Amused

Chapter 8: The Girl Who Was Taken Before Dawn

Daniel Mercer sounded like a man who had spent nine years rehearsing the same confession.

His voice was steady.

But every few words, he stopped to breathe.

"Where are you?"" I asked.

"At a motel outside Dayton.""

"Why are you hiding?""

"Because Raymond knows I have the original records.""

I looked at Officer Bennett.

He immediately gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

"Daniel, listen carefully. The police are with me.""

Daniel went silent.

Then he said, "Good. I think it's time someone heard the truth.""

Officer Bennett introduced himself and asked Daniel to verify his identity.

After several questions, he turned to me.

"Let him talk.""

I returned my attention to the phone.

"What happened the night Maya was born?""

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Denise delivered a baby girl at 10:42 p.m. Rachel Bennett delivered another girl at 11:18 p.m. Both babies were healthy initially.""

"And the switch?""

"It happened after midnight.""

"How do you know?""

"Because I was there.""

I stared at the phone.

"You were at the hospital?""

"Yes. Denise had called me earlier that evening.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She wanted me to come.""

"Why would Denise call you?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because I was the father of her first child.""

I looked at the adoption records.

"Your son Noah.""

"Yes.""

"Then why were you there nine years later?""

"Because Denise wanted to tell me something.""

"What?""

"She was pregnant again. She said the father was Raymond.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did Raymond know?""

"Yes. He knew from the beginning.""

I looked at Officer Bennett.

He was taking notes.

Daniel continued.

"Denise said Raymond had promised to help her. He wanted to be part of the baby's life, but he didn't want you to know.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"Because he was afraid you'd leave her. He also knew that you had a good job, a stable home, and could provide the life he couldn't.""

I shook my head.

"So he let me believe I was the father.""

"Yes.""

"Did you know about the affair?""

"I found out later.""

I felt anger rising.

"Then tell me about the babies.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Raymond's mother, Margaret, worked in the maternity ward. She had access to the newborn nursery.""

"Was she involved?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"She arranged for the identification bracelets to be changed.""

I stared at the floor.

"Why?""

"Because Raymond wanted to keep his biological daughter out of the inheritance system.""

I frowned.

"His biological daughter?""

"Raymond's actual child with Denise. Maya.""

The words echoed in my head.

"Why would he want to hide her?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Because Maya wasn't the child he wanted to use.""

I closed my eyes.

"What does that mean?""

"Raymond had already learned about Rachel Bennett's family trust. He knew Rachel's baby would eventually inherit a fortune.""

I looked at Officer Bennett.

He nodded slowly.

Daniel continued.

"Rachel died years later, but her daughter remained the beneficiary. Raymond discovered that the child was growing up under another family's name.""

"Meaning Maya?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the photograph of the two babies.

"Then what happened to Denise's biological daughter?""

Daniel was silent for a long time.

Finally, he said, "She was taken out of the hospital.""

My stomach dropped.

"By whom?""

"Margaret Cole.""

"Where did she go?""

"To a woman named Patricia.""

"Who is Patricia?""

"Margaret's sister.""

I felt cold.

"Was the child adopted?""

"Not legally.""

"What?""

"Patricia raised her privately. The records were changed afterward.""

Officer Bennett leaned closer.

"Do you know where this woman lives?""

Daniel gave an address.

Officer Bennett immediately passed it to another officer.

I looked at the photograph of Maya.

"Then who did Denise bring home?""

Daniel's voice became softer.

"Rachel Bennett's daughter.""

I couldn't breathe.

For nine years, I'd believed Maya was the child Denise had delivered.

But according to Daniel, she was the biological daughter of a woman named Rachel Bennett.

And Denise's biological child had been taken somewhere else.

"Does Maya know?""

"No.""

"Does Denise know?""

"Yes.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"How long has she known?""

"She found out when Maya was three.""

I stared into the darkness.

Three.

Six years ago.

Six years of knowing.

Six years of letting me believe.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because Raymond threatened her.""

"With what?""

"He said if she exposed the switch, he'd make sure she never saw either child again.""

I rubbed my face.

"Both children?""

"Yes. Maya and the girl he took.""

I looked at Officer Bennett.

"There's another child.""

He nodded.

"Keep him talking.""

I returned to the phone.

"Daniel, why did Raymond want to separate the two girls?""

"Because one had a legitimate claim to Rachel's family trust. The other was his biological daughter. He believed he could use both identities to manipulate the inheritance process.""

I stared at the documents.

"How?""

"He planned to present Maya as the biological heir to Rachel's estate while claiming his own daughter had been improperly removed from the family. He wanted both children under his control.""

I felt sick.

"Why would that help him?""

"Because he believed he could challenge the trust through a complicated chain of inheritance claims. If he controlled the children's legal representation, he could influence the distribution.""

Officer Bennett interrupted.

"Daniel, do you have physical evidence?""

"Yes. Original hospital records. Photographs. A letter from Margaret.""

"Can you provide those to us?""

"I can.""

"Where are they?""

Daniel gave another address.

Officer Bennett wrote it down.

Then Daniel said something that made my heart stop.

"There's one more thing you need to understand.""

I closed my eyes.

"What?""

"Raymond didn't just arrange the switch. He chose which baby Marcus would take home.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"Why me?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Because Raymond knew you would love the child unconditionally. He wanted someone respectable to raise her while he waited for the inheritance.""

I stared at the phone.

"So I was chosen?""

"Yes.""

"To raise another man's daughter?""

"To raise the daughter who could eventually make him rich.""

I couldn't speak.

For nine years, I'd worked overtime, attended school meetings, paid for piano lessons, and stayed awake when Maya had fevers.

