Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth About the Wedding Day

I agreed to meet Vanessa at a quiet coffee shop near Midtown Atlanta.

Marcus advised me not to go alone, so my cousin Denise came with me.

Denise had known Vanessa almost as long as I had.

She had also been one of the few people who openly challenged Vanessa when she insulted my mother.

When we arrived, Vanessa was already seated near the window.

She wore a gray sweater and no makeup.

Her engagement ring was gone.

She looked up when she saw me.

"Thank you for coming.""

I took the chair opposite her.

Denise remained beside me.

"You have ten minutes," I said.

Vanessa nodded.

"I deserve that.""

She wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Then she said, "I need you to know that I didn't wake up on our wedding day planning to humiliate your mother.""

I looked at her.

"That's supposed to make me feel better?""

"No.""

"Then why are we here?""

She took a breath.

"My father called me that morning.""

"What did he want?""

"He said the investors were becoming nervous. They had heard about the disagreement over the property, and they wanted confirmation that the family was still cooperating.""

I frowned.

"What did that have to do with my mother?""

"Everything.""

She looked down.

"My father told me that if the wedding went smoothly, he would announce the acquisition partnership during the reception.""

I stared at her.

"At our reception?""

She nodded.

"He wanted to introduce the project as a family investment. He planned to tell the investors that you and I would oversee the development together.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"You were going to use my wedding to announce a property deal I never approved?""

"Yes.""

Denise shook her head.

"That's disgusting.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I know.""

I leaned forward.

"Then why did you insult my mother?""

Vanessa stared at her hands.

"My father said she couldn't appear too involved in the project. He wanted her to understand that her role was finished once the paperwork was signed.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"He told me to keep her away from the investors. He said she would make the whole event look like a family gathering instead of a business opportunity.""

I stared at her.

"So you deliberately humiliated her?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't plan the exact words. But I knew I had to make her leave the altar area.""

Denise pushed her chair back.

"You're telling me you insulted an elderly woman because your father didn't want her near some rich investors?""

Vanessa looked miserable.

"Yes.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Why couldn't you simply ask her to step aside?""

"Because my father said any appearance of conflict would raise questions.""

"And insulting her in front of three hundred people wouldn't?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I panicked.""

I sat back.

The woman I had loved had looked at my mother's face and chosen to humiliate her rather than risk disappointing her father.

There was no excuse.

But I wanted to understand one thing.

"Why did you look so frightened when I ended the wedding?""

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"Because my father told me something that morning.""

"What?""

"He said that if you refused to cooperate, he would make sure you were blamed for the failed investment.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"He had already prepared the fake agreement. He planned to show it to the investors after the ceremony and say you had changed your mind at the last minute.""

I stared at her.

"So he wanted me to look like the dishonest one.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because if the investors believed you had backed out after making a commitment, they might sue you or pressure you into signing a settlement.""

Denise shook her head.

"Your father is unbelievable.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"I know.""

I turned back to Vanessa.

"Did you know about the forged signature before the wedding?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know about the one hundred thousand dollars?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know about the recording?""

Her eyes widened.

"What recording?""

I watched her carefully.

"Your mother gave Marcus evidence.""

Vanessa looked shocked.

"She recorded Dad?""

"Yes.""

For a moment, Vanessa seemed unable to breathe.

Then she whispered, "He's going to destroy her.""

"Your mother has finally decided to tell the truth. That's not something you should blame her for.""

Vanessa nodded.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I brought something.""

She placed it on the table.

Inside were several printed emails.

"I saved these because I thought my father might eventually turn against me.""

I examined the first page.

It was an email from Richard to Vanessa.

Make sure Evelyn signs the updated authorization before Saturday. If Charles asks questions, tell him the document is only for valuation purposes.

Another email contained instructions for handling my mother's objections.

If she becomes difficult, remind her that Charles has a new family now. She shouldn't interfere with his future.

I felt my jaw tighten.

Vanessa watched me.

"There's more.""

She turned to another page.

This email had been sent to her two days before the wedding.

The final acquisition agreement must be signed before the investor meeting. Once Charles is legally married to you, he will be more likely to approve the consolidated family transaction.

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"My father wanted me to get you to sign a marital property agreement.""

I stared at her.

"What kind?""

"One that would give me authority to manage certain investments and negotiate on your behalf.""

I felt cold.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because the agreement included the land.""

I looked at Denise.

She shook her head in disbelief.

I turned back to Vanessa.

"You weren't just trying to get me to sell the property. You were trying to get legal authority over it.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

I pushed the envelope away.

"Why?""

"Because my father said it would be easier once we were married.""

I stood.

Denise stood with me.

Vanessa reached for my hand.

"Please, Charles. I know what I did was wrong. But I want to help fix it.""

I looked at her.

"Why now?""

"Because I finally understand what my father was doing.""

"No. You understood before the wedding. You just thought you could get away with it.""

