Chapter 6: The Boy Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I ran through the hospital corridor with my phone pressed to my ear.
Lauren was still crying.
"Marcus, the police are here. They're asking questions.""
"Tell them everything. The recordings. The note.
The photograph. All of it.""
"Should I tell them about Raymond?""
"Yes.""
"Do you think he took her?""
I couldn't answer.
I pushed through the hospital doors and ran toward my car.
Then I heard Elliot's voice behind me.
"Marcus! Wait!""
I turned.
He was standing in the doorway of his room, one hand gripping his walking frame.
"You can't go alone.""
"Stay here.""
"Raymond has been planning this for months.""
"My daughter is missing!""
"I know.""
His voice cracked.
"She's my granddaughter too.""
I stopped.
For the first time, Elliot wasn't speaking like a wealthy man protecting his inheritance.
He sounded like an old man terrified of losing another child.
I walked back toward him.
"Tell me why he needs her before tomorrow.""
Elliot swallowed.
"Because tomorrow is the final hearing for the trust amendment.""
"What hearing?""
"A private legal proceeding. Raymond filed an application claiming that he has authority to represent the interests of two minor beneficiaries.""
"Maya and Noah.""
"Yes.""
I stared at him.
"How can he represent children he isn't legally responsible for?""
"That's what I tried to stop. He submitted documents claiming that both biological mothers authorized him to act on their behalf.""
I felt sick.
"Denise signed something?""
Elliot nodded.
"She was told it was a consent form allowing Raymond to arrange a family meeting.""
I closed my eyes.
My wife had signed another document without understanding what it meant.
Or perhaps she understood more than she admitted.
"Why does Maya need to be there?""
"Because Raymond wants to present her as proof that the family has accepted him.""
I frowned.
"Accepted him as what?""
"As the person responsible for managing the children's interests.""
I stared at him.
"That's insane.""
"He's convinced the judge that he's protecting the children from unstable family circumstances.""
I thought about the forged signature, the recordings, and the threats.
"He's using me as the unstable parent.""
Elliot nodded.
"And Denise as the cooperating mother.""
I looked at him.
"Then we stop him.""
"There's one more thing.""
I exhaled sharply.
"What now?""
Elliot reached for my arm.
"Raymond has a document claiming that Maya is already under his temporary guardianship.""
I stared at him.
"That's impossible.""
"I know.""
"Who approved it?""
"I don't know. That's why you need to contact your attorney immediately.""
I called Daniel Brooks.
He answered on the first ring.
"Marcus?""
"Maya is missing. Raymond may have taken her.""
Daniel's voice became sharp.
"Where are you?""
"Riverside Medical Center.""
"Are the police involved?""
"Yes. My sister called them.""
"Good. Do not approach Raymond. I am contacting an emergency family-law attorney and the authorities. Send me every document you have.""
I glanced at Elliot.
"There's a trust hearing tomorrow. Raymond has submitted guardianship paperwork.""
Daniel went silent.
"Marcus, listen carefully. Do not let anyone convince you that a private trust document can simply transfer custody of your daughter. We need to verify exactly what has been filed.""
"I understand.""
"Are you with Elliot Cole?""
I looked at the old man.
"Yes.""
Daniel sighed.
"Then tell him I need copies of the trust records immediately.""
I ended the call.
Elliot gave me a weak nod.
"Everything is in the envelope.""
I took it.
Then I drove to Lauren's house.
The police were parked outside.
Two officers stood beside the front door.
Lauren ran toward me as soon as I stepped out.
"Marcus!""
I grabbed her shoulders.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
She was shaking.
"I put Maya in the guest room. She wanted to listen to music, so I left her tablet on the bed.""
"How long were you gone?""
"Maybe three minutes.""
"Was the window locked?""
"Yes.""
"Did you hear anything?""
She shook her head.
Then she handed me a small object.
Maya's lavender hair tie.
I recognized it immediately.
"Where did you find this?""
