Chapter 4: The Woman I Never Knew
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
Claire.
Standing beside a man I had never seen.
A man named Daniel.
The picture was old. The colors were faded, the edges slightly worn. It looked like something that had been sitting in a drawer for years, waiting for the right moment to destroy someone’s life.
But what terrified me wasn’t just the picture.
It was the date.
Fourteen years ago.
Three years before I met Claire.
Five years before Maya was born.
I looked at the screen again.
Then at the hospital room where my daughter slept.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.
I called the unknown number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then a man answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
“You already know.””
“No. I don’t.””
“Yes, you do.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Daniel?””
Silence.
Then:
“You found the phone.””
My heart dropped.
“How do you know about the phone?””
“Because Claire told me she was worried.””
I looked around the empty waiting room.
“Why were you texting my daughter’s phone?””
“I wasn’t.””
“You sent a message asking if she told me yet.””
Another pause.
“She wasn’t supposed to have that phone.””
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?””
“Mark, you need to understand something.””
I hated hearing my name from him.
Like he knew me.
Like he had been watching my life from the outside.
“Your wife has been lying to you for a long time.””
I stood.
“You don’t get to say that. Not without explaining.””
“I’m trying to.””
“Then start talking.””
The man exhaled.
“My relationship with Claire started before yours.””
I said nothing.
Because somehow, hearing it out loud hurt less than the silence I had been living in.
“You were never supposed to find out about me.””
My voice lowered.
“Were you two together?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
And somehow that made it worse.
“Then what?””
Daniel didn’t answer right away.
Finally, he said:
“Claire and I were partners.””
“Partners?””
“In a business.””
I frowned.
“What business?””
Another silence.
Then:
“The kind of business she doesn’t want you knowing about.””
My mind raced.
Claire worked in marketing. At least, that was what she told me.
She had left her old company before we got married.
She said she wanted a quieter life.
A family.
A fresh start.
But now I wondered.
Fresh start from what?
“Why is my daughter involved?””
Daniel’s voice changed.
Softer.
“She found something.””
“What?””
“She found the truth.””
I looked toward Maya’s room.
“What truth?””
“Ask your wife what happened the year before you met her.””
The call ended.
I stood there staring at my phone.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just another question.
Another piece of a puzzle I never wanted to solve.
When I returned to Maya’s room, she was awake.
“Dad?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Did you talk to him?””
I froze.
“You know who Daniel is?””
She looked guilty.
“I heard Mom say his name.””
“When?””
Maya looked down.
“A few weeks ago.””
I sat beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She twisted the blanket between her fingers.
“Because Mom said if I told anyone, she would lose everything.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“She said people would hate her.””
I swallowed.
“Maya, did your mother hurt you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Not like that.””
The way she answered broke my heart.
Because it meant she had already considered the question.
“She just made me feel like everything was my fault.””
I held her hand.
“Tell me everything.””
Maya nodded slowly.
“She started acting different after she got a letter.””
“What kind of letter?””
“I don’t know.””
“When?””
“About two months ago.””
I thought back.
Two months ago.
That was when Claire started staying up late.
When she started turning her phone away from me.
When she suddenly became protective of every little thing.
I had noticed.
But I had ignored it.
Because marriage teaches you something dangerous.
You learn how to explain away the things you don’t want to see.
“What happened after the letter?””
Maya looked toward the door.
“She got scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“She said someone was coming back.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Maya whispered:
“Daniel.””
I spent the next hour sitting beside my daughter, listening.
Not every detail made sense.
Some pieces were missing.
Some memories were unclear.
But one thing was obvious.
Maya had been watching the adults around her.
And she had been afraid.
The next morning, Claire arrived.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
Hair messy.
For a second, she looked like the woman I married.
The woman I loved.
Then she saw me holding the memory card.
And that version disappeared.
“You watched them.””
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.””
Her face went pale.
“Mark.””
“Who is Daniel?””
She closed the door behind her.
“Keep your voice down.””
“Why?””
“Because Maya is already scared.””
I stared at her.
“You’re worried about Maya being scared?””
Her expression hardened.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I stepped closer.
“You made our daughter believe I wouldn’t believe her.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
She looked away.
“From the truth.””
Those words stopped me.
“Then tell me the truth.””
She sat down.
For the first time since I knew her, Claire looked completely defeated.
“Daniel was my fiancé.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had been removed.
“What?””
“Before you.””
I stared at her.
“You told me you were never married.””
“I wasn’t.””
“But engaged?””
She nodded.
“What happened?””
Her eyes filled.
“He disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Three years before I met you.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“And somehow he’s texting our daughter now?””
Claire looked at me.
“He came back.””
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her voice broke.
“Because of what happened.””
“What happened?””
She looked toward Maya’s room.
Then back at me.
“I made a mistake.””
“What kind of mistake?””
Her lips trembled.
And then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person who disappeared that year.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
One line.
Ask Claire what happened to the woman named Emily.
I looked up.
Claire had seen the message.
May you like
And the color drained from her face.
Because she knew that name.