She began crying.

"I loved you.""

I looked at her for a long moment.

"Maybe you loved the life you imagined with me. Maybe you loved the house, the career, the security. But you didn't love the people who made that life possible.""

She lowered her head.

I turned toward the door.

Then she said something that stopped me.

"Charles, there's one more thing.""

I looked back.

"My father isn't just trying to save his company.""

"What do you mean?""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"He's in serious financial trouble. The company has debts we never told anyone about.""

"How much?""

"Over four million dollars.""

Denise frowned.

"Then why would he take on another development project?""

"Because he already promised the investors a return he couldn't deliver.""

I stared at her.

"Was the acquisition supposed to cover his debts?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes. He needed the land to secure the next round of financing. Without it, the company could collapse.""

I understood.

The property wasn't simply an attractive opportunity.

It was a lifeline.

And my family had become the price of keeping Richard Mitchell's business alive.

I left the coffee shop without saying goodbye.

That evening, Marcus called.

"Charles, we have confirmation from Harold Whitmore.""

"What did he say?""

"He wants to meet with you before tomorrow's investor presentation.""

I looked at my calendar.

"Where?""

"At the estate where the wedding was scheduled.""

I almost laughed.

"Of course.""

Marcus continued.

"He's agreed to review the original documents, the recording, and the disputed signatures.""

"Will Richard be there?""

"Yes.""

"Vanessa?""

"Apparently.""

I thought about the last conversation.

"Good.""

Marcus hesitated.

"There's something else. Harold's legal team has uncovered a payment discrepancy.""

"What kind?""

"The thirty-five thousand dollars paid to Vanessa was only the first transfer.""

I sat down.

"How many were there?""

"Three.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much altogether?""

"One hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where did the other money go?""

"We're still tracing it.""

Then Marcus said something that made me sit forward.

"One of the transfers was made to an account registered under Patricia Mitchell's name.""

I frowned.

"Patricia?""

"Yes.""

"She told us she didn't receive any money.""

"I know.""

I thought about the recording.

Patricia had been afraid of Richard.

She had witnessed the forgery.

She had handed over evidence.

But now there was a payment in her name.

"Could Richard have used her account without her permission?""

"It's possible. We need to ask her.""

I called Patricia immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

"Charles?""

"Mrs. Mitchell, did you receive money from the development company?""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much?""

"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"I didn't know it was connected to the property until recently.""

"Where did it go?""

She began crying.

"Richard transferred it into my account and told me to keep it safe. He said it was company money.""

"Did you spend any of it?""

"No.""

"Do you still have it?""

"Yes.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why didn't you tell Marcus?""

"Because I was ashamed.""

I took a breath.

"Mrs. Mitchell, you need to tell him everything.""

"I will.""

Then she said:

"Charles, there's something else I haven't told you.""

I waited.

"Richard asked me to destroy a document last week.""

"What document?""

"The original agreement your mother signed.""

My heart began beating faster.

"Did you destroy it?""

"No.""

"Where is it?""

Patricia lowered her voice.

"At my house. Hidden in the study.""

I looked at the clock.

"Why didn't you give it to Marcus?""

"Because I was waiting for the right moment.""

I closed my eyes.

"Mrs. Mitchell, there is no right moment. My mother deserves the truth.""

Patricia agreed to bring the document to Marcus the following morning.

But before we ended the call, she whispered something else.

"Richard doesn't know I kept it.""

At 11:47 that night, an email arrived from Harold Whitmore's office.

The subject line read:

*Tomorrow's Meeting — Final Review.*

Attached was a revised list of attendees.

Richard Mitchell.

Vanessa Mitchell.

Patricia Mitchell.

Harold Whitmore.

Two company attorneys.

Marcus Reed.

And me.

But there was another name.

*Gregory Shaw — Legal Counsel, Mitchell Land Development.*

The same attorney Patricia had identified in the recording.

The man who allegedly helped prepare my forged signature.

I forwarded the invitation to Marcus.

His reply came almost immediately.

*Marcus:* Don't worry about Gregory. We have enough evidence to ask some serious questions.

I stared at the screen.

Then another email arrived.

This one was from an address I didn't recognize.

There was no attachment.

Just a short message.

Mr. Bennett, before tomorrow's meeting, you should know that the original land agreement is not the only document Richard Mitchell has altered.

I sat completely still.

A second line appeared.

He has also changed the ownership records concerning the property your father left you.

I read it again.

Then I called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

"Charles?""

"Something just came in.""

I read the message.

Marcus went silent.

Finally, he said:

"Do not contact Richard. I'm checking the county records right now.""

I stared at my father's photograph on the kitchen counter.

For twenty-three years, I had believed the land he left me was safely mine.

May you like

Now someone was claiming that even my father's final gift had been tampered with.

And tomorrow, I would finally find out how far Richard Mitchell was willing to go.
