Amused

Chapter 6: The Guardian Clause

The word *guardian* followed me everywhere.

It was in the shower.

In the kitchen.

In the quiet moments when I should have been thinking about baby names and nursery colors.

Guardian.

That was the word my father had chosen.

Not husband.

Not partner.

Not father.

Guardian.

Someone who would have control over my child's inheritance if something happened to me.

And somehow, the man who had hidden my own financial history from me had been placed in that position.

I sat in my car outside Daniel's office for ten minutes before I finally turned off the engine.

I wasn't crying.

That surprised me.

A few weeks ago, the thought of Weston betraying me would have destroyed me.

Now, I felt something stronger.

Clarity.

Pain was still there.

But underneath it was something I hadn't felt in a long time.

Control.

I walked into Daniel's office carrying every document I had.

He stood as soon as he saw me.

"Ava.""

I didn't sit down.

"Show me everything.""

Daniel nodded.

"I was hoping you'd say that.""

He placed a thick folder on the table.

"The original trust documents. The amendments. The guardian appointment. Everything.""

I opened the folder.

The first pages were old.

Yellowed at the edges.

My father's handwriting appeared beside official signatures.

I stared at the familiar letters.

I hadn't seen his handwriting in years.

For a moment, I forgot I was angry.

I was just a daughter looking at something her father left behind.

Then I saw the date.

Five years before he died.

Before I built my company.

Before I met Weston.

Before any of this.

"Why would he choose Weston?""

Daniel sat across from me.

"That's the question.""

"Did he know him?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"Through business.""

I looked through the pages.

"That doesn't explain why he would trust him with my child.""

"No.""

Daniel tapped another document.

"Which is why I looked deeper.""

I turned the page.

"What did you find?""

"Your father didn't originally choose Weston.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"He chose someone else first.""

My heartbeat changed.

"Who?""

Daniel slid a page toward me.

A name was written there.

*Evelyn Bennett.*

"My grandmother?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father's mother.""

I stared.

"My grandmother died before I was born.""

"Yes.""

"So how could she be the guardian?""

"She wasn't.""

I frowned.

"Then why is her name here?""

"Because your father created the trust after a disagreement with his family.""

I read further.

Then I saw the amendment.

My father's signature.

A replacement guardian.

Weston Hale.

"But why?""

Daniel leaned back.

"That's what we need to find out.""

I looked at the document again.

There was a date.

Two months after my father disappeared from my life.

My hands tightened.

"Wait.""

Daniel looked at me.

"My father changed the guardian after he left?""

"Yes.""

"Why would he choose someone connected to Weston's family?""

"I don't know.""

I kept reading.

Then I saw another name.

A witness.

*Corinne Hale.*

My stomach dropped.

"She witnessed this.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"So she knew about the trust from the beginning.""

"Most likely.""

I stood up.

"She knew.""

Daniel didn't stop me.

"Yes.""

"She knew my father created something for my baby.""

"Yes.""

"And she spent months telling me I was selfish for not paying for a wedding?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I understand why you're angry.""

"No.""

I closed the folder.

"You don't.""

He was quiet.

Because he didn't.

Nobody did.

This wasn't just about money.

Money was easy to understand.

This was about someone looking at me every day.

Knowing something important about my life.

And choosing not to tell me.

"I need to talk to Corinne.""

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"Be careful.""

"I need answers.""

"She may not give them.""

"I don't need her to.""

I looked at him.

"I need to see what she does when she realizes I know.""

Corinne agreed to meet me the same afternoon.

That surprised me.

Maybe it shouldn't have.

People who believe they are in control rarely fear confrontation.

She chose a private country club.

Of course she did.

Somewhere expensive.

Somewhere she felt powerful.

When I arrived, she was already sitting at a corner table.

She didn't stand.

Didn't apologize.

Didn't even look uncomfortable.

She simply lifted her coffee cup.

"I wondered how long it would take.""

I sat across from her.

"You knew.""

She didn't pretend.

