain of that realization was almost worse than the betrayal.

"I hate that he was right.""

Corinne looked at me.

"Your father?""

I nodded.

"He knew.""

She was quiet.

Then she said:

"He also left you something else.""

I looked up.

"What?""

She reached into her purse.

"A recording.""

I froze.

"A recording?""

"Yes.""

"Of what?""

"Your father and Weston.""

My heartbeat increased.

"When was it made?""

"The week before Richard died.""

I stared at her.

"Why are you only showing me this now?""

Corinne looked away.

"Because I was a coward.""

The admission surprised me.

"I thought I could fix Weston.""

She shook her head.

"I thought if I helped him succeed, he would become the man he promised to be.""

"And?""

"He didn't.""

She placed a small digital recorder on the table.

"I listened to this once.""

"What did you hear?""

Her face went pale.

"The moment I realized my son wasn't trying to build a future with you.""

She pushed the recorder toward me.

"He was trying to replace you in it.""

I picked it up.

My finger hovered over the play button.

Then I pressed.

Static filled the room.

A man's voice appeared.

My father's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

*"Weston, I need you to understand this clearly. Ava is not a business opportunity.""*

My blood ran cold.

Then Weston answered.

Younger.

But still him.

*"I understand.""*

My father's voice became sharper.

*"No, you don't. If you ever hurt my daughter for access to this trust, everything changes.""*

A pause.

Then Weston spoke.

And the words that came next made my entire body freeze.

*"What if Ava never finds out?""*

I stopped the recording.

I couldn't breathe.

Because for years, I thought I was discovering Weston's betrayal.

But now I understood something worse.

My father had warned him.

Weston knew exactly what he was doing.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Ava.""

His voice was urgent.

"I found the original version of the parental agreement.""

I stood.

"What changed?""

A pause.

Then:

"The one you have is missing a page.""

My heart raced.

"What page?""

"The page that explains why Weston signed it.""

I looked at the recorder in my hand.

"Why?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Because Ava, the original document doesn't transfer authority to Weston.""

I waited.

"Then what does it do?""

His answer came quietly.

"It proves Weston was never supposed to have any control at all.""

I looked at Corinne.

She looked terrified.

"Then why would he need me to sign it?""

Daniel went silent.

And when he finally spoke, his words made my blood run cold.

"Because the missing page says the agreement was designed to remove someone else's rights.""

"Whose?""

A long pause.

May you like

Then:

"Yours.""
