Chapter 5: The Girl In The Old Photograph
“Who is Emily?””
Claire didn’t answer.
She just stared at the phone.
I watched every emotion cross her face.
Fear.
Regret.
Recognition.
But not surprise.
She knew.
That was the part that hurt the most.
She knew.
“Claire.””
She closed her eyes.
“Not here.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Not here?””
“Maya is nearby.””
“Our daughter almost ended up in the hospital because she was carrying secrets you forced her to keep.””
Her face tightened.
“I never forced her.””
“You made her afraid.””
“I was scared.””
“So you made her scared too?””
She looked down.
For a moment, I saw guilt.
Real guilt.
But it wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
“Tell me about Emily.””
Claire sat silently for several seconds.
Then she whispered:
“She was my friend.””
“Your friend?””
“Yes.””
“What happened to her?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“She vanished.””
“When?””
“The same year Daniel disappeared.””
My mind struggled to process it.
“So your fiancé disappeared, your friend disappeared, and you just moved on?””
“No.””
“Then what did you do?””
Her eyes filled.
“I ran.””
The word hung between us.
“You ran from what?””
Claire looked at me.
“From the truth.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But beneath that anger was something else.
Confusion.
Because I realized I had spent fifteen years with someone who had an entire life before me that she had never mentioned.
A life full of missing people.
Secrets.
And now my daughter was trapped in the middle of it.
“Why did Daniel come back?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
“You knew he was alive?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“For how long?””
“Months.””
My chest tightened.
“Months?””
She stood.
“Mark, listen to me.””
“No.””
“I didn’t tell you because I was trying to protect our family.””
“From what?””
“From him.””
I pointed at the phone.
“Then why is he contacting Maya?””
Claire froze.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
She lowered her voice.
“Daniel is dangerous.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did you hide him from me?””
Because she didn’t have an answer.
That was the answer.
Later that day, I took Maya home from the hospital.
The doctors wanted her resting.
They wanted her away from stress.
But stress was waiting for us at our front door.
The house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same couch.
The same pictures.
The same family calendar hanging on the refrigerator.
A normal home.
Built on something abnormal.
Maya stood in the hallway holding her backpack.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you going to send me away?””
I turned around.
“What?””
“Mom said sometimes when families break, kids have to leave.””
I walked to her.
“Maya.””
I knelt down.
“You are not the reason anything is breaking.””
“But if I didn’t find the papers—”
“No.””
I held her shoulders gently.
“Listen to me. Adults make choices. Adults are responsible for their own choices.””
She nodded.
That night, after Maya went to sleep, I searched the house.
Not because I wanted to invade Claire’s privacy.
Because I no longer knew what privacy meant in a marriage built on secrets.
I found the first clue in our bedroom closet.
Behind old blankets.
A box.
Inside were documents.
Old photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope with a name written across the front.
Emily Carter.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
The headline:
*LOCAL WOMAN STILL MISSING AFTER FIVE YEARS*
Below it was a photograph.
Emily.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside Claire.
I looked at the date.
Five years ago.
No.
Not five.
The article was older.
Much older.
The missing date was fourteen years ago.
The same year Claire met Daniel.
The same year before she met me.
I kept searching.
At the bottom of the box was a notebook.
Claire’s handwriting.
I opened the first page.
I don’t know if anyone will ever find this.
My heart pounded.
I read.
If Daniel comes back, I need to tell the truth.
I turned the page.
Emily never knew what we found.
Another page.
She wanted to go to the police.
Another.
Daniel said we had to stop her.
I stopped breathing.
The notebook fell from my hands.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Her face was empty.
She knew.
She knew what I had found.
“Mark…”
I held up the notebook.
“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.””
She started crying.
And that scared me more than anger would have.
Because Claire had always been good at hiding emotions.
But now she couldn’t.
“I didn’t hurt her.””
The words came out instantly.
I stared at her.
“I didn’t ask if you hurt her.””
She went silent.
The room felt frozen.
Then I asked:
“What did you do to Emily?””
Claire covered her mouth.
And before she answered, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Claire looked toward the sound.
And whispered:
“He found us.””
I walked toward the door.
“Who?””
She grabbed my arm.
“Don’t open it.””
Too late.
The doorbell rang.
Then a man’s voice came through the wood.
“Mark?””
I froze.
Because I had never met Daniel.
But somehow, he knew my name.
“Open the door.””
Claire stepped backward.
Terrified.
May you like
And then Daniel said the one thing that made me reach for the lock.
“Your wife is not the only person who has been lying to you.””
