Chapter 8: My Father’s Warning
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
My father’s handwriting.
My father’s words.
A warning.
About Claire.
I looked at my wife.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not shocked.
Terrified.
“You knew.””
Claire’s lips parted.
“Mark…”
“You knew my father wrote this.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your father found out.””
“Found out what?””
“Who Claire really was.””
I looked at him.
“Stop speaking in riddles.””
Daniel nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
I held up the photograph.
“My father knew Claire before I met her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Tell him.””
Claire looked away.
“I met your father when I was investigating my own family.””
“You investigated my father too?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“At first, I thought he was involved.””
“And?””
“And I was wrong.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did he warn me?””
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Because he knew what I was doing.””
“What were you doing?””
She looked at the floor.
“Getting close to you.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Even after everything.
Even after all the secrets.
They still hurt.
“So he figured it out.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before our wedding.””
I felt sick.
“You knew he knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She had no answer.
Again.
That was becoming the pattern of my marriage.
Questions.
Silence.
Pain.
I walked outside.
I needed air.
I needed a moment where I wasn’t surrounded by people who had lied to me.
The night was cold.
The kind of cold that makes everything feel sharper.
Daniel followed.
I turned.
“I don’t trust you either.””
“I know.””
“You lied too.””
“Yes.””
“Then why should I listen to you?””
He looked exhausted.
“Because unlike Claire, I don’t want anything from you.””
I laughed.
“You contacted my daughter.””
“Because I knew Claire was hiding the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The original file.””
I looked at him.
“What original file?””
“The one Emily found.””
“Where is it?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because someone else does.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the house.
“Claire’s father’s old partner.””
I frowned.
“He’s alive?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Mark, your father didn’t just discover the evidence.””
He looked at me.
“He took it.””
My heart pounded.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I thought about my father.
The secrets.
The locked drawer.
The strange phone calls near the end of his life.
I had always believed he was hiding something.
I just never imagined this.
I went back inside.
Claire was sitting at the kitchen table.
She looked broken.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive.
Not yet.
“Tell me about my father.””
She looked up.
“He saved me.””
The answer surprised me.
“What?””
“When I discovered what my family was involved in, I wanted to expose them.””
She swallowed.
“But I was scared.””
“And my father?””
“He helped me.””
“Then why would he warn me?””
“Because later…”
She stopped.
“Later what?””
Claire looked at the photograph.
“He realized I wasn’t telling him everything.””
I stared at her.
“What weren’t you telling him?””
She looked toward Maya’s room.
Then whispered:
“The truth about Daniel.””
Daniel stiffened.
“What?””
Claire looked at him.
“You weren’t the victim you think you were.””
The room changed.
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
“You think my father ruined everything.””
“Because he did.””
“No.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“You were part of it.””
Daniel stepped back.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Daniel wasn’t just my fiancé.””
Silence.
“He was my father’s employee.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
“He helped him move money.””
“No.””
“He knew what my father was doing.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Mark, she’s manipulating you.””
Claire shook her head.
“He helped destroy Emily’s life.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
The same fear Claire had shown.
I looked at him.
“Is it true?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Then Maya screamed from upstairs.
A sound that sent ice through my veins.
I ran.
“Maya?””
Her bedroom door was open.
She stood beside her bed holding a tablet.
Her face was white.
“Dad…”
“What happened?””
She pointed at the screen.
“I found this.””
I looked.
A video file.
The title was simple.
But it made my blood run cold.
*The Night Emily Disappeared.*
I looked back at Claire.
At Daniel.
At the two people who had spent years hiding the truth.
And I realized something.
May you like
One of them had been lying.
But maybe neither of them had been telling the whole truth.
