Chapter 7: The Truth Comes Out

The recording came from Lauren.

Nia’s sister.

The same person who had spent years defending her.

When I called her the next morning, she answered immediately.

“I knew you would listen.””

I stood by my kitchen window.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Silence.

Then:

“Long enough.””

My stomach sank.

“Lauren.””

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Yes.””

She didn’t argue.

“I was scared.””

“Of Daniel?””

“Yes.””

That caught me off guard.

“Why?””

“Because he knows how to make people doubt themselves.””

She explained everything.

Daniel had slowly inserted himself into Nia’s life.

Not aggressively.

Not obviously.

That was what made him dangerous.

He became the person who always agreed.

The person who always supported.

The person who whispered the things someone wanted to hear when they were hurting.

“He kept telling Nia she was the only parent who truly cared,” Lauren said.

I closed my eyes.

“And she believed him.””

“She wanted to.””

That was the hardest part.

Because manipulation rarely works on someone who is completely unwilling.

It works by feeding the pain that already exists.

Later that afternoon, Nia called.

“I need to talk.””

Her voice sounded different.

Smaller.

“What happened?””

“Daniel knows.””

I stood up.

“Knows what?””

“That I have the recordings.””

My heart raced.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Are the kids there?””

“No.””

I grabbed my keys.

“Stay there.””

When I arrived, Nia was sitting on the couch.

The house felt different.

The same house where I had picked up my children hundreds of times.

But now it felt like a place where secrets had been hiding in the walls.

“He called me,” she said.

“What did he say?””

She looked at me.

“He said I was ruining everything.””

I frowned.

“You?””

“He said if I told the truth, everyone would blame me.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

She looked down.

“And he was right.””

The honesty shocked me.

“He made me believe I was protecting the kids.””

I sat across from her.

“You weren’t.””

“I know.””

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t respond immediately.

Because I had imagined this moment many times.

I imagined anger.

I imagined revenge.

I imagined finally hearing those words.

But now that they came, they didn’t fix everything.

They couldn’t erase months of damage.

“I need you to understand something,” I said.

She nodded.

“I can forgive you someday.””

Her eyes lifted.

“But the kids need honesty now.””

She wiped her tears.

“I know.””

The next morning, we met with Rachel.

All three of us.

Me.

Nia.

And the truth.

Rachel listened as Nia explained Daniel’s involvement.

Then she said:

“This is important, but we need to move carefully.””

Nia nodded.

“I understand.””

“You need to stop all communication with Daniel.””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“I will.””

“Not because Mark asked.””

Rachel looked at her.

“Because your children need protection from this.””

That afternoon, Nia sent Daniel a message.

A simple one.

“I know what you did.””

He called within seconds.

She put him on speaker.

I sat silently.

“Nia, don’t do this.””

Her voice was steady.

“No.””

A pause.

“What?””

“You lied to me.””

“I was trying to help you.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You were trying to destroy him.””

Daniel became quiet.

Then his tone changed.

Cold.

“You think Mark cares about you?””

I felt anger rise.

But Nia spoke first.

“Don’t talk about him.””

A long pause.

Then Daniel laughed.

“You really believe that now?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“Yes.””

Then Daniel said something that made both of us freeze.

“Fine.””

His voice became calm.

“If you want the truth, I’ll give you the truth.””

Another pause.

“I didn’t start this because of you, Nia.””

The room went silent.

“Then why?””

Daniel answered:

“Because Mark took something from me years ago.””

I looked at Nia.

She looked just as confused.

“What?”” she asked.

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You really don’t remember.””

Then the call ended.

And for the first time, we realized something terrifying.

Daniel’s obsession had started long before our divorce.

Long before the lies.

Long before the custody battle.

May you like

He had been waiting.

For years.