"On the driveway.""
I looked at the house.
The guest-room window was open.
One of the officers approached.
"Mr. Hayes?""
"Yes.""
"I'm Officer Bennett. We need you to walk us through what happened.""
I explained everything.
The recordings.
The loan.
The photographs.
The messages from Elliot.
The officer wrote carefully.
When I mentioned Raymond, his expression changed.
"Do you have a photograph of this person?""
I took out my phone.
I showed him the photograph Maya had found.
He studied it.
"Do you know his vehicle?""
"Black SUV.""
"License plate?""
"No.""
Officer Bennett turned toward his colleague.
"Let's get the neighborhood cameras checked. We need the vehicle description and any recent sightings.""
I looked at Lauren.
"Did Maya leave anything?""
She nodded.
"There was something on her pillow.""
She led me inside.
A small folded piece of paper sat on the bed.
I opened it.
*Daddy, I'm sorry. He said he knows where Noah is. I think I can help him find him. Please don't be mad at me.*
I read it again.
My daughter had gone willingly.
Not because she wanted to leave me.
Because someone had convinced her that another child needed saving.
I pressed the paper against my chest.
"She's trying to help someone.""
Lauren covered her mouth.
"She's nine years old.""
I nodded.
"And Raymond knows exactly how to use that.""
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
"Maya?""
A small voice whispered, "Daddy?""
My entire body went cold.
"Baby! Where are you?""
"I don't know.""
"Are you hurt?""
"No.""
"Are you alone?""
There was a pause.
Then a man's voice.
"Good evening, Marcus.""
Raymond.
I gripped the phone.
"If you touch my daughter—"
"Relax. She's perfectly fine.""
"Put her on.""
"She's safe.""
"Put her on the phone!""
I heard movement.
Then Maya whispered, "Daddy?""
"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm coming to get you.""
Raymond interrupted.
"Not so fast.""
I closed my eyes.
"What do you want?""
"The documents.""
"What documents?""
"The originals from Elliot. The trust records. The adoption papers. Everything.""
I looked at the envelope in my hand.
"Why?""
"Because your family has something that belongs to mine.""
"You're not her father.""
Raymond laughed.
"Biologically, I am.""
"That doesn't give you the right to take her.""
"You're still thinking like a husband, Marcus. This is bigger than your marriage.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Where is she?""
"At a safe location.""
"Give me an address.""
"Bring the documents tomorrow morning.""
"And Maya?""
"She'll be returned.""
I swallowed.
"How do I know you're telling the truth?""
Raymond paused.
Then he said, "Ask your wife what happened to Noah.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Ask her why she agreed to give him away.""
I stared at the floor.
"She was twenty-one. She couldn't afford to raise him.""
Raymond laughed.
"That's the story she told you?""
I didn't answer.
"Ask her why the adoption was arranged through Elliot's wife. Ask her why the original records were changed. And ask her what happened to the money.""
The call ended.
I immediately called Denise.
She answered in a whisper.
"Marcus?""
"Where is Maya?""
"I don't know.""
"Raymond has her.""
She started crying.
"Oh, God.""
"What did he mean about Noah's adoption?""
Silence.
"Denise.""
"I told you I gave him up.""
"Did you receive money?""
Her breathing changed.
Then she whispered, "Yes.""
My stomach dropped.
"How much?""
"I don't remember.""
"How much?""
"Fifteen thousand dollars.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who paid you?""
"Raymond.""
I stared at the wall.
"Raymond paid you to give up your first child?""
"No! That's not what happened!""
"Then explain.""
She was crying so hard I could barely understand her.
"He said the money was for medical expenses. Elliot's wife arranged everything. I didn't know what I was signing.""
"Did you know Raymond was involved?""
"Not at first.""
"When did you find out?""
"Years later.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why didn't you report it?""
"Because Raymond threatened me.""
"With what?""
"He said he'd tell everyone I sold my baby.""
