Amused

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew

I didn’t sleep that night.

I stared at the picture over and over.

It wasn’t a photo of Nia.

It wasn’t a photo of the kids.

It was a screenshot of a message.

A message from Nia to someone named Lauren.

My first thought was that it was fake.

My second thought was that I already knew who Lauren was.

Nia’s older sister.

The person who had spent years telling me I was “too emotional” whenever I tried to talk about problems in our marriage.

The message was simple.

“She needs to believe Mark left because of us. Otherwise she’ll never accept the divorce.””

I read it again.

And again.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

She wasn’t just hurting me.

She was creating a story.

A story where she was abandoned.

A story where my children were casualties.

A story where I was the villain.

The next day, I met Lauren at a coffee shop.

She looked uncomfortable the second she sat down.

“Why did you send me that?””

She wrapped both hands around her cup.

“Because I saw what was happening.””

“What was happening?””

She looked down.

“Nia has been telling people different versions of the divorce.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“What versions?””

Lauren hesitated.

“She says you chose your freedom over your family.””

I felt my face go cold.

“That’s not what happened.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Because we believed her.””

That hurt.

More than I expected.

Not because strangers believed her.

Because people who knew me did.

“She told everyone I walked out.””

Lauren looked away.

“Didn’t you?””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“I left after months of trying to fix things. After finding messages between her and another man.””

Lauren froze.

“What?””

There it was.

The reaction I had expected years ago.

Shock.

Confusion.

Not judgment.

“You didn’t know?””

She shook her head slowly.

“Nia said you were unhappy and looking for an excuse.””

I looked out the window.

The entire story of my divorce had been rewritten.

And I hadn’t even known there was a different version.

“Who was the man?””

Lauren didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence told me there was more.

“I need you to tell me everything.””

She took a deep breath.

“His name is Daniel.””

The name hit me like a punch.

Daniel.

The same man who had suddenly become “just a friend” during the final months of our marriage.

The same man Nia told me I was paranoid for questioning.

I stood up.

“I need to go.””

“Mark.””

I stopped.

“She loves the kids.””

I looked back at her.

“I know.””

“And I think she believes what she’s saying.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because maybe that was the scariest possibility.

Maybe Nia wasn’t just lying to everyone else.

Maybe she had convinced herself.

That night, I sat across from Ava and Eli during dinner.

I watched them laugh.

I watched them argue about who got the last piece of garlic bread.

Normal moments.

Precious moments.

Then Eli asked:

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“When you leave again, can you tell us first?””

My fork hit the plate.

“What?””

He looked scared.

“Mom says people leave when they stop loving you.””

I closed my eyes.

I had to fight every instinct screaming inside me.

I wanted to call Nia.

I wanted to confront her.

I wanted answers.

But I looked at my son.

And I realized something.

This wasn’t a battle about proving I was right.

It was about protecting two children from carrying a burden they never asked for.

After the kids went to bed, I opened my laptop.

I started documenting everything.

Dates.

Messages.

Comments.

Every strange thing I had ignored.

Then I found something.

An email.

One I had missed months ago.

The subject line was:

“Regarding custody concerns.””

The sender was not Nia.

It was someone else.

Someone who had already contacted a lawyer.

Someone who knew exactly what she had been planning.

And when I opened the attachment, I saw a name.

A name I never expected.
