Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Lie
I arrived at Rachel’s office before she opened the door.
I barely slept.
The entire drive there, my mind raced.
If it wasn’t Nia, then who?
Who had convinced my ex-wife to destroy my relationship with my children?
Rachel was already inside.
She had a folder on her desk.
“Sit down.””
I did.
She opened the folder.
Inside were screenshots.
Emails.
Notes.
I recognized some of the names.
Then I saw one that made my stomach drop.
Daniel.
Rachel looked at me.
“You remember him?””
“Yes.””
“He has been advising Nia.””
“Advising?””
Rachel nodded.
“He suggested she document your supposed failures as a father.””
I stared at the papers.
“Why?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I looked at one screenshot.
Daniel had written:
“Make sure the kids understand who chose to leave.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He’s poisoning them.””
Rachel didn’t disagree.
But she didn’t react emotionally either.
“We need proof that connects this to custody interference.””
I looked up.
“What about the kids?””
Her expression softened.
“That’s the part that matters most.””
Later that day, I met with Nia.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed to.
We sat across from each other in a quiet park.
The same park where we used to bring the kids when they were younger.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I said:
“Why?””
Nia looked away.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“Yes, you do.””
She stayed silent.
“Why did you tell them I didn’t want them?””
Her eyes filled.
“You weren’t there.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You left me.””
There it was.
The wound beneath everything.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Nia, I left the marriage.””
“You left.””
“But not them.””
She shook her head.
“You think there’s a difference.””
“There is.””
Her voice cracked.
“Not to children.””
I stared at her.
Because for the first time, I saw something clearly.
Nia wasn’t only trying to hurt me.
She was trying to rewrite the past because she couldn’t accept it.
But understanding someone’s pain didn’t excuse what they did.
Especially when children were caught in the middle.
“I never stopped showing up.””
She wiped her eyes.
“You don’t know what it felt like.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“I don’t.””
Then I leaned forward.
“But I know what it feels like for Eli to think his father doesn’t love him.””
That broke through.
Her face changed.
For a second, she looked like the woman I married.
The woman who loved our kids more than anything.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
And immediately stood.
I saw the screen.
One name.
Daniel.
She answered.
“Not now.””
A pause.
Then her face turned pale.
“What do you mean you told him?””
My heart stopped.
I watched her expression shift from anger to fear.
“Daniel, you promised me.””
She ended the call quickly.
But it was too late.
I had heard enough.
“You promised you what?””
Nia didn’t answer.
“Nia.””
She looked at me.
And for the first time in months, she looked afraid of the truth.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
My voice lowered.
“How far?””
She looked down.
Then whispered:
“Daniel wasn’t helping me get custody.””
I waited.
“He was helping himself.””
The wind moved through the trees.
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
And then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“He never cared about me.””
A pause.
“He wanted access to our family.””
My blood ran cold.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t just a story about a bitter divorce.
It wasn’t just about lies.
It wasn’t even about custody.
Someone had been manipulating my children for a reason neither of us understood.
May you like
And when Nia finally looked me in the eyes, she whispered:
“Mark… Daniel has been planning this since before we separated.””