I couldn't speak.
For years, Denise had carried a secret that someone else could use against her.
Raymond had turned her shame into a weapon.
But that still didn't explain why Maya had disappeared.
"Denise, listen carefully. If Raymond calls you, you tell the police immediately.""
"Marcus, please bring Maya home.""
"I will.""
I ended the call.
Officer Bennett approached.
"Mr. Hayes, we've identified a vehicle matching your description.""
I looked up.
"Where?""
"A traffic camera picked up a black SUV near an industrial area on the east side. The plate is partially visible.""
"Can you track it?""
"We're working on it.""
He glanced at my phone.
"Did you receive any calls?""
"Yes. Raymond.""
The officer's expression hardened.
"Did he make demands?""
"He wants documents from Elliot.""
"Do not agree to meet him.""
I nodded.
Then Lauren's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
"It's Denise.""
She answered and put it on speaker.
"Denise?""
My wife sounded terrified.
"Lauren, I need Marcus.""
"I'm here," I said.
"Marcus, I found something.""
"What?""
"I went into the office. Raymond left a folder behind.""
"What folder?""
"The one with the adoption documents.""
I closed my eyes.
"Denise, the police are here. Don't touch anything else.""
"But there's a photograph.""
"What photograph?""
She began crying.
"A photograph of Noah.""
I looked at Lauren.
"Send it to me.""
A moment later, the image arrived.
It showed a teenage boy standing beside a woman outside a small brick house.
I recognized the boy.
It was the same person from Elliot's envelope.
But there was something else.
A man stood in the background.
Partly hidden behind a tree.
I enlarged the image.
My blood ran cold.
The man was Raymond.
And he was holding a newspaper.
The photograph had been taken recently.
Very recently.
I looked at the date printed on the newspaper.
It was from yesterday.
"Where did you find this?"" I asked Denise.
"Inside Raymond's folder.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Did he write anything on it?""
"Yes.""
"What?""
She took a shaky breath.
Then read the words aloud.
"One down. One to go.""
I felt my stomach drop.
One down.
Noah.
One to go.
Maya.
I looked at Officer Bennett.
"He's been watching Noah's adoptive family.""
The officer took the photograph.
"Where was this taken?""
"I don't know.""
I looked closer.
There was a street sign in the background.
I could barely read it.
But one word was visible.
*Hawthorne.*
Officer Bennett immediately called his colleague.
"Check Hawthorne addresses in the traffic-camera area. We may have a second location.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph.
Maya was sitting on a couch.
Her lavender shirt was visible.
She was holding a piece of paper.
Her eyes were red from crying.
Below the picture was a message.
*Your daughter wants to meet her brother. Come alone.*
Then another message arrived.
*And bring the man who raised her.*
I stared at the screen.
For the first time, I understood Raymond's real plan.
He didn't just want the documents.
He wanted me to meet Noah.
He wanted the two children together.
And he wanted me to see something that would make it impossible to walk away.
A final message appeared.
*Ask Noah what happened the night Maya was born.*
I looked up at Officer Bennett.
"There's something about Maya's birth that we don't know.""
He studied my face.
"What do you mean?""
I looked at the photograph again.
Then at the old adoption records.
And suddenly, a horrifying possibility entered my mind.
What if Raymond hadn't simply returned to claim his daughter?
What if he'd known something about her birth that Denise had hidden from everyone?
Something that could explain why he'd waited nine years to come back.
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Elliot.
I answered.
His voice was barely audible.
"Marcus, I found the original hospital records.""
I stepped away from everyone.
"What records?""
"The night Maya was born.""
My heart started pounding.
"What's in them?""
Elliot took a shaky breath.
Then he said:
"Marcus, there were two babies born that night. And according to the original records, one of them was never supposed to leave the hospital with Denise.""
I froze.
"Whose baby did I bring home?""
May you like
Elliot began crying.
"I think that's exactly what Raymond wants you to discover.""