I'd done all of it because I loved her.

Not because of an inheritance.

Not because of a family name.

Because she was my little girl.

And someone had calculated that love into a financial plan.

I looked at Officer Bennett.

"Find the children.""

He nodded.

Then Daniel spoke again.

"Marcus, I need to tell you something about Noah.""

"What?""

"Raymond didn't take him to help find Maya.""

I frowned.

"Then why?""

"Because Noah has something that proves the original switch.""

I looked at the adoption records.

"What?""

"A bracelet.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What bracelet?""

"The original hospital identification bracelet from the night the girls were born. Noah found it among Margaret's belongings after she died.""

I stared at the documents.

"Where is it now?""

"Raymond has it.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why would Noah give it to him?""

"He didn't. Raymond took it.""

I looked toward Officer Bennett.

"That bracelet is evidence.""

The officer nodded.

"We'll need to recover it.""

Daniel continued.

"There's a reason Raymond wants you to bring the documents tomorrow. He plans to destroy the original records and replace them with his own version.""

"Where?""

"An old storage facility near Hawthorne.""

Officer Bennett immediately looked at his colleague.

"Hawthorne again.""

Daniel gave the location.

The officer passed it to the team.

Then Daniel said, "But you need to understand something else. Raymond isn't working alone.""

I froze.

"Who else?""

"Denise.""

I closed my eyes.

"She's involved?""

"She knew about the switch. She helped him keep it hidden.""

I thought about the recordings.

The threats.

The financial documents.

The way Denise had reacted when Maya mentioned Raymond.

I had wanted to believe she was simply being manipulated.

But the truth was becoming harder to ignore.

"Why would she help him?""

"Because Raymond promised her something.""

"What?""

"Her first daughter.""

I stared at the phone.

Daniel explained.

"He told Denise that if she helped him secure the trust, he'd return the child he took thirteen years ago.""

I looked toward the floor.

"So she traded Maya's safety for the promise of getting Noah's sister back?""

"Yes.""

I felt something break inside me.

"Does she know where the girl is now?""

"She does.""

"Where?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said, "She's closer than you think.""

Before I could ask what he meant, the police radio crackled.

Officer Bennett listened.

His expression changed.

He turned toward me.

"We have a possible location for Maya.""

I stepped forward.

"Where?""

"An abandoned storage building on Hawthorne Road.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"Let's go.""

"Mr. Hayes, you are not going inside.""

"That's my daughter.""

"We have a tactical team on the way.""

I forced myself to stop.

Officer Bennett was right.

I couldn't help Maya by charging into a dangerous building.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Raymond.

*Bring the documents. Ten minutes. Or the children move again.*

Then another.

A photograph.

Maya and Noah were sitting together on the floor.

Their hands were tied loosely in front of them.

Maya's face was wet with tears.

I felt my vision blur.

"Move!"" I shouted.

The police vehicles pulled out.

We drove toward Hawthorne Road.

The storage building appeared at the end of an empty industrial lane.

One light was on inside.

The tactical officers approached from both sides.

I waited behind a police vehicle.

My hands were shaking.

Then a loudspeaker sounded.

"Police! Come out with your hands visible!""

Silence.

Then a metal door slammed.

Officers rushed inside.

I heard shouting.

Footsteps.

A crash.

Then a voice.

"Clear!""

Another officer emerged.

"Two children located.""

I ran forward.

Maya appeared in the doorway.

"Daddy!""

I dropped to my knees.

She ran into my arms.

I held her so tightly that she squeaked.

"I'm here, baby. I'm here.""

She buried her face against my neck.

"I'm sorry.""

"Don't apologize.""

"I wanted to help Noah.""

"I know.""

A paramedic checked her hands.

She was frightened but unharmed.

Noah stood a few feet away.

He looked exhausted.

I approached him.

"Are you okay?""

He nodded.

Then he looked at Maya.

"She's brave.""

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"What's your name again?""

"Noah.""

I nodded.

"I'm Marcus.""

He looked at me.

"I know.""

His eyes filled.

Then he said something that stopped me.

"Mr. Hayes, there's something you should know.""

I waited.

"Noah swallowed.

"Raymond told me that if I didn't help him, he'd send my little sister away again.""

I felt cold.

"Your little sister?""

He nodded.

"The girl he took from the hospital.""

I stared at him.

"Do you know where she is?""

Noah looked toward the building.

Then he pointed at a small office near the back.

"She was there yesterday.""

My heart began pounding.

"Was?""

Noah lowered his eyes.

"Raymond moved her this morning.""

I turned toward Officer Bennett.

"Find her!""

The officer immediately called it in.

Then Noah reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small hospital bracelet.

It was yellowed with age.

The printed name was almost faded.

But one thing remained visible.

A date.

September 14.

And beneath it, a name.

*Baby Girl Hayes.*

I stared at the bracelet.

My hands began shaking.

Noah looked at Maya.

Then at me.

"She's your daughter too, Mr. Hayes.""

I couldn't breathe.

Maya was Rachel Bennett's biological child.

But the baby Denise had delivered that night was somewhere else.

And according to the bracelet, that baby had been registered under my surname.

Before I could ask another question, Noah whispered:

"Raymond told me the girl has been living with a woman who calls herself her grandmother.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Noah swallowed.

Then he said:

"Margaret Cole.""

I froze.

"Margaret is dead.""

Noah shook his head.

"Not the woman I mean.""

He pointed toward the road.

"Her name is Patricia. But she tells the girl she's Margaret.""

May you like

And suddenly, I understood why Raymond had been so desperate to find the original records.

The woman raising my biological daughter had been impersonating someone who was supposed to be dead.