Not this time.

"Yes.""

The honesty almost shocked me.

"How long?""

"Since before you met Weston.""

I stared at her.

"Before?""

She placed her cup down.

"Your father made mistakes.""

"That is not an answer.""

"It is the truth.""

"My father created a trust for my child.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew Weston was named guardian.""

"Yes.""

"And you said nothing.""

Corinne looked at me.

"You didn't know the whole situation.""

"No.""

I leaned forward.

"You decided I didn't deserve to.""

She sighed.

"You were young.""

"I was twenty-nine.""

"You were emotional.""

"I was building a company.""

"You were vulnerable.""

I almost laughed.

"Vulnerable?""

I pointed at her.

"You watched me pay for everything.""

"We believed you and Weston were building a future.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You believed I was funding one.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"You have always been very defensive about money.""

There it was.

The same accusation.

The same weapon.

"You know what I've learned?""

She said nothing.

"People who want access to your money always call you selfish when you protect it.""

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You don't understand what Weston sacrificed.""

I stared.

"What did he sacrifice?""

"He loved you.""

I smiled sadly.

"Love doesn't require hiding legal documents.""

She looked away.

"Your father wanted to repair what he damaged.""

"By controlling my child's future?""

"By protecting you.""

I froze.

"Protecting me from what?""

Corinne didn't answer.

And suddenly I realized.

She knew something else.

Something bigger.

"What aren't you telling me?""

Her fingers tightened around her cup.

"Ava.""

"What aren't you telling me?""

She looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

"Your father was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"He believed someone was trying to take advantage of you.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

"Was it you?""

"No.""

"Was it Weston?""

Her silence lasted too long.

I stood.

"I knew it.""

"Sit down.""

"No.""

I grabbed my purse.

"You knew someone was dangerous, and you let me marry him.""

Corinne's voice suddenly changed.

Not defensive.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

"Ava, you need to listen to me.""

I stopped.

"What?""

She looked around the room before lowering her voice.

"Weston was never supposed to know about the guardian clause.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He found out later.""

"When?""

"After you got pregnant.""

A chill moved through me.

"Why?""

Her face became pale.

"Because before that, the trust was protected.""

"What changed?""

She whispered:

"The pregnancy.""

I felt my hand move to my stomach.

"Why?""

"Because your father added a final amendment.""

"What amendment?""

Corinne looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely scared.

"If you had a child, the guardian would only have control if the child's mother approved.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Weston never had power over your baby.""

I stared.

"Then why was he still trying to marry me?""

Corinne looked down.

And when she spoke, her voice was barely audible.

"Because he needed you to sign something.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

She reached into her purse.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then placed a folded document on the table.

"I found this in Weston's office last week.""

I didn't touch it.

"What is it?""

Corinne swallowed.

"The marriage agreement.""

My fingers went cold.

"Marriage agreement?""

"Not a prenup.""

She looked at me.

"Something else.""

I unfolded the paper.

The title was simple.

*PARENTAL AUTHORITY TRANSFER AGREEMENT*

I stared.

My vision blurred.

At the bottom were two signatures.

One was blank.

Mine.

The other was already there.

Weston Hale.

I looked up.

"Why would he need this?""

Corinne didn't answer immediately.

Then she said the sentence that changed everything.

"Because once you signed it, he would no longer need to convince you to give him control.""

I stared at the document.

The wedding.

The money.

The pressure.

The locked door.

Everything suddenly connected.

But one question remained.

I looked at Corinne.

"Why are you helping me now?""

Her expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

"Because I finally realized something.""

"What?""

She looked at the document between us.

"Weston wasn't trying to secure his future.""

A pause.

"He was trying to erase yours.""

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Daniel.

Three words.

*CHECK THE SIGNATURE.*

My heart raced.

Because beneath Weston's name on the agreement...

There was another signature.

One I recognized.

One that made my blood turn cold.

*Richard Bennett.*

May you like

My father.

And the date beside it was from the year before he died.
