Amused

Chapter 4: The Plan They Never Expected Me to Discover

Vanessa's phone continued ringing.

Her father's name flashed across the screen.

She stared at it, then at me.

"Don't answer that," I said.

She swallowed.

"Charles, you don't understand what's happening.""

"Then explain it.""

She pressed the red button and ended the call.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The bridal suite suddenly felt much smaller. Expensive perfume hung in the air, and the makeup lights reflected against the mirrors surrounding us.

I placed the documents on the dressing table.

"Start talking.""

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"My father saw an opportunity.""

"An opportunity to steal my mother's property?""

"Nobody was stealing anything.""

"Then why did you forge my signature?""

She exhaled sharply.

"My father said it was temporary. He wanted the development company to have preliminary approval so they could negotiate with investors.""

"Using my name?""

"Yes.""

"Without asking me?""

"Because you would have said no!""

Her answer came so quickly that I almost laughed.

At least she wasn't pretending anymore.

I pulled out a chair.

"Tell me about the thirty-five thousand dollars.""

Vanessa looked toward the door.

"That was a consulting payment.""

"For doing what?""

"Helping coordinate the transaction.""

"What transaction?""

"The proposed purchase of the land.""

I leaned forward.

"So you were paid to convince my mother to sell her home?""

"She wasn't being forced!""

"Did she know you were being paid?""

Vanessa looked down.

That silence answered my question.

I stood.

"You took money to manipulate my mother.""

"Charles, I was trying to make something happen for us!""

"Stop saying us.""

Her eyes filled.

"You don't understand how difficult things have been for me. My father has spent years building his company. He wanted to expand, but he needed properties in that area. Your mother's land was perfect.""

"And my father's land?""

She froze.

I watched her carefully.

"Marcus found the request for information about the parcel my father left me. You knew about that too, didn't you?""

Vanessa sat on the edge of the makeup chair.

"Your father's property would have made the project much more valuable.""

"How much more?""

She didn't answer.

"How much, Vanessa?""

"Almost six million dollars.""

I felt something turn over in my stomach.

Six million.

That was the projected value of the combined development, not the amount they intended to pay my family.

I thought about my mother's small farmhouse, the old barn, and the vegetable garden where she spent most of her mornings.

I thought about how many times she had refused to replace her broken refrigerator because she wanted to save money.

And someone had been discussing the future of her home as if it were a line on a spreadsheet.

"Did you tell your father I would agree?""

Vanessa nodded reluctantly.

"I told him we could discuss it after the wedding.""

"Why?""

"Because once we were married, you'd understand that decisions about our future had to be made together.""

I stared at her.

"Marriage doesn't give you ownership of everything I have.""

"I know that.""

"Do you?""

She stood abruptly.

"You're acting like I was planning to take everything from you. I wasn't! We would have made money.

Your mother would have had enough to buy a beautiful retirement home. We could have invested in something better.""

"My mother already has a home.""

"An old farmhouse!""

"Her home.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You and your mother are obsessed with that place.""

I picked up the documents.

"One more question. What was the second payment?""

Her expression changed.

"There's no second payment.""

I took out my phone and showed her the message from her father.

If he asks about the second payment, deny everything.

She stared at the screen.

Then she sat down again.

"That was supposed to be a bonus.""

"How much?""

"One hundred thousand dollars.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"Paid to whom?""

"Me.""

"For what?""

"Getting everything signed.""

I stepped back.

The room seemed to tilt.

"One hundred thousand dollars for convincing my mother to sign a preliminary authorization and helping your father obtain my property?""

Vanessa started crying.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""

"How was it supposed to happen?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"My father said the wedding would make everything easier. Your mother would trust me as her daughter-in-law. You would trust me as your wife. We would have a few months to put everything together.""

I looked at her.

"So the wedding wasn't just a wedding.""

"Of course it was!""

"Then why did your father need everything signed before Saturday?""

She looked away.

I walked toward the door.

"Charles, wait!""

I stopped but didn't turn around.

"Please. Don't leave.""

"Why?""

"Because I love you.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

I wanted to believe her.

But love was supposed to protect people. It wasn't supposed to turn their trust into an opportunity for profit.

"Did you ever love my mother?"" I asked.

Vanessa didn't answer.

I turned around.

"Did you ever even try?""

She looked offended.

"Why does that matter?""

"Because she was going to be your family.""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"Your mother and I were never going to be close. She doesn't fit into the life I want.""

I nodded slowly.

There it was.

The truth without decoration.

I opened the door.

"Don't come to the farm. Don't contact my mother. And don't sign anything using my name.""

She rushed toward me.

"Charles, you're making a huge mistake!""

I looked at her one final time.

"No, Vanessa. I made the mistake two years ago when I confused your ambition with your character.""

I left.

At 7:30 that evening, Marcus called.

"Where are you?""

"Driving home.""

"Don't go home yet. I need you to come back to my office.""

"What happened?""

"The development company just submitted a revised acquisition proposal.""

I pulled into a parking lot.

"How?""

"Apparently, they believe they have enough preliminary authorization to proceed with the next stage.""

"But my mother hasn't agreed to sell.""

"I know. There's another issue.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"What now?""

"The proposal includes an additional parcel. Your father's land.""

"Who authorized that?""

"Your fiancée's father claims you agreed verbally.""

I let out a bitter laugh.

"He's lying.""

"I assumed as much. But there's something you need to see.""

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting across from Marcus again.

He turned his laptop toward me.

A video call recording had been obtained from an investor presentation. Marcus had received it through a contact who had concerns about the proposed transaction.

The recording showed Vanessa's father, Richard Mitchell, standing in front of a large screen.

Behind him was an aerial photograph of my mother's farm and the adjoining property.

A red outline surrounded both parcels.

Richard pointed at the image.

"The family relationship is the key to this acquisition," he explained.

"Our representative has direct access to the owners. We anticipate no significant resistance once the marriage is completed.""

A man in a gray suit asked a question.

"What if the son refuses?""

Richard smiled.

"Then we'll remind him that his wife is already involved in the arrangement. He'll have a financial incentive to cooperate.""

I stared at the screen.

The recording continued.

Richard changed the slide.

A projected development plan appeared.

Rows of luxury townhouses. A private clubhouse. A commercial center.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Once the properties are consolidated, we can begin clearing the existing structures immediately.""

My mother's house.

The barn.

The garden.

Everything.

A woman in the meeting asked, "And the older woman?""

Richard shrugged.

"She'll be compensated. We aren't in the business of preserving sentimental attachments.""

I closed the laptop.

Marcus watched me.

"There's enough here to justify a formal investigation into the transaction.""

I nodded.

"Do whatever you need to do.""

Then my phone rang.

It was my mother.

"Charles?""

Her voice sounded different.

"What happened, Mama?""

"I think somebody came by the farm.""

I stood.

"Who?""

"I don't know. There was a black SUV near the barn. A man got out and asked whether I was ready for the property inspection.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did you let him in?""

"No.""

"Good. Stay inside.""

She hesitated.

"Baby, he had papers with your name on them.""

I looked at Marcus.

"What papers?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"He said your wedding was tomorrow, and he needed me to cooperate before the new family agreement became official.""

I closed my eyes.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Charles, he said Vanessa was already my legal daughter-in-law.""
